Implementation of the computer tomography parallel algorithms with the incomplete set of data

Computer tomography has a wide field of applicability;however, most of its applications assume that the data, obtained from the scans of the examined object, satisfy the expectations regarding their amount and quality. Unfortunately, sometimes such expected data cannot be achieved. Then we deal with the incomplete set of data. In the paper we consider an unusual case of such situation, which may occur when the access to the examined object is difficult. The previous research, conducted by the author, showed that the CT algorithms can be used successfully in this case as well, but the time of reconstruction is problematic. One of possibilities to reduce the time of reconstruction consists in executing the parallel calculations. In the analyzed approach the system of linear equations is divided into blocks, such that each block is operated by a different thread. Such investigations were performed only theoretically till now. In the current paper the usefulness of the parallel-block approach, proposed by the author, is examined. The conducted research has shown that also for an incomplete data set in the analyzed algorithm it is possible to select optimal values of the reconstruction parameters. We can also obtain (for a given number of pixels) a reconstruction with a given maximum error. The paper indicates the differences between the classical and the examined problem of CT. The obtained results confirm that the real implementation of the parallel algorithm is also convergent, which means it is useful.

Understanding the behaviour of sensors, and in particular, the specifications of multisensor systems, are complex problems. The variables that need to be taken into consideration include, inter alia, the application domain, the way sensors are used, and their architectures. Various models, algorithms, and technologies have been designed to achieve this goal. In this paper, a new interval logic, referred to as Duration Calculus for Functions (DC4F), is applied to precisely specify signals originating from sensors, in particular sensors and devices used in heart rhythm monitoring procedures, such as electrocardiograms. Precision is the key issue in case of safety critical system specification. DC4F is a natural extension of the well-known Duration Calculus, an interval temporal logic used for specifying the duration of a process. It is suitable for describing complex, interval-dependent behaviours. Said approach allows one to specify temporal series, describe complex interval-dependent behaviours, and evaluate the corresponding data within a unifying logical framework. The use of DC4F allows one, on the one hand, to precisely specify the behaviour of functions modelling signals generated by different sensors and devices. Such specifications can be used for classifying signals, functions, and diagrams;and for identifying normal and abnormal behaviours. On the other hand, it allows one to formulate and frame a hypothesis. This is a significant advantage over machine learning algorithms, since the latter are capable of learning different patterns but fail to allow the user to specify the behaviour of interest.

An Interval Temporal Logic for Time Series Specification and data Integration

The analysis of temporal series-in particular, analysis of multisensor data-is a complex problem. It depends on the application domain, the way the data have to be used, and sensors available, among other factors. Various models, algorithms, and technologies have been designed for this goal. Temporal logics are used to describe temporal properties of systems. The properties may specify the occurrence and the order of events in time, recurring patterns, complex behaviors, and processes. In this paper, a new interval logic, called duration calculus for functions (DC4F), is proposed for the specification of temporal series corresponding to multisensor data. DC4F is a natural extension of the well-known duration calculus, an interval temporal logic for the specification of process duration. The adequacy of the proposed logic is analyzed in the case of multisensor data concerning volcanic eruption monitoring. It turns out that the relevant behavior concerns time intervals, not only accumulated history as it is described in other kinds of temporal logics. The examples analyzed demonstrate that a description language is required to specify time series of various kind relative to time intervals. The duration calculus cannot be successfully applied for this task. The proposed calculus allows one to specify temporal series and complex interval-dependent behaviors, and to evaluate the corresponding data within a unifying logical framework. It allows to formulate hypotheses concerning volcano eruption phenomena. However, the expressivity of DC4F comes at the cost of its decidability.

The problem of seafloor characterisation is important in the context of management as well as investigation and protection of the marine environment. In the first part of the paper, a review of underwater acoustic technology and methodology used in seafloor characterisation is presented. It consists of the techniques based on the use of singlebeam echosounders and seismic sources, along with those developed for the use of sidescan and multibeam sonar systems. In the second part, the review is followed by a description of the combined approach to seafloor characterisation developed by the authors. It is based on extraction of three types of information from multibeam sonar recordings, namely: 1) the sonar image of seabed surface, 2) the point cloud describing seabed surface shape, 3) the set of echo envelopes corresponding to particular sonar beams. Then the seafloor classification is performed using the set of parameters (descriptors) which are calculated on the basis of 3 types of sonar data mentioned above. The proposed approach has been tested using field sonar data recordings in the water region of the Southern Baltic Sea. In this region, four sites differing by seabed type were investigated.

The need for external validation in machine olfaction: emphasis on health-related applications

Over the last two decades, electronic nose research has produced thousands of research works. Many of them were describing the ability of the e-nose technology to solve diverse applications in domains ranging from food technology to safety, security, or health. It is, in fact, in the biomedical field where e-nose technology is finding a research niche in the last years. Although few success stories exist, most described applications never found the road to industrial or clinical exploitation. Most described methodologies were not reliable and were plagued by numerous problems that prevented practical application beyond the lab. This work emphasizes the need of external validation in machine olfaction. I describe some statistical and methodological pitfalls of the e-nose practice and I give some best practice recommendations for researchers in the field.

The paper deals with the force and torque sensorial subsystem based on the mechanical structure enabling load resolution into six axial forces. Design and construction of mechanical parts of the transducer structure, capacitive sensors of the tensile and compressive axial forces, and problems of signal and data processing were investigated. The attention was also paid to calibrating and testing procedures.
