The present work focuses on reducing dropout voltage and noise by exploiting the unique advantages of a complementary silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (C-SiGe HBT) on SOI technology. We also explore the impact of utilizing different PNP device types on regulator performance. Design challenges arose from the off-chip load capacitor required to meet the specification of the instantaneous peak output voltage drop. To overcome these challenges, a right-hand plane (RHP) to left-hand plane (LHP) zero conversion technique with a nulling Miller resistor was applied. The complete solutions for the locations of the converted left-hand plane zero and the Miller pole affected by the nulling resistor were derived utilizing signal flow graphs without any assumptions commonly made in the literature. Two C-SiGe LDO regulators with two different types of PNP output devices were fabricated utilizing a commercially-available C-SiGe on SOI technology, and compared with the literature.

Higher-order differentiation of network functions using signal flow graphs

This paper presents the application of signal flow graphs (SFG) in the calculation of higher-order derivatives (sensitivities) of the linear circuit functions. The idea of exact differentiation of the circuit functions is based on the adjoint networks, translated into SFG language. Thanks to its application, it is possible to calculate the exact value of any order derivative of circuit function without knowing this function in explicit form. Moreover, these derivatives can be determined on the basis of analysis of only two graphs (circuits): the original and adjoint one. We show that the SFG approach to the sensitivity calculation allows to reduce greatly the complexity of calculations. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Characteristic analysis on an interleaver with a fiber loop resonator by using a signal flow graph method

We propose an interleaver based oil the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a resonator incorporated in one ann. By using the method of signal flow graph, we get the simple closed-form expressions for transmission of this interleaver. The result indicates that the widths of 0.5 dB passband and 25 dB stopband of the interleaver are improved remarkably, which are much wider than that of the conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The interleaver proposed has an ideal rectangular spectral response. Finally, we have analyzed the influence exerted by the parameters on its transimission characteristics and found that the transmission spectrum of this device depends highly oil the intensity coupling coefficient of the coupler and fiber loop length.

A versatile signal flow graph realization of a general current transfer function

A general synthesis procedure is given for a versatile signal flow graph realization of a general current transfer function by using multi-output second generation current controlled current conveyors (MO-CCCIIs). The proposed configuration uses n + 1 multi-output second generation cur-rent conveyors (MO-CCIIs), n capacitors and at most 2(n + 1) resistors. This number of resistors can be reduced to n for special cases. Using MO-CCCIIs instead of MO-CCIIs, the resistors can be removed completely for the nth-order universal structure. The general transfer function having any numerator dynamics can be derived from the universal structure by using a single MO-CCCII and at most n + I resistors. It is very easy to find the values of the passive elements from the coefficients of the transfer function to be realized. The validity of the proposed synthesis is verified through PSpice simulations. (C) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The structure of dynamic neural networks and their on-line learning algorithm are two important factors for NAICSs (nonlinear adaptive inverse control system). Recurrent neural networks are effective identifiers for nonlinear plant. However, they have complex architecture. In order to simplify the structure of dynamic neural networks, this paper proposed an improved DAFNN (dynamic activation function neural network) by changing the neurons' structure. The modified DFANN with the same simple feedforward architecture as the origin one had better dynamic ability. Gradient. vectors calculation becomes the chief bottleneck for learning algorithms of DAFNNs due to its complex chain rule expansions. A new on-line learning algorithm was proposed to simplify the proceeding of gradient calculation for DAFNNs in this paper according to signal flow graph theory. The new algorithm had adaptive learning rates to guarantee its convergence. The algorithm was used as the learning algorithms of identifier and controller in NAICSs. Simulation results show it is an efficient algorithm for NAICSs.

A general synthesis procedure is given for a versatile signal flow graph realization of a general transfer function by using current differencing buffered amplifier (CDBA). The proposed configuration uses n + 1 CDBAs, n capacitors and at most 2n + 4 resistors. This number of resistors can be reduced to n + I for special cases. The circuit is eligible to obtain a variety of transfer characteristics with the same common denominator polynomial, and it is easily converted to different modes of operations. It is straightforward to find the values of the passive elements from the coefficients of the transfer function to be realized. Simulations results are obtained by using commercially available active component AD844 and CMOS technology as well. All of these make the proposed circuit attractive. (c) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. Small signal modelling of open-loop SEPIC converters

This study presents the application of a signal flow graph and the Mason's gain formula for deriving small signal models of open-loop single ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) converters. The control to output and the input to output transfer functions are derived. Conventional modelling methods using the averaging and small signal linearisation techniques are powerful for basic converters like buck and boost. However, for high-order converters like SEPIC, solving of high-order symbolic equations becomes complex and difficult. In this study, the application of the signal flow graph and the Mason's gain formula help the manipulation of equations. Thus, derivation of small signal models can be easily carried out in detail. Theoretical and measured results are shown to verify the accuracy of the derived small signal models.

Current mode leapfrog ladder filters using a new active block

In this paper, a new multi-terminal active component, namely current backward transconductance amplifier (CBTA) is proposed. The design procedure for the systematic realization of current-mode ladder filters using proposed active component is also presented. In order to demonstrate that the CBTA considerably simplifies the leapfrog structure of the current-mode ladder filters, a fifth-order Butterworth low-pass filter that requires a minimum of active components is presented. Kinematic Analysis of Planetary Gear Systems Using Block Diagrams

This paper employs control techniques to analyze kinematic relationships via block diagrams for planetary gear systems. The revealed tangent-velocity equations at each contact point of the mechanical gearsets are utilized to plot the block diagrams. Then, the concepts of feedback and feedforward strategies are adopted to illustrate speed-reduction and increasing functions in kinematics with sensitivity analysis. The structural difference between unusual planetary gears and common ones is also explained based on the characteristic equation of feedback strategies for structural constraints in terms of stability conditions. A cam-controlled planetary gear is further illustrated for the constraint and kinematic analysis by using the block diagram technique and characteristic equation, and the computational simulations for the sensitivity and the motion output of this planetary gear are obtained. Through the correspondence between control and kinematics, this paper provides a guide for engineers in various fields to easily understand the function of mechanical design. This paper presents signal flow graph nonlinear modeling of two-cell cascade buck converters. A systematic procedure for developing the unified flow graph model of the cascade converter is discussed. A simplified procedure is described that can be used to deduce large, small-signal and steady-state models from the unified signal flow graph of the converter. Converter performance expressions, and small-signal and steady-state transfer functions are derived. The large-signal model is developed and programmed into a TUTSIM simulator. Converter large-signal responses are obtained against supply and load disturbances. The validity of the proposed signal flow graph modeling of cascade converters is verified and comparisons are made via PSIM simulator results. A few experimental results are provided to verify the proposed method.
