This paper is dealing with the implementation of the signal processing algorithms, specifically the Fast Fourier Transform and the matrix multiplication, using the new tool for mapping instructions on functional units of the processor. The tool is using the signal-flow based description of the algorithm instead of the sequential notation of the program execution. The selected target processor is a multi-core digital signal processor based on the very long instruction word architecture. The final assembly code is analyzed in terms of utilization of the functional units and general purpose registers.

Pulmonary diseases represent a large disease burden in terms of morbidity and mortality worldwide. For many reasons, including household air pollution and a shortage of trained doctors, this burden is concentrated in the developing world. The standard diagnostic pathway for pulmonary diseases is prohibitively expensive in developing countries, so these diseases are often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. To assist doctors and health workers, there is a need to create tools that can automatically recognize specific lung sounds and provide diagnostic guidance. As a first step towards this long-term goal, we have created a low-cost stethoscope and smartphone application to record lung sounds. We discuss problems we encountered with the initial design and demonstrate an improved design that is currently being used in the field. We also demonstrate an algorithm capable of automatic detection of wheeze sounds. The automatic wheeze detection algorithm uses time-frequency analysis and the Short Time Fourier Transform to identify sections of wheezing in recorded lung sound files. Unlike most published sound classification studies, we trained and tested our algorithms using sound data collected from 38 actual patients at a pulmonary clinic in Pune, India. Despite variability in the quality of the data, our algorithm demonstrated an accuracy of 86% for successfully detecting the presence of wheeze in a sound file. This mobile platform and detection algorithm demonstrates an important step in creating an automated platform for the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases in a real-world setting.

Distributed algorithms for Array signal processing

Distributed or decentralized estimation of covariance, and distributed principal component analysis have been introduced and studied in the signal processing community in recent years, and applications in array processing have been indicated in some detail. Inspired by these, this paper provides a detailed development of several distributed algorithms for array processing. New distributed algorithms are proposed for DOA estimation methods like root-MUSIC, total least squares-ESPRIT, and FOCUSS. Other contributions include distributed design of the Capon beamformer from data, and distributed implementation of the spatial smoothing method for coherent sources. A distributed implementation of a recently proposed beamspace method called the convolutional beamspace (CBS) is also proposed. The proposed algorithms are fully distributed - an average consensus (AC) is used to avoid the need for a fusion center. The algorithms are based on a recently reported finite-time version of AC which converges to the exact solution in a finite number of iterations. Numerical examples are given throughout the paper to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

In recent years, maritime surveillance of ships using High Frequency Surface Wave Radars (HFSWRs) represents very important challenge, where most attention is focused on algorithms for primary signal processing and the implementation of such algorithms to make them applicable in real-time. This paper contains an overview of the high-resolution primary signal processing in HFSWRs, as well as its implementation using C programming language. All the necessary input data and parameters of the algorithms are described, then the way of executing the program, and finally the output data. A real-time operation is achieved thanks to the implementation based on multithreading by improving the existing implementation of the high-resolution range-Doppler map estimation, which is the most computationally demanding task. As a part of software infrastructure, we have developed a set of auxiliary processing components, allowing end-users graphical presentation of processed radar data. We have demonstrated the capabilities of the ship detection software which can be execute on general purpose computers, and where processing can be performed in real-time or subsequently, for the needs of which an additional program has been developed, thus forming a ship detection software package.

Technological trends alongside with the unprecedented growth of the data generated by devices sparsely distributed, most of them mobile devices, cannot be supported by traditional approaches and processing systems. The requirement for computations at the edge are very stringent in terms of security, bandwidth, computational speed, latency and power consumption. These computations typically require signal processing algorithms running on resource-constrained mobile devices, while to provide the core services and the required computational power, cloud servers are applied. Leveraging services of cloud by mobile devices result in high latency and communication network and mobility-related issues, which can be mitigated by cleverly moving some of these computation to the edge. This special Section is exactly focused on addressing challenges raised by moving computation to the edge in a holistic way, by examining not only challenges related to algorithmic consideration and computational requirements but also circuits and systems and hardware platforms suitable for such implementation. The special Section also considers the trade-offs related to power and energy consumption, bandwidth versus computational complexity and security.

