Block-Sparse signal Recovery via General Total Variation Regularized Sparse Bayesian Learning

One of the main challenges in block-sparse signal recovery, as encountered in, e.g., multi-antenna mmWave channel models, is block-patterned estimation without knowledge of block sizes and boundaries. We propose a novel Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) method for block-sparse signal recovery under unknown block patterns. Contrary to conventional approaches that impose block-promoting regularization on the signal components, we apply two classes of hyperparameter regularizers for the SBL cost function, inspired by total variation (TV) denoising. The first class relies on a conventional TV difference unit and allows performing the SBL inference iteratively through a set of convex optimization problems, enabling a flexible choice of numerical solvers. The second class incorporates a region-aware TV penalty to penalize the signal and zero blocks in a dissimilar manner, enhancing the performance. We derive an alternating optimization algorithm based on expectation-maximization to perform the SBL inference through computationally efficient parallel updates for both the regularizer classes. The numerical results show that the proposed TV-regularized SBL algorithm is robust to the nature of the block structure and is capable of recovering signals with both block-patterned and isolated components, proving effective for various signal recovery systems.

Mismatched Binary Hypothesis Testing: Error Exponent Sensitivity

We study the problem of mismatched binary hypothesis testing between i.i.d. distributions. We analyze the tradeoff between the pairwise error probability exponents when the actual distributions generating the observation are different from the distributions used in the likelihood ratio test, sequential probability ratio test, and Hoeffding's generalized likelihood ratio test in the composite setting. When the real distributions are within a small divergence ball of the test distributions, we find the deviation of the worst-case error exponent of each test with respect to the matched error exponent. In addition, we consider the case where an adversary tampers with the observation, again within a divergence ball of the observation type. We show that the tests are more sensitive to distribution mismatch than to adversarial observation tampering.

Distributed and Scalable Uplink processing for LIS: Algorithm, Architecture, and Design Trade-Offs

The Large Intelligent Surface (LIS) is a promising technology in the areas of wireless communication, remote sensing and positioning. It consists of a continuous radiating surface located in the proximity of the users, with the capability to communicate by transmission and reception (replacing base stations). Despite its potential, there are numerous challenges from an implementation point of view, with the interconnection data-rate, computational complexity, and storage the most relevant ones. In order to address these challenges, hierarchical architectures with distributed processing techniques are envisioned to be relevant for this task, while ensuring scalability. In this work we perform algorithm-architecture codesign to propose two distributed interference cancellation algorithms, and a tree-based interconnection topology for uplink processing. We also analyze the performance, hardware requirements, and architecture trade-offs for a discrete LIS, in order to provide concrete case studies and guidelines for efficient implementation of LIS systems.

NA-MEMD Is Actually What You Need for Computational Pulse Analysis

Time-frequency analysis is of necessity for wrist pulse signal due to its complexity, among which, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm and its improved noise-assisted versions (such as ensemble EMD, noise-assisted multivariate EMD (NA-MEMD) and very recently median EMD) are deemed to be the most representative ones. In this study, we provide an in-depth evaluation of these well-established noise-assisted EMD algorithms in computational pulse analysis for the first time. In particular, we compare the performance of the different algorithms systematically and quantitatively based on objective quantitative criteria: number and central frequency of intrinsic mode function (IMF) components, total orthogonality index and mode mixing. Rather than using synthetic signals with visual inspection in most existing literature, the wrist pulse signals used in the evaluation are real recorded samples acquired from both healthy and patient subjects. Through extensive experiments, we found that: 1) Advanced EMD algorithm that has the best performance in other areas may not be the most suitable method for pulse signal analysis, which indicates its high dependence on the type of analyzed signal;2) Adding noise can improve algorithm performance significantly, but tends to produce physiologically irrelevant components, which however are usually neglected throughout the intelligent pulse diagnosis literature. Therefore, excluding redundant components before extracting features is expected to improve performance further. Together, currently NA-MEMD achieves a better performance consistently, potential to become a powerful tool for computational pulse analysis, but itself have not been applied in wrist pulse analysis before. We believe our works can bring up a new perspective to application of EMD-like algorithms in computational pulse analysis/diagnosis with effective information and guidance. In this article, we review various motivations, algorithms, and methods for explaining either the workings of generative/creative AI algorithms or the generative/creative artifacts they produce.

