An optimal service selection approach for service-oriented business collaboration using crowd-based cooperative computing

Crowd-based cooperative computing (CBCC) emerges as a new computing paradigm, the core issue of which is the effective management and the coordinated use of crowd resources, including Internet users, application services, and smart devices. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) provides interoperability among crowd resources to support service-oriented business collaboration (SOBC). To address such a common issue of the coordinated use of crowd resources for SOBC, this paper studies a collaborative service computing model by considering the competition and cooperation among crowd resources. Then, a multi-objective optimization mathematical model is established for optimal service selection (OSS). Specifically, the methodology is resorted to an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm to find suitable collaborative services that optimally balance the quality of service (QoS) and synergy effect (SE). Furthermore, a flexible rescheduling strategy is presented for faulty services. The experimental results show that the proposed methodology is effective and feasible to obtain better-quality solutions for fulfilling the SOBC. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Req-WSComposer: a novel platform for requirements-driven composition of semantic web services

service-oriented computing (SOC) describes a specific paradigm of computing that utilizes Web services as reusable components in order to develop new software applications. SOC allows distributed applications to work together via the Internet without direct human intervention. In this work, we propose a new SOC-based approach to ensure application development. This approach ensures the discovery, selection, and composition of the most appropriate Web services. With this approach, various requirements (both functional and non-functional) are specified by the developer to satisfy QoS, QoE, and QoBiz parameters and Web services are selected and composed to meet these requirements. Our approach is implemented using the Req-WSComposer (Requirements-based Web services Composer) platform, whose functionalities are tested using an extended and enriched version of the OWLS-TC dataset, which includes around 10,830 semantic Web services descriptions. The results of our experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach enables users to extract the most appropriate composition solution that satisfies the developer's pre-determined requirements.

An innovative approach for QoS-aware web service composition using whale optimization algorithm

With the proliferation of services and the vast amount of data produced by the Internet, numerous services with comparable functionalities but varying Quality of service (QoS) attributes are potential candidates for meeting user needs. Consequently, the selection of the most suitable services has become increasingly challenging. To address this issue, a synthesis of multiple services is conducted through a composition process to create more sophisticated services. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in QoS uncertainty, given its potential impact on determining an optimal composite service, where each service is characterized by multiple QoS properties (e.g., response time and cost) that are frequently subject to change primarily due to environmental factors. Here, we introduce a novel approach that depends on the Multi-Agent Whale Optimization Algorithm (MA-WOA) for web service composition problem. Our proposed algorithm utilizes a multi-agent system for the representation and control of potential services, utilizing MA-WOA to identify the optimal composition that meets the user's requirements. It accounts for multiple quality factors and employs a weighted aggregation function to combine them into a cohesive fitness function. The efficiency of the suggested method is evaluated using a real and artificial web service composition dataset (comprising a total of 52,000 web services), with results indicating its superiority over other state-of-the-art methods in terms of composition quality and computational effectiveness. Therefore, the proposed strategy presents a feasible and effective solution to the web service composition challenge, representing a significant advancement in the field of service-oriented computing.

An execution environment as a service for adaptive long-running workflows

Purpose This paper aims to present Long4Cloud (long-running workflows execution environment for cloud), a distributed and adaptive LRW execution environment delivered "as a service" solution. Design/methodology/approach LRWs last for hours, days or even months and their duration open the possibility of changes in business rules, service interruptions or even alterations of formal regulations of the business before the workflow completion. These events can lead to problems such as loss of intermediary results or exhaustion of computational resources used to manage the workflow execution. Existing solutions face those problems by merely allowing the replacement (at runtime) of services associated with activities of the LRW. Findings LONG4Cloud extends the previous works in two main aspects, namely, the inclusion of dynamic reconfiguration capabilities and the adoption of an "as a service" delivery mode. The reconfiguration mechanism uses quiescence principles, data and state management and provides multiple adaptive strategies. Long4Cloud also adopts a scenario-based analysis to decide the adaptation to be performed. Events such as changes in business rules or service failures trigger reconfigurations supported by the environment. These features have been put together in a solution delivered "as a service" that takes advantage of cloud elasticity and allows to better allocate cloud resources to fit into the demands of LRWs. Originality/value The original contribution of Long4Cloud is to incorporate adaptive capabilities into the LRW execution environment as an effective way to handle the specificities of this kind of workflow. Experiments using current data of a Brazilian health insurance company were carried out to evaluate Long4Cloud and show performance gains in the execution of LRWs submitted to the proposed environment.

