Roof top PV installations are normally not controlled by the network operator but driven by consumer actions. Some power quality issues have been caused or aggravated, such as voltage rise and unbalance which restricts further PV connections. However, the latent reactive power capability of PV inverters may be utilized to provide voltage/VAR support and increase the renewable power fraction. This paper proposes a novel three-step PV control strategy based on the reactive power control of inverters and real power curtailment. The optimization model is solved by a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) based global approach and the validity is tested on a real 3-phase 4-wire unbalanced distribution network model developed during the Perth Solar City trial in Western Australia.

In this paper, an experiment based thrust control command expression for propeller-driven-piston-engine powered aircraft is obtained to complete the required dynamics for finding the trim flight solutions in steady-straight-level (SSL) condition using a nonlinear optimization technique. sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is adapted to compute the angle-of-attack, sideslip angle and bank angle for a specified flight velocity, turn-radius, and flight path angle of an aircraft which is further utilized to evaluate the trim states and control inputs in SSL flight. Both aerodynamic and thrust control inputs are calculated by the steady-state solution of equations of motion of aircraft. As per the novelty of the present study concern, the flight test is performed on Hansa-3 aircraft at the airfield of IIT Kanpur to model the thrust input as well as to verify the numerical results. Additionally, through the numerical analysis, it is observed that the SQP method economizes the computation time as compared to a gradient descent approach method.

According to the nonlinear, multivariable and multi-constraint features of the reentry trajectory optimization problem of airbreathing hypersonic vehicles, a suboptimal solution method is developed. The reentry trajectory generation is converted to a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem by using Gauss pseudospectral method (GPM). The state and control variables on Gauss nodes are chosen as parameters to be optimized and the minimum total heat absorption is chosen as the optimal performance index. Then the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method is used to solve the NLP problem. The states of optimized trajectory are compared with the states obtained by the integral of kinetic equations. By simulating on an example of airbreathing hypersonic vehicles, it is demonstrated that the above method is not sensitive to the estimate of motion states and is easier to converge. And the method is effective to solve trajectory optimization problems.

Hyperspectral unmixing is a process of extracting hidden spectral signatures (or endmembers) and the corresponding proportions (or abundances) of a scene, from its hyperspectral observations. Motivated by Craig's belief, we recently proposed an alternating linear programming based hyperspectral unmixing algorithm called minimum volume enclosing simplex (MVES) algorithm, which can yield good unmixing performance even for instances of highly mixed data. In this paper, we propose a robust MVES algorithm called RMVES algorithm, which involves probabilistic reformulation of the MVES algorithm, so as to account for the presence of noise in the observations. The problem formulation for RMVES algorithm is manifested as a chance constrained program, which can be suitably implemented using sequential quadratic programming (SQP) solvers in an alternating fashion. Monte Carlo simulations are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed RMVES algorithm over several existing benchmark hyperspectral unmixing methods, including the original MVES algorithm.

In power converters, common challenge for current reference tracking employing model predictive control (MPC) is the high computational burden. This issue is more obvious when solving optimal control problems over prediction horizons. To manage and enhance the computational efficiency of widely used control strategies, an integrated perturbation analysis and sequential quadratic programming (IPA-SQP) solver is used to achieve the system constrained optimization and lower sampling times, hence reducing the computational complexity. A Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for current control in cascaded H-bridge Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C) is also developed. The M3C is connected to a low frequency AC system, which has an operating frequency less than 20 Hz. The proposed control scheme is therefore introducing an alternative for practical implementation. Simulation results for a closed-loop system with low frequency output side for a 9-level M3C is included to validate the main findings.

Natural Gas (NG), which represents 95% of the fuel mix in stationary power generation in Singapore, has been seen as the replacement of traditional pollutant-heavy fuels such as diesel. In the microgrid context, NG is a crucial raw material for powering principal components such as the Reciprocating Engine (RE), which provides the base load when the microgrid is in islanded mode. In this study, the effect of NC prices on the financial viability of operating a microgrid which integrates Combined Heat and Power, solar PV, electrochemical storage, vapour chiller and the main grid has been investigated. The economic dispatch of the components indicate that at an increase of NG price by 20 cents reduces the operating hours per day of the RE by nearly half, with the option of purchasing from the grid preferred instead. Furthermore, at a higher fuel price the battery is required to operate at a heavier duty cycle, thus reducing its lifetime. A positive Net Present Value (NPV) in the order of millions of SGD is obtained in the NG price range of SGD0.4-0.6 per kg after 20 years, whilst at a price of SGD0.8 per kg, the microgrid fails to provide a positive NPV. The option of regasitication of LNG prior to feeding it into the RE has been found to provide a maximum amount of cold energy in the region of 500kWh per day.

The sequential quadratic programming and genetic algorithms are finely tuned on the optimal design of a brushless DC wheel motor. Combining both methods, a hybrid approach is tested. Multiobjective optimizations are performed using Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm, and a variable weighted sum of objectives with the sequential quadratic programming. The Pareto fronts are compared in term of accuracy, uniformity, and coverage criteria using some quality indicators.

A multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) two-hop interference network with multiple links and multiple relays is considered. We optimize transmit precoders, receive decoders and relay AF matrices to maximize the achievable sum rate. Two constraint sets are discussed: first, individual per user and total relay sum power constraints. We propose an algorithm to maximize the total signal to total interference plus noise ratio (TSTINR). Second, this algorithm is extended to individual user and individual relay fixed transmit power constraints. Additionally, we derive algorithms for the total leakage interference plus noise (TLIN) minimization and the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) approach to sum rate maximization. Interestingly, our simulations show that, for both constraint sets, our TSTINR algorithm outperforms the TLIN algorithm generally and outperforms WMMSE in medium to high Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) scenarios, while TSTINR and TLIN requires less computing time than WMMSE generally.

In order to implement the bi-level optimization strategy-collaborative optimization (CO) to bridge design, bridge optimization design process is subdivided into three subsystems in terms of component-oriented decomposition: superstructure subsystem, bearing subsystem and substructure subsystem. For system level, target function is formulated with the total direct construction cost, and inequality constraints induced relaxation factors are adopted to relax the intersubsystem consistency constraints. For subsystems, target functions are formulated with discrepancy expressions and constraints are formulated according to corresponding codes demands respectively. The feasibility and validity of the proposed approach are examined with an optimization process of reinforcement concrete box girder bridge. Optimization results from proposed approach are compared with that from mono-discipline optimization. The proposed approach shows high computing efficiency than mono-discipline optimization methods when achieving same optimization results.

In this paper, a non-linear multiobjective optimization model is developed to obtain optimal annual scheduling for control of power generation in serial or parallel hydropower plants. Weighted-sum method is used to convert multiobjective optimization to single objective problem. Then, sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is used, based on using Newton's method and Kune-Tucker conditions, to solve optimization problem. Maximization of power generation benefits and minimization of specific water consumption are assumed as objective functions. In this study, stochastic flows from external sources that enter to each reservoir (like rivers and rain) are assumed based on some scenarios for dry, median, and wet years. These various dry, median and wet water inflow scenarios are generated from the gathered fifty-year historical inflow measurements. Besides, turbine power generation is obtained from hill diagrams. The case study refers to hydropower plants network in Karoon River Basin in southern Iran. The corresponding optimization model has 240 variables and 660 constraints and MATLAB software is used to develop the model. Solving such non-linear multiobjective optimization model, annual rule curves that show optimal operation for reservoirs and total yearly energy production are presented for control of the cascaded units.
