A reliable prediction of the global phase stability for liquid-liquid equilibrium through the simulated annealing algorithm: Application to NRTL and UNIQUAC equations

The simulated annealing algorithm is introduced to search the global optimal solutions for the multipeak phenomena which generally exist in the phase stability problems with continuous variables. The Gibbs free energy criterion was modeled by the NRTL and UNIQUAC activity coefficient equations. When previous approaches fail, it is usually because they locate local minima due to the nonconvex and nonlinear natures of the models used to predict phase equilibrium. In this paper, the preliminary results show that the global minimum of the tangent plane distance function (TPDF) can be obtained by using the simulated annealing algorithm. The effects of the initial and the final values of the control parameter, the decrement of the control parameter and the length of the Markov chains are analyzed. The optimal 'cooling schedule' was obtained according to the calculation results of the phase stability problems for one ternary mixture. The liquid-liquid equilibrium compositions were calculated by the Newton-Raphson method on the basis of the global minimum of TPDF. The results of four examples show that the simulated annealing algorithm can effectively solve the global phase stability problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Optimizing pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam welding process parameters to attain maximum ultimate tensile strength for thin AISI316L sheet using response surface methodology and simulated annealing algorithm

Pulsed laser welding is a powerful technique especially suitable for joining thin sheet metals. In this study, based on experimental data, pulsed laser welding of thin AISI316L austenitic stainless steel sheet has been modeled and optimized. The experimental data required for modeling are gathered as per Central Composite Design matrix in Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with full replication of 31 runs. Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) is considered as the main quality measure in laser welding. Furthermore, the important process parameters including peak power, pulse duration, pulse frequency and welding speed are selected as input process parameters. The relation between input parameters and the output response is established via full quadratic response surface regression with confidence level of 95%. The adequacy of the regression model was verified using Analysis of Variance technique results. The main effects of each factor and the interactions effects with other factors were analyzed graphically in contour and surface plot. Next, to maximum joint UTS, the best combinations of parameters levels were specified using RSM. Moreover, the mathematical model is implanted into a simulated annealing (SA) optimization algorithm to determine the optimal values of process parameters. The results obtained by both SA and RSM optimization techniques are in good agreement. The optimal parameters settings for peak power of 1800 W, pulse duration of 4.5 ms, frequency of 4.2 Hz and welding speed of 0.5 mm/s would result in a welded joint with 96% of the base metal UTS. Computational results clearly demonstrate that the proposed modeling and optimization procedures perform quite well for pulsed laser welding process. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Automatic optimal design of field plate for silicon on insulator lateral double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor using simulated annealing algorithm

Field plate (FP) technology has been widely used due to its simple structure and process compatibility. Through introducing the interface charge to suppress the electric field peak at the junction region, the breakdown performance can be improved. However, designing an appropriate FP for semiconductor power devices is challenging and time-consuming. In this paper, the authors propose a fully automated FP optimal design method based on simulated annealing algorithm (SA) for silicon on insulator lateral double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor. By using an automatic iterative process to obtain the minimum value of the objective function, the parameters related to the FP can be effectively provided. Numerical results show that when the breakdown occurs at the N+N or PN junction, the breakdown voltage can be optimized by an average of 18.6% and 45.5%, respectively. Moreover, compared with the existing methods, the proposed approach is highly efficient with a runtime that does not exceed 12 s. The authors believe that this method can greatly accelerate the power device design process. In this paper, an automatic optimal design method for field plate (FP) in silicon on insulator lateral double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor using simulated annealing algorithm is proposed. For a given device structure, the framework can automatically design the FP geometry parameters within the definite range that maximizes the device breakdown voltage without human intervention. Meanwhile, the optimization process can be finished in a few seconds. image

Aerogel infused fibrous blankets have been regarded as one the most promising superinsulation materials for application of thermal subsystems with severe limitations in weight, volume, and thermal insulation efficiency in space missions. Aiming at accurate description of radiation transport within such multiscale, multicomponent composites with absorbing, emitting, and anisotropic scattering features, this research is interested in experimental characterization of complete series of spectral radiative parameters on basis of theoretical solution and optical measurements for the composites. To overcome the convergence difficulty in ill-posed problem, simulated annealing algorithm was employed for inverse identification of multiple radiative parameters of the aerogel-based samples. A new phase function with two Henyey-Greenstein (HG) and Rayleigh scattering functions was proposed to describe the radiation scattering distribution inside the composites. It was found that the developed method successfully achieved high precision measurements of radiative parameters of anisotropic scattering medium. The proposed phase function gives more exact expression of angular distribution behavior of scattering occurring inside the multiscale composites, in comparison with the commonly-used phase functions. The information collected from sensitivity analysis of Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) and Bidirectional Transmittance Distribution Function (BTDF) facilitated highly accurate and more efficient identification and optimization of experimental tests in measurements of complete radiative parameters of aerogel infused fibrous blankets for space applications.

