Internet-of-Things (IoT) is no longer just a research hype, but rather a reality in which ICT plays a fundamental role. Programming the behavior of Smart Environments not only enables designers to create innovative interactive experiences for intelligent spaces, but also empowers their inhabitants to tailor the intelligent facilities according to their preferences. To that end, this paper presents the AmI-Solertis system that offers a complete suite of tools allowing management, programming, testing, and monitoring of all the individual artifacts (i.e., services, hardware modules, software components, etc.) of a Smart Environment, but also of the environment itself as a whole. In more details, it introduces a REST-based communication middleware that streamlines synchronous and asynchronous remote services usage. Moreover, it presents the AmI-Solertis web-IDE that aims to support users who wish to create, explore, deploy, and optimize behavior scripts that combine and orchestrate the various technological facilities of Smart Environments, by offering universal and personalized exploration facilities to accelerate their discovery and a web-based code editor with context-sensitive support features.

In this paper, we claim that the World Wide Web provides a suitable middleware for Internet-scale, open, and human-centric multi-agent systems. The novelty of our approach is to design the agent environment as a hypermedia application. We apply REST, the architectural style of the Web, to introduce a resource-oriented abstraction layer that decouples the application environment from its deployment context. Higher-level environment abstractions can then be implemented on top of this lower-level abstraction layer. To demonstrate our approach, we implemented a multi-agent application for the Internet of Things in which software agents can seamlessly navigate, use, and cooperate in an environment deployed over multiple Web services (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) and constrained devices.

With the increasing popularity of utility-oriented computing where the resources are traded as services, efficient management of quality of service (QoS) has become increasingly significant to both service consumers and service providers. In the context of distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented computing, how to ensure the stringent QoS requirements of the content adaptation is a significant and immediate challenge. However, QoS guarantees in the distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented platform context have not been accorded the attention it deserves. In this paper, we address this problem. We formulate the SLA management for distributed multimedia content adaptation deployment on service-oriented computing as an integer programming problem. We propose an SLA management framework that enables the service provider to determine deliverable QoS before settling SLA with potential service consumers to optimize QoS guarantees. We analyzed the performance of the proposed strategy under various conditions in terms of the SLA success rate, rejection rate and impact of the resource data errors on potential violation of the agreed upon SLA. We also compared the proposed SLA management framework with a baseline approach in which the distributed multimedia content adaptation is deployed on a service-oriented platform without SLA consideration. The results of the experiments show that the proposed SLA management framework substantially outperforms the baseline approach confirming that SLA management is a core requirement for the deployment of distributed multimedia content adaptation on service-oriented systems.

The proliferation of sensor devices and services along with the advances in event processing brings many new opportunities as well as challenges. It is now possible to provide, analyze and react upon real-time, complex events in urban environments. When existing event services do not provide such complex events directly, an event service composition maybe required. However, it is difficult to determine which event service candidates (or service compositions) best suit users' and applications' quality-of-service requirements. A sub-optimal service composition may lead to inaccurate event detection, lack of system robustness etc. In this paper, the authors address these issues by first providing a quality-of-service aggregation schema for complex event service compositions and then developing a genetic algorithm to efficiently create near-optimal event service compositions. The authors evaluate their approach with both real sensor data collected via Internet-of-Things services as well as synthesised datasets.

service composition provides a means of customized and flexible integration of service functionalities. Quality-of-service (QoS) optimization algorithms select services to adapt workflows to the non-functional requirements of the user. With increasing number of services in a workflow, previous approaches fail to achieve a sufficient reliability. Moreover, expensive ad-hoc replanning is required to deal with service failures. The major problem with such sequential application of planning and replanning is that it ignores the potential costs during the initial planning and they consequently are hidden from the decision maker. Our idea to overcome this problem is to compute a QoS optimized selection of service clusters that includes a sufficient number of backup services for each service employed. These backup services should be sufficiently distributed to prevent a task failure in case of, e.g., a network failure. To support the decision maker in the selection task, our multi-objective approach considers the possible repair costs directly in the initial composition. Our graphical user interface visualizes the resulting QoS of the workflow and the location of the services to enable the decision maker to select compositions in line with risk preferences. We prove the benefits of our approach in our detailed evaluation.

A new method to identify collaborative partners in social service provider networks

The interactions among service providers are represented as a social network to support service-oriented collaborations across multiple manufacturing enterprises. The combination of service-oriented computing and social network facilitates the connection and collaboration within enterprises. It is essential to identify a group of prosperous collaborative partners in a social network in a prompt and efficient way, especially when the number of alternative service providers is large. However, traditional exhaustive searching approaches are inapplicable in identifying a host enterprise and constitutive members due to the prohibitive computations. In this paper, a new and efficient approach has been proposed to identify service providers optimally based on existing social relations. Three innovations in the proposal are (i) a set of new concepts has been defined to construct a social service provider network;(ii) based on remodeling the social graph, the betweenness centrality algorithm has been enhanced to efficiently find the leader who serves as the host enterprise of a given engineering project;(iii) to improve the efficiency of computation, an innovative algorithm is proposed to identify the collaborative partners by confining the searching space in the set of connector nodes. For the validation purpose, the experimental simulation is conducted and the results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithms outperform several existing algorithms in terms of computation time in dealing with the increasing number of enterprises.

service oriented computing EnviRonment (SORCER) is a Java-based network-centric computing platform. SORCER provides a service oriented architecture, which enables the implementation of parallel algorithms in a dynamic distributed computing environment. SORCER is often used for multidisciplinary aircraft design analysis and optimization. However, the current approach often assigns intense optimization algorithms to run entirely on single overloaded nodes, rather than evenly distributing the workload. The goal of this work is to provide lower-level optimization algorithms as integrated SORCER services and study the overhead of doing so. VTDIRECT95, a Fortran 95 implementation of D. R. Jones' algorithm DIRECT, is a highly parallelizable derivative-free deterministic global optimization algorithm. QNSTOP is a parallel quasi-Newton algorithm for stochastic optimization problems. The potential benefit of integrating VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP into the SORCER framework is to provide dynamic load balancing among computational resources at the optimization level, resulting in a dynamically scalable process.

In this paper we propose a hierarchical cloud architecture for integrated mobility, service, and trust management of service-oriented Internet of Things (IoT) systems. This architecture supports scalability, reconfigurability, fault tolerance, and resiliency against cloud node failure and network disconnection, and can benefit both network operators and cloud service providers. In particular, leveraging this architecture we develop a cloud-based trust protocol to provide trustworthiness assessment of loT devices. With air pollution detection as an example IoT application, we demonstrate that our cloud-based trust protocol built upon the proposed cloud hierarchy outperforms existing distributed IoT trust management protocols.

The provision of IT solutions over electronic marketplaces became prominent in recent years. We call such marketplaces IT service markets. IT service markets have some core architectural building blocks that impact the quality attributes of these markets. However, these building blocks and their impacts are not well-known. Thus, design choices for IT service markets have been made ad-hoc until now. Furthermore, only single aspects of such markets have been investigated until now, but a comprehensive view is missing. In this paper, we identify common features and their interrelations on the basis of a systematic literature review of 60 publications using grounded theory. This knowledge provides an empirical evidence on the interdisciplinary design choices of IT service markets and it serves as a basis to support market providers and developers to integrate market features. Thereby, we make a first step towards the creation of a reference model for IT service markets that provides a holistic integrated view that can be used to create and maintain successful markets in the future.
