This paper investigates a Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for the precise control of (un) balanced load currents in Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). The control objectives are circulating currents minimization inside the converter arms, achieve a capacitors voltage balance and load current control. To achieve the converter constrained optimization and facilitate the implementation on embedded systems, an integrated perturbation analysis and sequential quadratic programming (IPA-SQP) solver is also utilized. As a case study the proposed approach is applied to a grid-connected five-level MMC. The introduced FCS-MPC formulation reduces sensitivity of the converter output voltage to disturbances in grid side and measurement noise with reducing the computational burden. Simulation results reveal the effectiveness of the developed control scheme in cases when operational objectives, e.g., load current reference tracking and disturbance rejection are considered under system model uncertainties.

In the optimum coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays (DOCRs), operational time of relays is minimized with maintaining coordination criteria between Primary and Backup (P/B) relay pairs. In the literature, a range of Objective Functions (OFs) including constraints with various weightings are developed to obtain the optimum coordination of relays. In this paper, the performance of different OFs is evaluated on IEEE 30-bus system using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The comparative analysis is executed to find the best OF for the coordination problem of DOCRs.

Structure from Motion (SfM) and semantic segmentation are two branches of computer vision. However, few previous methods integrate the two branches together. SfM is limited by the precision of traditional feature detecting method, especially in complicated scenes. As the research field of semantic segmentation thrives, we could gain semantic information of high confidence in each specific task with little effort. By utilizing semantic segmentation information, our paper presents a new way to boost the accuracy of feature point matching. Besides, with the semantic constraints taken from the result of semantic segmentation, a new bundle adjustment method with equality constraint is proposed. By exploring the sparsity of equality constraint, it indicates that constrained bundle adjustment can be solved by sequential quadratic programming (SQP) efficiently. The proposed approach achieves state of the art accuracy, and, by grouping the descriptors together by their semantic labels, the speed of putative matches is slightly boosted. Moreover, our approach demonstrates a potential of automatic labeling of semantic segmentation. In a nutshell, our work strongly verifies that SfM and semantic segmentation benefit from each other.

There are mainly two types of synergetic maneuvers for aeroassisted orbital transfer, which are called aeroglide and aerocruise. Aerocruise mode is considered as means for maximizing the plane change of a circular orbit by considering heating rate when the vehicle maneuvers from high Earth orbit to low Earth orbit. For aerocruise, the maneuver is divided into three phases: descent. cruise, and ascent. In cruise mode the vehicle flies at a constant altitude when thrust is used to cancel the drag and the heating rate is effectively restrained. The heating-rate-constrained aerocruise scheme which consists of cruise altitude, cruise velocity and angle of attack are optimized by using sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The effectivity of the algorithm and existence of the optimal solution are both validated by simulation experiments. Numerical results show that the orbital change ability is closely related to the maximum allowable heating rate. The maximum plane change is obtained when the vehicle remains on the heating-rate boundary. The optimality of the aerocruise maneuver is guaranteed by considering the optimized aerocruise scheme as performance index of descent trajectory optimization.

