Despite software industries' successful utilization of service-oriented computing (SOC) to streamline software development, machine learning (ML) development has yet to fully integrate these practices. This disparity can be attributed to multiple factors, such as the unique challenges inherent to ML development and the absence of a unified framework for incorporating services into this process. In this paper, we shed light on the disparities between services-oriented computing and machine learning development. We propose "Everything as a Module" (XaaM), a framework designed to encapsulate every ML artifacts including models, code, data, and configurations as individual modules, to bridge this gap. We propose a set of additional steps that need to be taken to empower machine learning development using services-oriented computing via an architecture that facilitates efficient management and orchestration of complex ML systems. By leveraging the best practices of services-oriented computing, we believe that machine learning development can achieve a higher level of maturity, improve the efficiency of the development process, and ultimately, facilitate the more effective creation of machine learning applications.

Fault diagnosis in service-oriented computing through partially observed stochastic Petri nets

service composition, interoperability, loose coupling and distributed nature make service-oriented computing (SOC) enhanced for small-scale to large and complex software systems, though it tends to increase the vulnerability of faults. The properties of SOC pose newer challenges in fault diagnosis. To deal with this problem, we need to enhance the understandability that assists in fault analysis of SOC. In this paper, we have proposed a model-based fault diagnosis approach for SOC adopting the concept of partially observed stochastic Petri nets. In this work, Web services are transformed into Petri nets and stochastic Petri nets using the existing constructs. Then, the calculated reachability graph of the modeled Petri nets is used to diagnose the fault in the observable sequence with the help of labeled Petri nets. Experiments are conducted for the illustration of the proposed fault diagnosis model. The analyzed performance of the proposed model guarantees the accessibility of our approach and suggests the inspection of the model into real-world environments.

The importance of an architectural semantic for service-oriented computing starts with the characteristics of software systems that has been recognized with sharing and the utilization of resources. However, an architectural characteristic for service-oriented based applications depends on interaction patterns that utilizes a data format in communication. These patterns also help in establishing communication between service components. The goal of service-oriented computing methodologies could be achieved by adopting a logical separation of services from the actual mechanism of resource assignment and allotment. This shows that how services are reliable as interaction patterns between service provider and requester. It generates the binding patterns between these two and establishes communication between them. This article discusses the mathematical-based semantic model that presents an architectural view for systems that follows a service-oriented computing methodology. It also briefs describes about different execution states and routes, which addresses the service specifications in service-oriented computing.

We present GHTraffic, a dataset of significant size comprising HTTP transactions extracted from GitHub data and augmented with synthetic transaction data. The dataset facilitates reproducible research on many aspects of service oriented computing. This paper discusses use cases for such a dataset and extracts a set of requirements from these use cases. We then discuss the design of GHTraffic, and the methods and tool used to construct it. We conclude our contribution with some selective metrics that characterise GHTraffic.

Ontology-based context modeling in service-oriented computing: A systematic mapping

Context: service-oriented computing and context-aware computing are two consolidated paradigms that are changing the way of providing and consuming software services. Whilst service-oriented computing is based on service-oriented architectures for providing flexible software services, context-aware computing articulates different phases of a context life cycle for changing the behavior of such services. The synergy between both paradigms provides the context to this study. Objective: This study analyzes the current state of the art of context models, specifically: (1) which are these proposals and how are they related;(2) what are their structural characteristics;(3) what context information is the most addressed;and (4) what are their most consolidated definitions. Given their dominance on the field, the study focuses on ontology-based approaches. Method: We conducted a systematic mapping by establishing a review protocol that integrates automatic and manual searches from different sources. We applied a rigorous method to elicit the keywords from the research questions and selection criteria to retrieve the papers to evaluate. Results: Overall, 138 primary studies were selected to answer our research questions. These proposals were studied in depth by analyzing: 1) distribution along time and their relationships;2) size correlated with the number of classes and levels of the context model, and coverage of the definitions provided as indicator of quality provided;3) most addressed context information;4) most consolidated definitions of context information. Conclusions: The contribution of this survey is to make available a unified and consolidated body of knowledge on context for service-oriented computing that could be instantiated and used as starting point in a variety of use cases. This sweeping view on the anatomy of context models may help avoiding the postulation of new proposals not aligned with the current research.

