PET imaging scanners based on all-digital architecture offer greater data processing flexibility and the possibility to recalibrate the system with simple software procedures. The LabPET scanner, designed at the Universite de Sherbrooke, is one such device. It is built around dual LYSO/LGSO scintillators in a phoswich arrangement coupled to Avalanche Photodiodes (APD) and combined with highly parallel readout and processing electronics. This approach enables the implementation of advanced real time digital signal processing methods to compute energy resolution, crystal identification and the arrival time of events. Timing extraction represents the highest challenge because of the low sampling frequency (45 MHz), the quantization error and the presence of a Zero Order Hold (ZOH) in the system. The aim of this paper is to present a method to increase coincidence time accuracy by adequately addressing each of these limitations. The proposed method uses a deconvolution concept based on adaptive filter theory preceded by Cubic Spline interpolation to improve digital timing performance. The method achieves 4.5 ns, 8.2 ns, and 6.5 ns timing resolution with LYSO-LYSO, LGSO-LGSO and mixed crystals phoswich coincidences, respectively.

A generalized product-type BiCOR method and its application in signal deconvolution

For solving nonsymmetric linear systems, we attempt to establish symmetric structures in nonsymmetric systems and handle them through the methods devised for symmetric cases. A Biconjugate A-Orthogonal Residual method based on Biconjugate A-Orthonormalization Procedure has been proposed and nominated as BiCOR in [Y.-F. Jing, T.-Z. Huang, Y. Zhang, L. Li, G.-H. Cheng, Z.-G. Ren, Y. Duan, T. Sogabe, B. Carpentieri, Lanczos-type variants of the COCR method for complex nonsymmetric linear systems, J. Comput. Phys. 228 (2009) 6376-6394]. As many similar characteristics exist between BiCOR and BiCG, the strategies of improved variants of BiCG, such as CGS and BiCGSTAB, can be utilized to enhance the algorithm for BiCOR. Making use of the product of residual polynomials of BiCOR and other polynomials, CURS and BiCORSTAB have been proposed along the same ideas of CGS and BiCGSTAB, respectively in the above-mentioned paper. In this paper, a unified generalized framework of product-type BiCOR, which is epitomized by the product of residual polynomials and other polynomials, is proposed. Numerical examples are selected from the blurring signal cases and the effect of the generalized product-type BiCOR method is prominent in signal deconvolution. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Fast and Stable signal deconvolution via Compressible State-Space Models

Objective: Common biological measurements are in the form of noisy convolutions of signals of interest with possibly unknown and transient blurring kernels. Examples include EEG and calcium imaging data. Thus, signal deconvolution of these measurements is crucial in understanding the underlying biological processes. The objective of this paper is to develop fast and stable solutions for signal deconvolution from noisy, blurred, and undersampled data, where the signals are in the form of discrete events distributed in time and space. Methods: We introduce compressible state-space models as a framework to model and estimate such discrete events. These state-space models admit abrupt changes in the states and have a convergent transition matrix, and are coupled with compressive linear measurements. We consider a dynamic compressive sensing optimization problem and develop a fast solution, using two nested expectation maximization algorithms, to jointly estimate the states as well as their transition matrices. Under suitable sparsity assumptions on the dynamics, we prove optimal stability guarantees for the recovery of the states and present a method for the identification of the underlying discrete events with precise confidence bounds. Results: We present simulation studies as well as application to calcium deconvolution and sleep spindle detection, which verify our theoretical results and show significant improvement over existing techniques. Conclusion: Our results show that by explicitly modeling the dynamics of the underlying signals, it is possible to construct signal deconvolution solutions that are scalable, statistically robust, and achieve high temporal resolution. Significance: Our proposed methodology provides a framework for modeling and deconvolution of noisy, blurred, and undersampled measurements in a fast and stable fashion, with potential application to a wide range of biological data.

In this paper, we consider linear state-space models with compressible innovations and convergent transition matrices in order to model spatiotemporally sparse transient events. We perform parameter and state estimation using a dynamic compressed sensing framework and develop an efficient solution consisting of two nested Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithms. Under suitable sparsity assumptions on the innovations, we prove recovery guarantees and derive confidence bounds for the state estimates. We provide simulation studies as well as application to spike deconvolution from calcium imaging data which verify our theoretical results and show significant improvement over existing algorithms.