PIR-Sensor-Based Surveillance Tool for Intruder Detection in Secured Environment: A Label-Consistency-Based Modified Sequential Dictionary Learning Approach

In modern days, the importance of developing intelligent surveillance tools for activities of daily living is rising day by day. Identifying intruder(s) among the people who have access to a secured environment is crucial to achieve a flawless surveillance system in residential and office environments. This present work shows how a novel dictionary learning (DL) algorithm-based approach can be combined with four pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor-based indigenously developed hardware modules to design an intruder detection system. A novel DL approach is proposed combining the concepts of label consistency (LC) with a modified consistent adaptive sequential DL approach, named here as the LC-based modified consistent adaptive sequential DL (LC-MCAS-DL) algorithm. The conventional objective function in DL has been reformulated here by introducing the LC constraints along with reconstruction and classification errors. Then, the solution of this objective function is obtained by using a modified version of the consistent adaptive sequential DL algorithm (MCAS-DL). Extensive experiments have been performed to establish the suitability of our proposed approach for the problem under consideration.

DFT-Based Frequency Estimation of Multiple Sinusoids

An accurate frequency estimation method of multi-component sinusoidal signal in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is proposed. The algorithm is implemented in the frequency domain and based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The maximum DFT spectral line and two Discrete-Time Fourier Transform (DTFT) samples located on the same side of the maximum DFT spectral line are used to estimate the frequency of a sinusoidal component. And this algorithm is utilized in both the coarse estimation and the fine estimation. Simulation results show that compared with the competing estimators, the presented method is closer to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). And it is almost independent of the frequency displacement. The numerical complexity of the presented method is similar with the competing DFT-based algorithms.

Total Least Squares Phase Retrieval

We address the phase retrieval problem with errors in the sensing vectors. A number of recent methods for phase retrieval are based on least squares (LS) formulations which assume errors in the quadratic measurements. We extend this approach to handle errors in the sensing vectors by adopting the total least squares (TLS) framework that is used in linear inverse problems with operator errors. We show how gradient descent and the specific geometry of the phase retrieval problem can be used to obtain a simple and efficient TLS solution. Additionally, we derive the gradients of the TLS and LS solutions with respect to the sensing vectors and measurements which enables us to calculate the solution errors. By analyzing these error expressions we determine conditions under which each method should outperform the other. We run simulations to demonstrate that our method can lead to more accurate solutions. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by performing phase retrieval experiments on real optical hardware which naturally contains both sensing vector and measurement errors.

A Review on Acoustic Reconstruction of Temperature Profiles: From Time Measurement to Reconstruction Algorithm

Acoustic tomography is a technique widely used in nonintrusive temperature measurement. The time of flight (TOF) of acoustic waves can be used to estimate the temperatures of a measurement area. After obtaining the TOF of some transmitter-receiver pairs, the temperature profile of the probed area can be estimated by some reconstruction algorithms. Temperature profiles play a critical role in the safe operation and efficient control of thermal-related mechanical systems. This article aims to present a systematic review of the acoustic reconstruction of the temperature profile, including TOF measurements and reconstruction algorithms. First, time-domain, Fourier-domain, and hybrid-domain methods for the TOF measurement are revisited and discussed. Second, algorithms for the solution of the reconstruction model are reviewed from three groups of regularization methods. We also discuss how to choose the regularization parameter and form a good preconditioner for fast calculation. Third, some extensions in TOF measurements and reconstruction methods and potential errors that may affect acoustic reconstruction are also discussed. Finally, some applications are presented. A framework for the whole reconstruction process can be a useful resource to help researchers select a proper method for specific applications.

An Incremental Quantities Distance Protection Using Park's Transformation

In this article, an incremental quantities distance protection using Park's transformation is proposed to increase the operation speed of distance protection. Based on the instantaneous voltage in abc frame approximate linear distribution along the AC transmission lines, this article proves that instantaneous voltage in dq frame still satisfies the approximate linear distribution along the AC transmission line. Then, the d-axis voltage components of fault point and setting point are used to determine the internal and external faults. In order to ensure that the presented distance protection can be applied to all fault types, a virtual three-phase system construction method is also presented. The fault point voltage construction method and low-pass filter design method are also discussed. Finally, a typical AC transmission system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the performance of the proposed distance protection under different fault conditions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed incremental quantities distance protection has fast operation speed under internal metallic fault conditions and high security under external fault conditions.
