Spatial-Frequency-Based Selective Fixed-Filter Algorithm for Multichannel Active Noise Control

The multichannel active noise control (MCANC) approach is widely regarded as an effective solution to achieve a large noise cancellation zone in a complicated acoustic environment. However, the sluggish convergence and massive computation of traditional adaptive multichannel active control algorithms typically impede the MCANC system's practical applications. The recently developed selective fixed-filter method offers a way to decrease the computational load in real-time scenarios and enhance the reaction time. Nevertheless, this method is specifically designed for the single-channel ANC system and only considers the frequency information of the noise. This inevitably impacts the effectiveness of reducing noise from various directions, particularly in the MCANC system. Therefore, we proposed a spatial-frequency-based selective fixed-filter ANC technique that adopts the Bhattacharyya Distance Matching (SFANC-BdM). In our work, the BdM is a one-step spectra and is designed by calculating similarity of different data distribution. According to the most similar case, the corresponding control filter is then selected. By avoiding separately extracting the direction and frequency information, the proposed method significantly increases the algorithm's efficiency. Compared to the conventional SFANC method, it enables a more accurate filter choice and achieves better noise reduction.

A Resource-Efficient Time-Domain-Based Algorithm to Estimate Respiration Rate From Single-Lead ECG signal

This study introduces a novel, computationally efficient time-domain (TD) algorithm for accurate breath rate (BR) estimation from single-lead ECG signals, designed for wearable devices. The proposed algorithm uses statistical TD parameters-mean, prominence, and distance (MPD)-to detect valid respiratory peaks in ECG-derived respiration (EDR) signals. The performance of the MPD algorithm was evaluated using two datasets: 1) a benchmark database containing ECG acquired during dynamic activities and 2) a real-time dataset comprising ECG signals from five subjects performing dynamic activities, including standing, jogging, and recovery. Comparative analysis against state-of-the-art TD methods, such as count-orig, zero-crossing detection, peak detection, and adaptive threshold techniques, demonstrates the superiority of MPD in both accuracy and computational efficiency. On the benchmark dataset, MPD achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.66 bpm and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 23.69%, outperforming the Count-Orig method (MAE = 5.09 bpm, MAPE = 32.76%). For real-time data, MPD further demonstrated robust performance with an MAE of 1.53 bpm and MAPE of 7.25%. The algorithm's design simplicity, combined with its ability to handle spurious peaks and varying signal conditions, makes it particularly suitable for resource-constrained wearable applications. Its high accuracy, low computational demands, and adaptability across activity conditions underscore its potential for continuous, real-time respiratory monitoring in diverse scenarios.

Mixed Grover: A Hybrid Version to Improve Grover's Algorithm for Unstructured Database Search

In this article, we propose a new strategy to exploit Grover's algorithm for unstructured search problems. We first show that running Grover's routine with a reduced number of iterations but allowing several trials presents a complexity advantage while keeping the same success probability. Then, by a theoretical analysis of the performance, we provide a generic procedure to parameterize the number of iterations k within one shot of Grover's algorithm and the maximum number of trials T, given a targeted success pand the size of the database N. At the end, we highlight that this new approach permits to reduce the computational time by at least 10% for p >= 0.999 independently of the size of the database.

Grating Lobe/Sidelobe Suppression Method for Near-Field Distributed MIMO Imaging Array

Distributed multiple-input-multiple-output(MIMO)arrays obtain a larger virtual aperture by combining subarrays at different locations. However, subarray spacing leads to sparse spatial sampling, introducing grating lobes in the imaging results. In this article, we propose a grating lobe suppression method utilizing array pattern migration and multiapodization (MA) for large-aperture distributed MIMO imaging arrays under near-field conditions. The MA processing includes applying multiple sets of compensation weights to achieve pattern migration of the imaging result and selecting the minimum value as the output. For further image quality improvement, we derive sum and difference images of the imaging results from sum and difference patterns of the array factor, and then propose a novel sidelobe suppression method utilizing weighted sum and difference (WSD) image cancellation. On this basis, we combine the two proposed methods with the backprojection (BP) algorithm through adaptive weighting techniques to eliminate the spatially variant characteristics of the array pattern in the near-field range, introducing a weighted BP (WBP) algorithm for near-field imaging. The effectiveness of the proposed methods has been verified through multiple simulations, measurements, and a publicly available dataset.

ICASSP 2024 Speech signal Improvement Challenge

The ICASSP 2024 Speech signal Improvement Challenge aims to advance research in enhancing speech signal quality within communication systems. The speech signal quality can be assessed using the SIG metric from ITU-T P.835 and still remains a top issue in audio communication and conferencing systems. For example, in the ICASSP 2023 Deep Noise Suppression Challenge, the improvement in the background and overall quality is impressive, while the speech signal enhancement was not statistically significant. To improve the speech signal the following speech impairment areas must be addressed: coloration, discontinuity, loudness, reverberation, and noise. To this end, we organized ICASSP 2024 Speech signal Improvement Challenge, which marks the second signal-focused challenge, built upon the success of the previous ICASSP 2023 Speech signal Improvement Challenge. A training and test set was provided for the challenge, and the winners were determined using an extended crowdsourced implementation of ITU-T P.804's listening phase and the word accuracy (WAcc) rate. The results show that significant improvement was made across all measured dimensions of speech quality.