The dynamic interaction between a civil infrastructure and the soil beneath is crucial for seismic risk assessment. Due to the increased computational capacity, more frequently, this problem is starting to be addressed by 3D modelling based on the finite element method (FEM). However, because of the interaction between the stresses and strains in the orthogonal directions of the soil volume, i.e. the Poisson effect, it is not trivial to achieve specific spectral ordinates at the surface of the FEM model, after propagation from the bedrock. This study introduces a novel method aimed at obtaining surface-level ground motions with specific spectral intensities by using 3D FEM models. This method integrates spectral matching, filters, deconvolution using 1D models, and frequency modulation techniques, to address misalignments between the outcomes of 1D and 3D models, particularly focusing on high-frequency spectral amplification in soil response. It has been tested by analysing two seismic scenarios, which have been characterized from a probabilistic perspective. The proposed approach ensures the development of ground motion records accurately producing specific spectral intensities at the surface, enhancing seismic risk assessments and structural analysis. The study emphasizes the importance of accurate seismic hazard characterization, providing valuable insights for earthquake engineering practices.

This paper represents a farther development of the theoretical basis for the interpretation of transient data obtained by scanning laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to overcome the non-linear distortion of the transient signal as well as to improve spatial resolution. The reconstruction of the relative concentration profile from transient data is suggested in terms of simple models of analytical information gathering for extreme cases of depth distribution of the analyte. The main attention is focused on the geometry of the overlap between the laser spot and the concentration profile, the consideration of which allows defining explicitly the response function necessary for the deconvolution procedure. The profile of the transient signal simulated according the proposed model for a real system (copper conductor lines in polymer matrix) is in good agreement with the measured data. The feasibility of the deconvolution procedure to reconstruct the relative concentration profile for a model system is demonstrated. The suggested analytical framework is intended to overcome certain limitations of scanning LA-ICP-MS which are caused by the measuring process independently from the optimization of hardware and experimental conditions. Invariant embedding technique for medium permittivity profile reconstruction using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

Reconstructing the dielectric permittivity profile (depth dependence of sample dielectric permittivity) is an important inverse problem. We present a new method for permittivity profile reconstruction based on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy signal processing. Reconstruction is accomplished in two steps. First, the sample pulse function is reconstructed using sample time-domain reflection data. Low-and high-frequency noise filtering and the interpolation of the pulse function at low frequencies are then applied. Second, an invariant embedding technique is used to calculate the dielectric permittivity profile based on the sample pulse function. Samples with known permittivity profiles have been studied experimentally using this procedure in order to verify this algorithm. This algorithm is stable to additive Gaussian white noise as shown using mathematical modeling based on the finite-difference time-domain technique. Potential and Limitations of a deconvolution Approach for Guided Wave Structural Health Monitoring

Ultrasonic guided waves offer the possibility of inspecting large areas of structures from a small number of sensor positions. However, inspection of complex structures is difficult as the reflections from different features overlap. Estimating the number and amplitude of the wave packets in ultrasonic time traces is crucial for the development of a guided wave inspection system, in order to detect and locate damage. deconvolution has been extensively used in geophysical applications to resolve overlapping echoes in the recorded signals. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the applicability of the deconvolution approach for enhancing the resolution of ultrasonic time traces in structural health monitoring (SHM). Numerical simulations on strongly overlapping signals were carried out to evaluate the performance of the two techniques that have been considered: (i) Wiener filter, (ii) single most likely replacement. It was shown that the relatively narrow bandwidth of the input signals and phase shifts between different reflections limit the benefits obtained from deconvolution and it was concluded that deconvolution is unlikely to be useful for guided wave SHM applications.

The purpose of signal restoration is to acquire a clean signal from the degraded signal which contains blur and noise. In this paper, a modified Tikhonov regularization method based on the standard Tikhonov regularization matrix is proposed, and the corresponding preconditioner is designed to accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. The proposed method shows the best performance than several competitive methods. In addition, the convergence speed is improved significantly.