An Intelligent Bat Algorithm for Web service Selection with QoS Uncertainty

Currently, the selection of web services with an uncertain quality of service (QoS) is gaining much attention in the service-oriented computing paradigm (SOC). In fact, searching for a service composition that fulfills a complex user's request is known to be NP-complete. The search time is mainly dependent on the number of requested tasks, the size of the available services, and the size of the QoS realizations (i.e., sample size). To handle this problem, we propose a two-stage approach that reduces the search space using heuristics for ranking the task services and a bat algorithm metaheuristic for selecting the final near-optimal compositions. The fitness used by the metaheuristic aims to fulfil all the global constraints of the user. The experimental study showed that the ranking heuristics, termed "fuzzy Pareto dominance" and "Zero-order stochastic dominance", are highly effective compared to the other heuristics and most of the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Because of the competitive economy, organizations today seek to rationalize, innovate and adapt to changing environments and circumstances as part of business process improvements efforts. The strength of blockchain technology lies in its usage as an apt technology to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes;furthermore, it prevents the use of erroneous or obsolete data, and allow sharing of confidential data securely. The use of superior technology in the execution and automation of business processes brings opportunities to rethink the specific process itself as well. Today's enterprise environment is rapidly changing with organizations adopting cloud services at record rates. This deperimeterization of enterprise computing architectures depends on software as a service (SaaS) and makes traditional perimeter-based defense controls less effective. We propose a service-oriented threat modeling approach that focuses on the perspective of a service consumer. We supplement our approach by providing an implementation view that includes technical details of service implementations that can be queried to identify potential vulnerabilities in the system. Our approach differs from existing threat modeling methods in that we seek to capture interactions between services in a technologically agnostic manner. This extends the applicability of our model into the realm of security operations. A case study and proof-of-concept are presented to validate our approach and demonstrate how such a model can be used to provide meaningful support for operations engineers.

A model for correlation-based choreographic programming

Choreographies provide a clear way to specify the intended communication behaviour of concurrent and distributed systems. Previous theoretical work investigated the translation of choreographies into (models of) programs based on message passing. However, existing theories still present a gap between how they model communications-using channel names & agrave;la CCS or p-calculus-and implementations-which use lower-level mechanisms for message routing. We start bridging this gap with a new formal framework called Applied Choreographies. In Applied Choreographies, developers write choreographies in a familiar syntax (from previous work) and reason about their behaviour through simple, abstract name-based communication semantics. The framework offers state-of-the-art features of choreographic models, e.g., modular programming supported via choreographic types. To provide its correctness guarantee, Applied Choreographies comes with a compilation procedure that transforms a choreography into a low-level, implementation-adherent calculus of service-oriented computing (SOC). To manage the complexity of the compilation, we divide its formalisation and proof into three stages, respectively dealing with: (a) the translation of name-based communications into their SOC equivalents, namely, using correlation mechanisms based on message data;(b) the projection of the given choreography into a composition of partial, single-participant choreographies (towards their translation into SOC processes);(c) the translation of partial choreographies and the distribution of global, choreography-level state into local SOC processes. We provide behavioural correspondence results for each stage. Thus, given a choreography specification, we guarantee to synthesise its faithful service-oriented implementation.

Modeling-framework for model-based software engineering of complex Internet of things systems

Internet of things (IoT) systems are composed of variety of units from different domains. While developing a complete IoT system, different professionals from different domains may have to work in collaboration. In this paper we provide a framework which allows using discrete and continuous time modeling and simulation approaches in combination for IoT systems. The proposed framework demonstrates on how to model Ad-hoc and general IoT systems for software engineering purpose. We demonstrate that model-based software engineering on one hand can provide a common platform to overcome communication gaps among collaborating stakeholders whereas, on the other hand can model and integrate heterogeneous components of IoT systems. While modeling heterogeneous IoT systems, one of the major challenges is to apply continuous and discrete time modeling on intrinsically varying components of the system. Another difficulty may be how to compose these heterogeneous components into one whole system. The proposed framework provides a road-map to model discrete, continuous, Ad-hoc, general systems along with composition mechanism of heterogeneous subsystems. The framework uses a combination of Agent-based modeling, Aspect-oriented modeling, contract-based modeling and services-oriented modeling concepts. We used this framework to model a scenario example of a service-oriented IoT system as proof of concept. We analyzed our framework with existing systems and discussed it in details. Our framework provides a mechanism to model different viewpoints. The framework also enhances the completeness and consistency of the IoT software models.

An accurate and efficient web service QoS prediction model with wide-range awareness

With the wide spread and deepening of service-oriented computing, more and more enterprises and organizations are constructing their applications by integrating third-party Web services in the cloud nowadays. Building high-quality applications has long been a critical research issue. Quality of service (QoS) prediction provides valuable information for making optimal Web service selection from a set of functionally equivalent candidate services. Commonly, collaborative filtering technique like matrix factorization (MF) is implemented for predicting unknown QoS values, and most of them are built via modeling user-service interaction based on QoS data directly or take side information such as geographical location, network autonomous region into account. Due to the overlook of the implicit but important wide-range characteristic of QoS data, existing MF methods might incur high users' and services' biases, and their prediction accuracy will not be good enough if we are faced with such wide-range of QoS data. In this work, we first investigate the wide-range characteristic among users and services via real-world Web service QoS dataset, and argue that such observed finding is an essential factor for accurate QoS prediction. We then propose a novel prediction model named Wide-Range Aware Matrix Factorization (WRAMF), which tackles the wide-range influence via bias information combination and an active function mapping explicitly. The proposed WRAMF model is advantageous to existing MF-based models, which optimizes the model by an adaptive learning rate strategy that guides WRAMF to approach the optimal solution accurately, and trains the model by a well-designed parallel stochastic gradient descent algorithm efficiently. Comprehensive experiments are conducted by employing real-world QoS dataset and empirical results show that our WRAMF significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.