An Enhanced Augmented Coprime Array with Low Mutual Coupling and High DOFs

Coprime array (CA) has gained significant attention due to its high degrees of freedom (DOFs) and large array aperture. Previous researches have focused on improving coprime arrays, but few studies have successfully combined a large array aperture, low mutual coupling, and high DOFs with the number of array elements. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-symmetrical augmented coprime array (SSACA) that strategically positions sensors by arranging M-subarrays and symmetric N-subarrays. This design reduces redundancy lags, and increases DOFs, continuous DOFs, and array aperture, thereby mitigating mutual coupling effects and improving angular resolution for the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. We derive closed-form expressions for the DOFs, continuous DOFs, and array aperture of SSACA. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SSACA outperforms the existing studies regarding higher DOFs, reduced mutual coupling effects, and lower root mean square error (RMSE) in similar application scenarios, particularly in strong mutual coupling scenarios. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

HRRP Synthesis and Imaging of Frequency Agile Waveform With Multidimensional Nonideal Factor Errors for High-Speed Targets

Acquiring high-resolution range profile (HRRP) image of noncooperative targets holds substantial significance in the field of radar automatic target recognition due to its higher range resolution and richer target information compared with narrowband signal. To overcome the high hardware requirements for signal generation and reception in transmission of wideband signals, the utilization of step-frequency agile waveform (FAW) is a favorable choice for HRRP synthesis. The high-speed motion of noncooperative targets and the instability of radar systems will lead to multidimensional nonideal factor errors such as motion errors, carrier frequency offset (CFO), and time-varying amplitude (TVA) in radar echoes, resulting in poor quality of HRRP images with traditional HRRP synthesis methods. To address the above problems, this article proposes an HRRP synthesis method of FAW with multidimensional nonideal factor errors for high-speed targets. In this technique, a fine-grained signal model with multidimensional errors is established, enabling the acquisition of high-precision HRRP through parameter estimation and compensation. Based on this, a joint optimization algorithm of sparrow search algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm (SSA-SAA) is proposed to solve the optimal parameter search. Moreover, a multicriterion fusion cost function is designed to enhance the robustness of parameter search compared with the single-criterion cost function. High-precision HRRP synthesis of FAW for high-speed targets is achieved by effectively eliminating the errors caused by nonideal factors. Furthermore, high-precision inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) based on long-term observation of HRRP sequences is generated. Extensive experimental results based on both simulated and real data are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Exploring Dynamic Duty Cycling for Energy Efficiency in Coherent DSP ASIC

In coherent optics transmission systems, the digital signal processor (DSP) application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is the most power-hungry part of the optical transceiver. Already in the edge of transistor technology, to achieve the power budget, we must look for opportunities to further optimize the designs. This letter explores a dynamic duty cycle for reducing the consumption in the pipeline of such DSP ASICs. We exploit the characteristics of estimator algorithms to introduce a dynamic duty cycle, reducing the mean consumption of designs originally constrained only for worst-case scenarios. We present the methodology to implement duty cycle control using the carrier frequency offset estimator (CFE) algorithm as case study, achieving in simulation level from 22% to 74% power consumption reduction in this algorithm, varying on-chip operation conditions.

Population Monte Carlo With Normalizing Flow

Adaptive importance sampling (AIS) methods provide a useful alternative to Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for performing inference of intractable distributions. Population Monte Carlo (PMC) algorithms constitute a family of AIS approaches which adapt the proposal distributions iteratively to improve the approximation of the target distribution. Recent work in this area primarily focuses on ameliorating the proposal adaptation procedure for high-dimensional applications. However, most of the AIS algorithms use simple proposal distributions for sampling, which might be inadequate in exploring target distributions with intricate geometries. In this work, we construct expressive proposal distributions in the AIS framework using normalizing flow, an appealing approach for modeling complex distributions. We use an iterative parameter update rule to enhance the approximation of the target distribution. Numerical experiments show that in high-dimensional settings, the proposed algorithm offers significantly improved performance compared to the existing techniques.

A Novel Two-Way Pattern Synthesis Method With the Uniform and Thinned Arrays

In this letter, a novel two-way product pattern synthesis method utilizing a uniform transmit array and a thinned receive array is proposed. Specifically, the thinned receive array is an extended coprime array (ECA). Based on the ECA's characteristics, the ECA's array factor is decomposed into the product of the slow-varying array factor and the fast-varying array factor. Subsequently, the positions of nulls and the first sidelobe of the ECA are derived, respectively. It reveals that the fast-varying array factor plays a dominant role in the positions of nulls and the first sidelobe. The ECA architecture is optimized for element number and element spacing using the combinatorial traversal algorithm. It enables the alignment of nulls and the first sidelobe between the uniform array and the ECA. Compared to the traditional uniform transmit-receive method with the same number of elements, a two-way product pattern with a lower peak sidelobe level, a larger aperture, a narrower beamwidth, and a higher resolution can be achieved by the proposed method. The efficiency of the proposed method has been validated by typical simulation results.