We have analyzed the impact of digital and optical signal processing algorithms, that is, Volterra equalization (VE), digital backpropagation (BP), and optical phase conjugation with nonlinearity module (OPC-NM), in next generation 10 Gbit/s (also referred to as XG) DP-QPSK long haul WDM (fixed-grid) passive optical network (PON) without midspan repeaters over 120 km standard single mode fiber (SMF) link for downstream signals. Due to the compensation of optical Kerr effects, the sensitivity penalty is improved by 2 dB by implementing BP algorithm, 1.5 dB by VE algorithm, and 2.69 dB by OPC-NM. Moreover, with the implementation of NL equalization technique, we are able to get the transmission distance of 126.6 km SMF for the 1 : 1024 split ratio at 5GHz channel spacing in the nonlinear region.

The purpose of the work is to substantiate the possibility traveling wave fault location (TWFL) complex functioning in branched distribution networks of medium voltage class. Traveling waves (TW) are born in the place of fault. The complex registers the time of TW arrival to the ends of the network in a unified satellite time scale. Then the complex calculates the fault location. The main factor complicating the complex's functioning in branched networks of medium voltage class lines is the presence of a large number of concentrated inhomogeneities in the form of nodes with branches. Analytically and with the help of model calculations in PSCAD program, we can obtain TW transmission coefficient through inhomogeneity nodes at different types of faults. The paper shows the experiments' results. A large number of complex's sensors in several ends of the branched network allows us to determine the time TW registration and the speed of their propagation along the lines between paired combinations complex's sensors. Comparison of the registered propagation speed with the speed of light allows us to separate reliable or accurate registrations of the TW beginning from unreliable registrations. It is shown, that the amplitude of the registered TW and the amplitude of stationary and non-stationary noise at the place of registration determine the reliability of the complex operation. The paper compares the results of TW registration generated inside and outside the area controlled by the complex.

This study delves into extracting Photoplethysmography (PPG) signals from images using various neural network architectures. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of different models in capturing PPG values from snapshots of the dataset. Two training approaches were investigated: pretraining the model with only the fully connected part being trained or training the entire network. Results demonstrate that the models trained from scratch outperform their pretrained counterparts. Among the architectures, DenseNet121 shows the most promising results. The findings highlight the potential of utilising neural networks for PPG signal extraction, with applications ranging from surgical planning to personalised medical treatments. This research represents a significant stride in integrating advanced imaging techniques and neural networks in biomedical engineering.

With the rapid advancements in genomics and bioinformatics, gene identification has assumed a pivotal role in contemporary biological research. Gene identification involves pinpointing regions within DNA sequences that encode proteins or functional RNAs, which is of profound significance for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of life, exploring the genetic underpinnings of diseases, and drug development. While traditional experimental biology methods offer reliable tools, they are often time-consuming and costly. Consequently, the application of signal processing techniques for gene identification has emerged as a focal point of current research. signal processing, with its formidable analytical capabilities when dealing with vast amounts of data, is particularly well-suited for high-dimensional and complex data such as DNA sequences. By converting DNA sequences into numerical signals and employing spectral analysis methods like Fourier and wavelet transforms, intrinsic features of gene structures can be unveiled. Moreover, integrating machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) further enhances the accuracy of gene identification. signal processing methods provide robust support for the efficient and automated processing of complex genomic data from both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

Previously published results demonstrated that a sequential combination of adaptive linear prediction configuration (LPC), adaptive noise cancellation (ANC), and adaptive comb filtering (CF) can effectively remove maternal interference from noninvasive fetal ECGs. More recent research results have verified that the bio-inspired Lévy Flight Firefly Algorithm (LFFA) can be effectively applied to many different forms of linear and non-linear adaptive filter structures, including low sensitivity IIR adaptive structures that could not be used with steepest descent adaptive algorithms due to their adaptive multimodal characteristics. This paper presents results when using the LFFA algorithm in various stages of the FECG sequential combination processing.