Server selection schemes for service-oriented computing in mobile pervasive environment

In this paper, we present a set of server selection schemes that includes all crucial components of resources available at each relevant node of the network to reach at the server selection decision and at the same time attempts to maximise the system-wide resource utilisation. First in the series, a server-centric scheme is proposed that formulates the problem as distributed constraint optimisation problem (DCOP) and solves it using Fast max-sum (FMS) algorithm. Though it does not scale well in large network scenario yet it provides an estimate of the optimal values of performance metrics achievable under a specific scenario. Next, a client-centric scheme is proposed that outperforms the existing ones but does not guaranty to attain optimal Nash Equilibrium (NE). This motivates us to design another client-centric scheme that can avoid the price of anarchy by attaining superior NE of mix strategies. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

service compositions allow an high dynamism and flexibility, indispensable properties in today software systems, where services could dynamically enter and leave a system during its execution. This paper provides an overview about the service-oriented computing research, introducing the issues and engineering challenges in this context. We refer to service Foundations, service Composition and service Management&Monitoring showing how each of these layers defines a set of constructs, roles and responsibilities. A general overview without claim of completeness is given on the these aspects while a particular attention is given to the research problems related to dynamic service compositions, such as choreographies, addressing the role fulfillment and the choreography realizability problems.

An evolutionary process that is currently taking place in the software industry is the shift from developing applications from scratch to discovering and assembling services published in the Internet. This has given birth to a new computing paradigm called service-oriented computing (SOC). We investigated whether simplifying and automating tasks inherent to SOC-based development, while exploiting systems engineering students' experience in earlier paradigms, namely object orientation, reduce the cognitive effort needed to learn SOC. The study involved 38 undergraduate students plus 7 postgraduate students from 4 universities, which attended a course about SOC development models and technologies. Then, they were asked to develop a real-life service-oriented application using two alternatives, namely existing SOC libraries and a software support of our own named EasySOC. EasySOC promotes using common object-oriented design patterns to structure service-oriented applications, facilitates service discovery, and hides many technological details from users. The students were surveyed about their perception on both alternatives using a Likert-based questionnaire. Results show that the students, who had no previous experience in service-oriented notions before the experiment, perceived that EasySOC allows focusing on essential aspects of the paradigm while concealing accidental aspects, and provides adequate support and guidance to bridge the gap. Nowadays, companies are increasingly offering their business services through computational services on the Internet in order to attract more customers and increase their revenues. However, these services have financial costs that need to be managed in order to maximize profit. Several models and techniques have been recently reported that aim at managing, controlling and reducing service costs. However, each of these contributions covers a specific cost aspect subject to certain constraints, while in practice more comprehensive solutions are necessary. This paper presents a survey of models and techniques to handle service costs throughout the phases of the service lifecycle. Based on this survey, we identified a number of opportunities for future research, which should eventually yield comprehensive cost solutions.

With rapid growth in the complexity of large scale engineering systems, the application of multidisciplinary analysis and design optimization (MDO) in the engineering design process has garnered much attention. MDO addresses the challenge of integrating several different disciplines into the design process. Primary challenges of MDO include computational expense and poor scalability. The introduction of a distributed, collaborative computational environment results in better utilization of available computational resources, reducing the time to solution, and enhancing scalability. SORCER, a Java-based network-centric computing platform, enables analyses and design studies in a distributed collaborative computing environment. Two different optimization algorithms widely used in multidisciplinary engineering design---VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP---are implemented on a SORCER grid. VTDIRECT95, a Fortran 95 implementation of D. R. Jones’ algorithm DIRECT, is a highly parallelizable derivative-free deterministic global optimization algorithm. QNSTOP is a parallel quasi-Newton algorithm for stochastic optimization problems. The purpose of integrating VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP into the SORCER framework is to provide load balancing among computational resources, resulting in a dynamically scalable process. Further, the federated computing paradigm implemented by SORCER manages distributed services in real time, thereby significantly speeding up the design process. Results are included for an aircraft design application.
