This paper describes a comparison study of different ways to formulate a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) problem. Two MDO architectures, multidisciplinary feasible (MDF) and individual disciplinary feasible (IDF), were tested using a simulation-based aircraft model. For this case study, the aerodynamics discipline is modeled with computational fluid dynamics and the structures discipline is modeled with finite element analysis. The results show that the MDF architecture finds better solutions when it comes to optimality, but it requires more computing resources than does the IDF architecture.

A multi-objective optimization method for thin-walled tube NC bending is presented. Firstly, a half-symmetry 3D elastic-plastic FEM model is established based on the initial design values, applying the dynamic explicit code ABAQUS/Explicit. Secondly, virtual orthogonal arrays are designed to optimize friction coefficients, with minimizing the maximum wall-thinning ratio, the maximum cross section distortion ratio and the maximum height of wrinkling waves as the multi-objectives. Lastly, the mandrel radius is optimized by sequential quadratic programming with approximate regressive models fit from uniform design values in the allowed range. Application is put forward for Phi 50x1x100 (tube outside diameter xtube wall thickness x central line bending radius) and Phi 100x1.5x200 aluminum alloy tube bending. It is proved that the forming quality has been improved by the method.

A nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) based missile guidance algorithm for target interception is proposed. The planar engagement between a missile and a target is considered where both are assumed to be point masses. The lateral acceleration (or latax) commands for the missile are synthesized based on the numerical solutions to a quadratic program for the NPMC which does not require explicit information on the target acceleration. A cost function suitable for the problem is chosen and constraints are imposed on the latax, on the rate of change of latax, and on the relative velocity component along the line-of-sight (LOS). The quadratic program is shown to be a convex one. Suitable modifications are introduced in the quadratic program such that the guidance algorithm can accommodate constraint infeasibilities if required. Detailed simulations are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Also, performance of the proposed guidance algorithm is compared with the performances of the pure proportional navigation (PPN) and a modified augmented proportional navigation (APN) (namely, augmented pure proportional navigation (APPN)) guidance laws. It is shown that the proposed guidance algorithm leads to performances comparable to the APPN guidance law, without requiring explicit knowledge of the target acceleration.

In the paper, a multi-stage approach for numerical trajectory optimization of multiple aircraft in the vicinity of an airport is presented. The method for solving the problem consists of 5 stages where the first four solve the problem of ordering, fixing the final times and hierarchical distance separation, and the solution of the hierarchical formulation is then used as the initial guess for the combined problem with pairwise distance constraints. The approach proved to be very efficient in terms of computation speed resulting in computation time of less than 3 minutes for all stages of solving the trajectory optimization problem for 5 aircraft. The numerical experiments were carried out with MUSCOD-II optimization software.

Hybrid actuators can provide better performances than hydraulic or electromechanical actuators alone;however, control of these hybrid systems is more challenging. This paper presents the application of model predictive control (MPC) on a hybrid actuator system to coordinate multiple control objectives. MPC has advantages over traditional controllers such as a PID in controlling non-linear multi-input, multi-output systems. MPC proactively updates the control inputs in a specific time interval by observing the current state of the system, predicting the future behavior, and solving an optimization problem repeatedly with consideration of pre-defined control objectives. In this paper, a high-fidelity dynamic model of the hybrid actuator system will be developed and a simplified, reduced-order model will be derived for use in the MPC formulation process. The detailed process of designing an MPC controller, which may consist of mathematical formulation of an optimization problem and numerical methods to find the optimal solution, will be discussed in detail. Simulation results will be presented to compare the performances of the MPC with PID controllers, and the effects of different controller parameters on the system performances will be discussed.

