Metamaterial (MM) slabs in close proximity can couple with one another. This coupling can modify the electromagnetic response of the overall MM structure involving individual MM resonators. The signal flow graph technique along with the ABCD parameters are applied to quantitatively and qualitatively examine this coupling from simulated/measured scattering parameters of cascade connection of closely or largely separated MM slabs. S-parameter measurements of a MM slab constructed by split-ring-resonators were carried out at X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) to validate our theoretical analysis.

Novel representations for a coherent threshold reliability system: a tale of eight signal flow graphs

A threshold system is a reliability system whose success/failure is a threshold switching function in the successes/failures of its components. A coherent system (CS) is one that is causal, monotone, and with relevant components. The coherent threshold system (CTS), typically called the weighted k-out-of-n system, is consequently described by strictly positive weights and threshold. This paper presents recursive relations as well as boundary conditions for eight entities pertaining to a CTS. These are (a) expressions of monoform literals as well as disjoint or probability ready expressions for either system success or failure, and (b) all-additive formulas as well as inclusion-exclusion ones for either system reliability or unreliability. These entities are obtained according to the best policy of implementing the Boole Shannon expansion with respect to a higher-weight component before it is made with respect to a lower-weight one. With this best policy, the success and failure expressions with monoform literals are both minimal and shellable. Each of the eight entities considered is represented by an acyclic (loopless) signal flow graph (SFG). The SFG for system success or failure is isomorphic to a reduced ordered binary decision diagram, which is the optimal data structure for a Boolean function. The interrelations between the SFGs demonstrate optimal procedures for implementing (a) the probability (real) transform of a Boolean function, (b) inversion or complementation of a Boolean function, and (c) disjointing or orthogonalization of a sum-of-products expression of a Boolean function. The SFGs discussed herein for a CT can be extended to a general coherent system. They reduce to elegant symmetric regular graphs for the special case of a partially redundant system (k-out-of-n system).

An Iterative Transfer Matrix Computation Method for Propagation graphs in Multiroom Environments

This letter presents a reduced complexity method for computing the transfer matrix of wireless channels in complex indoor environments with a large number of rooms using propagation graphs. Multiroom indoor environments can be represented in a vector signal flow graph with rooms in the complex structure as nodes and propagation between rooms as branches. We propose an iterative procedure to compute the transfer matrix of such complex graphs. The state vector for each node in the graph is iteratively computed until convergence. The state vector for the room(s) with the receiver is then used to compute the transfer function. We show via simulations that the proposed approach closely approximates the original model at much reduced complexity.

Loop Reversal Rule in Block Diagram and signal flow graph Manipulation

We propose a new rule, loop reversal, in block diagram and signal flow graph manipulation (or transformation) that leads to equivalent block diagrams or signal flow graphs from existing ones. It is known that "algebraic loops" can exist in some systems, where different choices of causality end up with different yet equivalent block diagrams or signal flow graphs, in which some are loop reversed versions of others. However, to the author's knowledge, loop reversal has not been discussed in the context of block diagram or signal flow graph manipulation, and is still missing from textbooks teaching this topic.

A method for placing logic cells of integrated circuits (IC) that takes into account the functional and logical features of the circuit. The proposed method is based on taking into account the flow of signals in the logic circuit. According to the proposed approach, a preliminary ranking of logical cells is performed, the results of which are later used in their placement. In accordance with the proposed method, an algorithm and software tool for allocation of logic ICs have been developed. Testing the program on test circuits showed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Unified Analysis of the signal Transfer Characteristics of a Single-Path FET-R-C Circuit

A frequently occurring subcircuit consists of a loop of a resistor (R), a field-effect transistor (FET), and a capacitor (C). The FET acts as a switch, controlled at its gate terminal by a clock voltage. This subcircuit may be acting as a sample-and-hold (S/H), as a passive mixer (P-M), or as a bandpass filter or bandpass impedance. In this work, we will present a useful analysis that leads to a simple signal flow graph (SFG), which captures the FET-R-C circuit's action completely across a wide range of design parameters. The SFG dissects the circuit into three filtering functions and ideal sampling. This greatly simplifies analysis of frequency response, noise, input impedance, and conversion gain, and leads to guidelines for optimum design. This paper focuses on the analysis of a single-path FETR-C circuit's signal transfer characteristics including the reconstruction of the complete waveform from the discrete-time sampled voltage.

Improving the accuracy of thermal power plant simulators is the primary goal of simulator developers. There are many fluid networks in a thermal power plant. The accuracy of the simulator is entirely dependent on the quality of the simulation of these fluid networks. Fluid network theory is a method that combines grid with fluid mechanics to study the transport state and transience of fluids. This study focused on designing a rapid modeling method to model the fluid dynamics in thermal power plants using a data driven mechanism analysis. First, the mechanism model structure of the fluid network was established based on mechanism analysis of the key devices. The mechanism model was devised using the concept of node and branch in the signal flow graph. Next, the undetermined parameters in the structure model were identified using historical data and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In this way, the fluid network model could be developed quickly. The modeling process has been described herein, considering two specific examples.

Performance optimization of an optical filter based on serially coupled microring resonators using a fuzzy logic system

The signal flow graph method based on Mason's rule has been used to simulate a serially coupled triple microring resonator (SCTMRR) optical filter. One of the most important parameters of MRRs is the coupling coefficient. Therefore, calculating the optimum value of this parameter is one of the key challenges to design optical filters. The fuzzy logic system has been used to find mentioned coefficients. The fuzzy system inputs are the on-off ratio, shape factor (SF), and propagation loss parameters of the SCTMRR. The obtained results have been verified by comparison with authentic published works. It has been shown that to achieve minimum ripple and maximum SF of filter drop port response, the internal coupling coefficients should be smaller than the external ones. Just on the basis of fuzzy logic results, it has been proved that SF of the SCTMRR filter could not be >0.6. (C) 2019 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

This paper presents an oscilloscope based load pull measurement system for an ultra-wideband ranging chip. Such a system is intended to characterize a chips radio frequency circuits' behavior under different operating conditions. The gathered measurement results should then be used for the optimization of the chips external circuitry, to reduce power consumption and improve pulse shaping. In this way we want to accomplish longer battery lifetime and higher ranging accuracy. By postprocessing the measurement results the de-embedding of the measurement circuitry is accomplished. Using verification measurements, we validate the performance of the measurement setup and the implemented postprocessing approach.

The new single-ended (S-E) second order frequency filter providing transfer function of Low Pass (LP), High Pass (HP), Band Pass (BP), Band Stop (BS) and All Pass (AP) is presented in this paper. The cut-off frequency is tunable up to 3 MHz. Also the fully-differential (F-D) version of the filter is presented and so is the transformation method which is in this case the signal flow graph (SFG). The design filter can be implemented with discretive active devices or as an Integrated Circuit (IC). The features of both S-E and F-D filters are verified using PSpice simulations comparing ideal and behavioral models of the active devices.
