A sigmoid-Weighted-Consensus for Balancing Multiple Battery Energy Storage Systems

In this article, a weighted-consensus strategy for state-of-charge (SoC) balancing, voltage regulation and accurate current sharing in a dc microgrid (MG) composed of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) is presented. The consensus strategy is applied in association with a S-shape function known as sigmoid function, a common activation function in neural networks. By a neighbor-to-neighbor communication, each BESS exchange its SoC information to achieve faster SoC balancing and uses only its capacity for accurate current sharing. The sigmoid functions ensure continuity and differentiability of the system around the charging/discharging of the BESSs and guarantee the SoC balancing even if the graph becomes disconnected by communication failures or if the consensus is switched-off. As each BESS uses its own information in the weighted-consensus, the resilience against attacks and communication time-delays is increased. When all SoCs are within operational limits, the strategy avoids circulating currents in the MG by forcing all BESSs either charge or discharge simultaneously. However, if the SoC limits are violated, simultaneous charge and discharge among BESSs in a low rate is allowed to satisfy the limits. Experimental tests show the feasibility of the proposed approach and its faster SoC balancing in relation to advanced methods in the literature.

In the present article, the author investigates some properties of fractional analytic function g(m) (z)(alpha), belonging to two new subclasses of m-fold symmetric starlike and convex functions in the open unit disk. In addition, properties of certain new subclass T-m,n(alpha)(beta), of m-fold symmetric bi-Bazilevic functions associated with modified sigmoid functions are considered while several other corollaries follow as simple consequences.

Trajectory planning and optimisation method for intelligent vehicle lane changing emergently

The real time and adaptability of emergency lane-changing trajectory planning method is critical to the safe operation of the intelligent vehicle. This study presents the design and implementation of the trajectory planning and optimisation method of intelligent vehicle lane changing emergently based on hp-adaptive pseudospectral method. The method divides the emergency lane-changing process into the initial stage and tracking stage for trajectory planning based on road steering experiment and sigmoid functions. An hp-adaptive pseudospectral method is introduced to connect and optimise the lane-changing trajectory. PreScan and Matlab are used to simulate the planning of emergency lane-changing trajectory under six conditions, and the simulation results verify the effectiveness and real time of the planning and optimisation method. In comparison with trajectory planning methods based on polynomial functions, this method is characterised by shorter response time and safety distance and has better adaptability under different conditions.

The game 'contract bridge' is one of the most widely known card games comprising many fascinating aspects, such as bidding, playing and winning the trick including estimation of hand strength, the additional input data based on the human knowledge of the game to improve the quality of results. The game classified under a game of imperfect information is to be equally well-defined, since the decision made on any stage of the game is purely based on the decision that was made on the immediate preceding stage. The incompleteness of information, the real spirit of the card game in proceeding further deals of the game are taking into many forms especially during the distribution of cards for the next deal. One among the architectures of the Artificial Neural Network is considered by training on sample deals and used to estimate the number of tricks taken by one pair of bridge players is the key idea behind the Double Dummy Bridge Problem, implemented in this paper. The Cascade Correlation Neural Network architecture with supervised learning implemented to train data and hence to test it is coupled along with Work point count system. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Polynomial representations of piecewise-linear differential equations arising from gene regulatory networks

We describe generic sliding modes of piecewise-linear systems of differential equations arising in the theory of gene regulatory networks with Boolean interactions. We do not make any a priori assumptions on regulatory functions in the network and try to understand what mathematical consequences this may have in regard to the limit dynamics of the system. Further, we provide a complete classification of such systems in terms of polynomial representations for the cases where the discontinuity set of the right-hand side of the system has a codimension 1 in the phase space. In particular, we prove that the multilinear representation of the underlying Boolean structure of a continuous-time gene regulatory network is only generic in the absence of sliding trajectories. Our results also explain why the Boolean structure of interactions is too coarse and usually gives rise to several non-equivalent models with smooth interactions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Scale-Free Hyperbolic CORDIC Processor and Its Application to Waveform Generation

This paper presents a novel completely scaling-free CORDIC algorithm in rotation mode for hyperbolic trajectory. We use most-significant-1 bit detection technique for micro-rotation sequence generation to reduce the number of iterations. By storing the sinh/cosh hyperbolic values at octant boundaries in a ROM, we can extend the range of convergence to the entire coordinate space. Based on this, we propose a pipeline hyperbolic CORDIC processor to implement a direct digital synthesizer (DDS). The DDS is further used to derive an efficient arbitrary waveform generator (AWG), where a pseudo-random number generator modulates the linear increments of phase to produce random phase-modulated waveform. The proposed waveform generator requires only one DDS for generating variety of modulated waveforms, while existing designs require separate DDS units for different type of waveforms, and multiple DDS units are required to generate composite waveforms. Therefore, area complexity of existing designs gets multiplied with the number of different types waveforms they generate, while in case of proposed design that remains unchanged. The proposed AWG when mapped on Xilinx Spartan 2E device, consumes 1076 slices and 2016 4-input LUTs. The proposed AWG involves significantly less area and lower latency, with nearly the same throughput compared to the existing CORDIC-based designs.

