A new search algorithm for phased array radar which is based on radio frequency stealth is proposed in this paper. When there is no indication information, parameters including the dwelling time and the average power are optimized by sequential quadratic programming (SQP), and a minimum energy cost model is set up by using Grey Relational Grade (GRG). The surveillance area is divided into several subareas according to the elevation angle. The radar can radiate adaptively according to the different priorities. Compared with other search algorithms, the simulation results show that our algorithm can consume less energy and provide better performance in term of radio frequency stealth and detection.

This paper presents the application of optimization methods for the synthesis of a linear array for communication systems. By means of suitably beam switching, the array should provide coverage of a given angular area in azimuth and should allow controlling the sidelobe level simultaneously. For this purpose, two optimization methods have been used to calculate the excitation coefficient for each desired beam. The synthesis technique is demonstrated for arrays composed of isotropic and microstrip elements. By comparing the results obtained for both arrays, the need of consideration of the array element pattern during the synthesis process is demonstrated.

We introduce CAT, a constraint-aware teleoperation method that can track continuously updating 6DOF end-effector goals while avoiding environment collisions, self-collisions, and joint limits. Our method uses sequential quadratic programming to generate motion trajectories that obey kinematic constraints while attempting to reduce the distance to the goal with each step. Environment models are created and updated at run-time using a commodity depth camera. We compare our method to three additional teleoperation strategies, based on global motion planning, inverse kinematics, and Jacobian-transpose control. Our analysis, using a real robot in a variety of scenes, highlights the strengths of each method, and shows that the CAT method we introduce performs well over a wide range of scenarios.

This paper presents the application of optimization methods for the synthesis of antenna arrays. The desired pattern shall exhibit a shape that allows uniform distribution of the radiated power on the Earth. Besides beamshaping, the optimization methods allow controlling the level of the sidelobes. The synthesis technique is used to calculate the excitation coefficients for arrays composed of cavity-backed circularly polarized annular slot antennas.

This paper presents a reduced order model based optimal oscillation damping controller (OODC) design for DFIG integrated power system. The objective of the proposed OODC is to shift critical inter-area modes of the system to optimal location considering the impact of control on dynamics of synchronous generators and DFIG. A reduced order model that captures all the relevant system dynamics is first obtained, and an objective cost function is formulated to include the damping of critical modes. Then an optimization architecture is designed for finding the optimal gain. The results of eigenvalue analysis and non-linear time domain simulation performed on the modified Kundur two area system are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed OODC to effectively damp the oscillations of the system.

CFD-based aircraft design optimization has matured significantly in the last few years thanks to improvements in CFD solvers, mesh deformation, sensitivity computation, and optimization tools. We review our recent developments for each of these components, and present open-source tools made available for aerodynamic shape optimization. Avariety of applications is presented, including the optimization of a supercritical airfoil starting from a circle, a web application that optimizes airfoils within a few seconds, aircraft aerodynamic and aerostructural optimization, and aeropropulsive optimization. We also review our experience with solving the Aerodynamic Design Optimization Discussion Group (ADODG) benchmarks and other problems in aerodynamic shape optimization. Among the ADODG benchmarks, we focus on the RANS-based problems and discuss some of the issues encountered, including the comparison between Euler and RANS results, and design space multimodality. The availability of these benchmarks and the open-source tools is expected to enable further studies and benchmarks in CFD-based aerodynamic design optimization and MDO.

We introduce in this work a PDE-constrained approach to optical tomography that makes use of an all-at-once reduced Hessian sequential quadratic programming (rSQP) scheme. The proposed scheme treats the forward and inverse variables independently, which makes it possible to update the radiation intensities and the optical coefficients simultaneously by solving the forward and inverse problems, all at once. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme with numerical and experimental data, and find that the rSQP scheme can reduce the computation time by a factor of 10 to 25, as compared to the commonly employed limited memory BFGS method.

This paper demonstrates the potential to use shape optimization for the design of vortex generators in an axisymmetric boundary layer. This shape optimization increases the amplitude of stationary streaks created by streamwise vorticity, with the goal of reducing the amplification of Mack mode instabilities. The test case under consideration matches a trajectory point during the ascent phase of the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment. Wall-mounted vortex generators are added to the cone and their shape is optimized to control the amplification of Mack mode instabilities that are known to initiate laminar-turbulent transition in this flow. An empirical objective function is developed based on the previous studies of optimal streaks. A constraint on the maximum streak amplitude is added to avoid the initiation of bypass transition. The shape optimization is conducted using SU2, an open-source suite for multiphysics simulation and design. A significant improvement is observed in an integral metric of the streak amplitude, while the maximum streak amplitude is maintained close to the baseline level. The qualitative features of the optimized geometry are discussed.

Overloading in existing transmission lines can be eliminated by enhancing the transmittable power through existing transmission line using series capacitive compensation, which was introduced long ago. Later, a converter based series compensation called Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) is introduced and its inherent capability of exchanging real power is efficiently utilized in the proposed work. If an attempt is made to increase transmittable power through a transmission line using SSSC, power loss and X/R ratio of the transmission line gets deteriorated. The trade-off between transmittable power, transmission loss and X/R ratio is tackled by an optimal control of the compensator. In this paper, an optimal control of SSSC is proposed with the objective of minimizing transmission loss while maintaining the X/R ratio and voltage within the limits. A MATLAB simulation platform is used for validating the proposed optimal control of SSSC for enhancing transmittable power of a 400kV, 400km transmission line. It is seen that, for a 30% enhanced transmittable power, power loss could be reduced by 27.89% with proposed optimization technique as compared to power loss without optimization.

Changing the electrical load is a non-stationary random process. It is proposed to process the observation data using principal component analysis. To predict the power consumption the method of support vector machine was selected in which the parameters of the regression model are determined on the basis of the solution of a sequential quadratic programming problem. Optimization of parameters of nuclear function is executed on the basis of particle swarm. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