A hybrid nested partitions and simulated annealing algorithm for dynamic facility layout problem: a robust optimization approach

The dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP) deals with the arrangement of facilities/departments in a factory for different periods so that the location of the facilities can be changed from one period to another one. Traditionally, this problem is formulated to minimize the sum of material handling and rearrangement costs in the planning horizon by assuming that all parameters are deterministic. In this paper, we assume that the material flow between departments and rearrangement costs are uncertain and, accordingly, develop the robust counterpart (RC) of the DFLP model. The model is computationally intractable;therefore, we propose a hybrid algorithm based on nested partitions (NP) and simulated annealing (SA) algorithms, namely NP-SA. Moreover, we develop a heuristic algorithm to compute the values of the additional variables used in the RC model. The numerical results indicate that the NP-SA algorithm is very effective in giving a good solution in a short time. Furthermore, a simulation study demonstrates that, on average, robust solutions are better than nominal solutions.

A new numerical procedure, based on the simulated annealing algorithm (SA), for optimizing the parameters of a new recently developed gamma-type adsorption isotherm equation is proposed. This procedure is verified for three modeled adsorption isotherms assuming some arbitrarily chosen shapes of the pore size distribution function (asymmetrical bell-shaped functions possessing one or two points of inflection and decreasing to a zero-hyperbolic-like function). To study the properties of the presented algorithm, several different models of temperature decrease were tested. It is shown that the best results are obtained for the models of temperature decreasing rapidly. Additionally, the SA algorithm provides (in a very short time) values of the optimization parameters that are very close to the global minimum of the fitness function. From the practical point of view, the obtained results are satisfactory and the proposed method can be successfully applied to determining the parameters of the microporous structure of activated carbons. Cryptographic algorithms are used to ensure confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of data in information systems. One of the important areas of modern cryptography is that of symmetric key ciphers. They convert the input plaintext into ciphertext, representing it as a random sequence of characters. S-boxes are designed to complicate the input-output relationship of the cipher. In other words, S-boxes introduce nonlinearity into the encryption process, complicating the use of different methods of cryptanalysis (linear, differential, statistical, correlation, etc.). In addition, S-boxes must be random. This property means that nonlinear substitution cannot be represented as simple algebraic constructions. Random S-boxes are designed to protect against algebraic methods of cryptanalysis. Thus, generation of random S-boxes is an important area of research directly related to the design of modern cryptographically strong symmetric ciphers. This problem has been solved in many related works, including some using the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Some works managed to generate 8-bit bijective S-boxes with a nonlinearity index of 104. However, this required enormous computational resources. This paper presents the results of our optimization of SA via various parameters. We were able to significantly reduce the computational complexity of substitution generation with SA. In addition, we also significantly increased the probability of generating the target S-boxes with a nonlinearity score of 104.

In this paper we present the programmable logic array (PLA) topological optimization problem using folding techniques. First of all, we consider a multiple unconstrained column folding and solve this problem using the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Afterwards we extend this algorithm in order to solve several types of constrained folding problem. In this way, simple folding is considered as a special case of multiple constrained folding. Bipartite graphs are used to solve the multiple constrained folding problem. Finally, we give some experimental results found by executing the algorithm.

Software reliability prediction based on support vector regression using a hybrid genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm

Software reliability prediction is very important for minimising cost and improving the effectiveness of the software development process. As an important method, relative data during software lifecycle is used to analyse and predict software reliability. However, predicting the variability of software reliability with time is very difficult. Recently, support vector regression (SVR) has been widely applied to solve non-linear predicting problems in many fields such as software reliability prediction and has obtained well performance in many situations, and it is still difficult to select its parameters. Previously, intelligence optimisation algorithms, such as genetic algorithm (GA), are mostly used for finding better parameters of SVR, however existing methods of selecting parameters require usually has some disadvantages. In this study, to overcome weaknesses of GA, such as the local minima and the premature convergence problems, GA and simulated annealing (SA) are integrated into a new optimise algorithm, called GA-SA, it is then applied to SVR for predicting software reliability. The authors compare proposed GA-SA-SVR model with other software reliability models through real software failure data. The experimental results show that the proposed GA-SA-SVR model can obtain better predictions results than the other models and has a fairly accurate prediction capability.