Multi-morphology transition hybridization CAD design of minimal surface porous structures for use in tissue engineering

There has been considerable work on scaffold design based on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS). Current methods used to adjust the parameters in one type of TPMS model are insufficiently flexible for designing architectures comprising multiple porous structures. In this paper, we propose two CAD methods that combine different TPMS-based structures with given transition boundaries. One method is a sigmoid function (SF) method that can be effectively applied to simple transition boundary cases. The second method is a Gaussian radial basis function (GRBF) method that can be applied to more general cases. These methods provide for placing given TPMS-based substructures on given 3D subspaces with perfect transitions to their adjacent substructures within a scaffold domain. We present various examples of functionally graded porous structures with desired internal porous structures and external geometries to demonstrate the effectiveness of these two methods. Analysis and generic properties of gene regulatory networks with graded response functions

The mass of new genomic data has lead to a growing interest in gene regulatory models describing the regulatory aspects of gene activity. In these models, the rates of change of gene product concentrations are expressed as a sum of regulatory switches in terms of sums of products of sigmoid functions, mimicking complex logical on-off functions turning gene activity on and off. The customary way to analyse such equations is to replace the sigmoid functions by step functions and disregard models with autoregulation. This leads to discontinuous equations of motion, but in models without autoregulation, continuous solutions can easily be obtained. With effective autoregulation this simple approach breaks down. As real regulators have finite gain, and autoregulation is ubiquitous in biological systems, we propose a generalised gene regulatory model framework admitting autoregulation and graded sigmoid functions with different steepnesses. Using singular perturbation analysis methods we derive a set of reformulated, continuous equations for the limit solution when the sigmoids approach step functions, and show that the solution for steep sigmoids approaches this limit solution uniformly in a finite time interval. A conspicuous feature of the limit solution is so-called sliding motion during which the solution slides along a threshold hyperplane or the intersection of such hyperplanes. A particular mapping leads to a dual picture of the flow, where the fast parts are magnified at the expense of the slow parts. Combining the two dual pictures, a simple and powerful method to analyse the flow is obtained. We show that for steep sigmoid functions the flow may be highly sensitive to the relative steepnesses of the sigmoids. This has important consequences when stochastic effects are taken into account. The advantages of using impact resonance test in dynamic modulus master curve construction through the abbreviated test protocol

Asphalt concrete behavior is heavily dependent on temperature and loading rate. Hence, the material is typically tested at a range of temperatures and loading frequencies to capture its properties. Results are then used to develop a master curve exhibiting material behavior at the full spectrum of loading frequencies. An abbreviated testing protocol, under AASHTO PP 61-13, proposes a practical approach for development of this master curve. In this practice, the low temperature asymptote of the master curve is dominated by the limiting maximum modulus estimated through the Hirsch model. In this study, the dynamic modulus (DM) testing coupled with impact resonance (IR) test was used to evaluate the effect of this limiting maximum modulus on construction of the asphalt concrete master curve. Three different asphalt mixtures prepared with the same gradation and binder content, but different grades of stiffness were tested. The DM testing was performed at multiple temperatures and loading frequencies. The IR tests were conducted on the same specimens at the same temperatures. Two sigmoid functions (MEPDG and Richards models), and three shift factors (Arrhenius, Williams-Landel-Ferry, and polynomial) were utilized in the analysis. Richards sigmoid function coupled with polynomial shift factor provided the best fitting accuracy to the measured data. It was observed that the limiting maximum modulus obtained from experimental data was under-predicted by that obtained from the Hirsch model. The results indicated potential benefits of the IR test as a complementary testing tool to the abbreviated DM testing protocol to reliably characterize asphalt concrete.

Tackling the taxonomic impediment: a global assessment for ant-nest beetle diversity (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Paussini)

We evaluated the completeness and historical trends of the taxonomic knowledge of the myrmecophilous ground beetle tribe Paussini (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Paussinae). Species accumulation curves were modelled using a logistic function. Similar analyses were conducted for genera and subgenera. Although not all biogeographical regions have been equally explored, accumulation curves reached a plateau in all cases. Our models predict that about 96% of the world fauna has been already described. However, the asymptotes calculated for the Australian and Oriental species should be interpreted as false plateaus because of the lack of recent research. Similarly, patterns of genera accumulation indicate that a plateau has been reached. As a result of continued debate on the use and validity of Paussini subgenera, the accumulation curves of subgenera showed stepped patterns, with no evidence of plateaus. Thus, although relatively few species are expected to be described in the future, the species accumulation curves indicate that the taxonomic inventory is not yet complete. Differences in accumulation patterns among biogeographical regions can be used to highlight the areas where more species are expected, and hence where taxonomical efforts should be concentrated.