In this study, a wing planform optimization is performed by using 3D flow solutions together with the response surface methodology. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate an optimization approach involving aerodynamic shapes of aircraft. For this purpose, the wing planform of a turboprop trainer aircraft is optimized to achieve the lowest possible drag coefficient while ensuring the desired maneuvering capability and lateral stability. The optimization objective and constraints are determined considering mission requirements and dimensions of turboprop trainer aircraft already operating. Flow solutions are obtained by using a 3D open-source RANS solver, SU2, to calculate aerodynamic coefficients required in the objective function and constraints. Instead of using flow solutions to calculate aerodynamic coefficients at each optimization iteration, surrogate models that relate design parameters to be optimized to the objective function and constraints are used. Surrogate models are constructed as high-order nonlinear analytical functions with the help of response surface methodology. sequential experimentation, a design of experiment technique, is used to determine design points where flow solutions are obtained to construct surrogate models. Surrogate models are validated by comparing the results of models with flow solutions and validated surrogate models are used in the optimization. Since the objective function and constraints are nonlinear functions, nonlinear optimization algorithms are used. The optimization is performed by using different optimization algorithms, the sequential quadratic programming, and the interior point, and different initial conditions to observe the effect of the optimization algorithm and the initial condition on the optimum configuration. Typical algorithms used in optimisation problems can be classified into gradient-based or agent-based optimisers. Gradient-based optimisers boast very fast convergence due to their ability to extract topological information from the local gradient of the objective function, but can often get trapped in a local minimum. Agent-based optimisers use a series of agents to traverse the search space stochastically and are thus much more prone to find the global minimum, but their cost may be unacceptable in typical engineering optimisation problems. The question remains on whether convergence of agent-based algorithms can be accelerated using design space information. Anovel optimisation algorithm is introduced that uses machine learning in the form of a Self-Organising Map (SOM) to extract topological information from the optimisation design space and guide the agents of a Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA). The proposed optimiser is benchmarked against a set of unconstrained analytical optimisation functions, and it is shown to outperform classical agent-based optimisers. The algorithm is further applied to an engineering design problem in the form of constrained transonic aerodynamic shape optimisation, confirming its robustness and higher performance.

A multi-energy system that controls the generation and storage of different types of energy offers great potential for improving the overall system efficiency and operating cost. The economic dispatch problem for multi-energy systems is to find the optimal system configuration that satisfies the demands under a host of constraints. The problem is often formulated as a mixed integer programming problem, which is very hard to solve since the number of variables involved could be in the order of hundreds. The difficulty of the problem is further compounded when model predictive control is implemented because the set points for controlling the multi-energy system at each time step have to be modeled, drastically increasing the number of variables in the optimization problem. In this paper, a large-scale hybrid optimization strategy is proposed to solve the economic dispatch in a multi-energy management system. Mixed-integer linear programming is used to solve a linearly approximated problem to determine the discrete set points followed by nonlinear programming for the continuous variables. We compare different optimization methods for the nonlinear programming problem with respect to the computational time and cost savings. The cost savings is also compared to a rule-based economic dispatch as the baseline. The simulation is performed using the data obtained from an office building in an R modeling and data management environment. We show that the proposed optimization strategy is able to solve the economic dispatch problem of a multi-energy management system with 720 mixed-integer variables within a short timeframe while still accounting for the nonlinearity of the optimization problem.

In this work, shape optimization is carried out of a single link flexible revolute flexible manipulator to extremize two objective functions (static tip deflection and fundamental frequency) using sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. The preliminary design process of manned or unmanned aircraft includes aircraft performance in trim flight. In this paper, a trim algorithm for computing flight-states and control inputs in trim flight is implemented using a nonlinear optimization method for the propeller-driven-electric-powered unmanned air vehicle (UAV) which is designed and manufactured at Flight Laboratory IIT Kanpur. The sequential quadratic programming method (SQP) is adopted to perform the numerical analysis in three flight regimes, namely: steady-straight-level flight (SSLF), level turn flight (LTF) and climb turn flight (CTF). Analytical validation of numerical results for bank angle in LTF adds the novelty to this work. Additionally, numerical analysis reveals the SQP method takes less computation time than compared to a gradient descent method.

We propose a real-time human activity analysis system, where a user's activity can be quantitatively evaluated with respect to a ground truth recording. We use two Kinects to solve the problem of self-occlusion through extracting optimal joint positions using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP). Incremental Dynamic Time Warping (IDTW) is used to compare the user and expert (ground truth) to quantitatively score the user's performance. Furthermore, the user's performance is displayed through a visual feedback system, where colors on the skeleton represent the user's score. Our experiments use a motion capture suit as ground truth to compare our dual Kinect setup to a single Kinect. We also show that with our visual feedback method, users gain a statistically significant boost to learning as opposed to watching a simple video.