Uncertainties inherent in aircraft manufacturing and operations can have significant impact on performance. These include manufacturing deviations, in-service wear-and-tear, uncertainty in ambient flight conditions, variations in control-surface rigging and deflections under load, and the effects of ice and non-ice contamination. It is therefore imperative to develop design processes that strike the right balance between robustness and performance. However, the application of robust design techniques using high-fidelity aerodynamic analysis is still prohibitively expensive. The main reason for this is that robust design processes typically employ statistical distributions to model uncertainties, and relatively large sample sizes are required to obtain accurate estimates of the moments of the distributions. The consequence of this is that the resources required to complete a robust design optimization can be orders of magnitude greater than that required for deterministic optimizations, unless reduced-order or surrogate modeling is employed. In the work presented herein, a novel non-stochastic approach is proposed to enforce design robustness. This is accomplished by constraining the second derivative of the design objective with respect to the design variables, thereby removing the need for uncertainty propagation in the design process. Sample optimizations are included to demonstrate the viability of the new approach, in which robust airfoil designs are achieved in a small fraction of the time and resources required by traditional methods.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a promising technology to solve many new challenging problems. It provides high maneuverability and control, low manufacturing cost with respect to other flying technologies and many other features. In particular, there is an increasing interest in UAVs in the field of wireless communications, due to their capacity to carry on transceivers and establish communication among UAVs, or between UAVs and ground base stations/users. In this work. we investigate a UAV deployment in which each flying vehicle serves a set of users, carrying directional antennas. To do so, we maximize the minimum downlink rate among the users that a UAV serves. Due to the non-convexity of the problem, we will divide it into four sub-problems. Afterwards, an iterative algorithm is proposed to optimize the four sub-problems by using the block coordinate descent method, successive convex approximation and sequential quadratic programming. Simulation results show that the addition of directional antennas results in a better performance in terms of throughput compared with omni-directional benchmarks.

Double input Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are recently used in power system to damp out low frequency oscillations. This paper presents a new design for PSSs with dual inputs (PSS2B, PSS3B, PSS4B) using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The proposed method is simple, effective and can guarantee that the overall system performance is desirable. The simulation results using single machine and multi machine power systems show that the transient performance of dual-input PSS is better than single-input PSS. It is, further, explored that among dual-input PSSs, PSS4B offers superior transient performance. Comparative results of the proposed SQP method and other intelligent methods, PSO, GA and BFA, reveal that the new proposed control strategy has a better robustness and performance over other existing techniques.

A novel physics-infused reduced-order modeling (PIROM) methodology has recently been developed for the synthesis of highly efficient, accurate, and generalizable non-linear reducedorder models. The PIROMconsists of an augmented system of physics-based analytical equations that represents the domain physical knowledge, with a data-driven functional component that represents the unknown physical knowledge;the data-driven component may be in differential or algebraic form. For time-continuous systems, the unknown parameters for a data-driven component in differential form are often determined using standard adjoint-based optimization techniques that, however, may become numerically ill-conditioned as the training progresses. This motivates the development of the weak-form PIROM (PIROM-w), which circumvents the possibly ill-conditioned adjoint-based model training through a new weak-form optimization approach. The PIROM-w transforms the dynamical constraints associated with the augmented system into a set of integral constraints that are solved using standard methods of weighted residuals (MWR). The transformation of the constraints into integral form smooths the Lagrangian-based optimization search space by making the adjoint variables time-independent and transforming the differential adjoint problem into an algebraic one. In this work, PIROM-w is coupled with the ADAM algorithm for learning unknown dynamics in a forced pendulum system and a hypersonic panel flutter problem.

In order to further improve the control ability of dynamic positioning ship or platform under complex sea conditions, the controller and thrust allocation system of dynamic positioning are designed. A simplified three-degree-of-freedom MMG mathematical model is established for the pod full-rotation propeller used in most dynamic positioning ships. On the basis of retaining the advantages of active disturbance rejection control, the sliding mode variable structure control method is adopted to design the control law. The objective function and constraints of thrust allocation are designed based on the lowest energy consumption, and the sequential quadratic programming algorithm is used to calculate the real-time thrust allocation of each propeller. The simulation results of the ship dynamic positioning system in MATLAB show that the controller can maintain the stability and robustness of the system under the condition of external environment disturbance, and the results of the thrust allocation are reasonable, which has a certain reference value for the further study of the ship dynamic positioning control system.
