Machined surface topography is very critical since it affects directly the surface quality, especially the surface roughness. Based on the trajectory equations of the cutting edge relative to the workpiece, a new method is developed for the prediction of the machined surface topography. This method has the advantage of simplicity and it is a mesh-independent direct computing method over the traditional interpolation scheme. The topography value of any point on the machined surface can be calculated directly and the spindle runout can be taken into account. The validity of the method is demonstrated by several simulation examples of end and ball-end milling processes.

This paper studies an agent-based model of consumer demand. Agents are heterogeneous with respect to their preferences and incomes. There are two basic ingredients in the model. The first ingredient is a metric that captures the degree of heterogeneity between agents. The second ingredient is a serial computer algorithm that is used in order to compute a terminal consumption bundle at which income is exhausted and overall utility is maximized. Agents are clustered into heterogeneous groups based on their preferences and incomes. We extract information about the evolution of consumer expenditure under different price regimes and the buildup of optimal demand for varying levels of income and preference parameter values. These features cannot be obtained in the classical framework of static utility maximization. Our agent-based data-driven methodology can be applied to any relevant data set and so provide a reliable model for forecasting demand given some agent characteristics.

We study the problem of computing the reachable principals of the simulation preorder and the reachable blocks of simulation equivalence. Following a theoretical investigation of this problem, which highlights a sharp contrast with the already settled case of bisimulation, we design algorithms to solve this problem by leveraging the idea of interleaving reachability and simulation computation while possibly avoiding the computation of all the reachable states or the whole simulation preorder. In particular, we put forward a symbolic algorithm processing state partitions and, in turn, relations between their blocks, which is suited for processing infinite-state systems.

The brain mechanism of selective attention plays a key role in determining the success of a human's interaction with a device. If the user has to perform concurrent tasks by interacting simultaneously with more than one device, her/his attention is directed at one of the devices at a time. Attention can therefore be seen as a shared resource, and the attentional mechanisms play the role of a task scheduler. In this paper we propose an algorithm for simulating the human selective attention. simulations can then be used to study situations in which a user has to interact simultaneously with multiple devices. This kind of study is particularly important in safety-critical contexts in which failures in the main task, such as driving a car or setting an infusion pump, may have serious consequences.

The first results of multiple scattering simulations of polarized high-energy X-rays for Compton experiments using a new Monte Carlo program, MUSCAT, are presented. The program is developed to follow the restrictions of real experimental geometries. The new simulation algorithm uses not only well known photon splitting and interaction forcing methods but it is also upgraded with the new propagation separation method and highly vectorized. In this paper, a detailed description of the new simulation algorithm is given. The code is verified by comparison with the previous experimental and simulation results by the ESRF group and new restricted geometry experiments carried out at SPring-8.

Most modeling and simulation approaches applied in cell biology assume a homogeneous distribution of particles in space, although experimental studies reveal the importance of space to understand the dynamics of cells. There are already numerous spatial approaches focusing on the simulation of cells. Recently, they have been complemented by a set of spatial modeling languages whose operational semantics are tied partly to existing simulation algorithms. These modeling languages allow an explicit description of spatial phenomena, and facilitate analysis of the temporal spatial dynamics of cells by a clear separation between model, semantics, and simulator. With the supported level of abstraction, each of those offers a different perception of the spatial phenomena under study. In this paper, we give an overview of existing modeling formalisms and discuss some ways of combining approaches to tackle the problem the computational costs induced by spatial dynamics.

Odia is the primarily spoken language of Odisha and the sixth classical language of India. There are more than 33 million people of Odisha speak Odia in their day to day life. However, standard input methods for typing Odia are not very widespread among Odia users This paper proposes a simulation algorithm based on Keystroke-Level Model, for predicting one aspect of user performance of our previously proposed Odia keyboard "Baishakhi". The time it takes an user to perform a given task on a given computer system is simulated by this algorithm. The design and development of BAISHAKHI Odia keyboards that can be used to type Unicode enabled Odia texts in a standard text editor using any QWERTY keyboard. We have evaluated the performance of our proposed layout with the existing Odia keyboard layouts using this simulation algorithm. Our primary evaluation shows a significant improvement in reducing time irrespective of keystrokes.

Automatic design of electronic logic circuits has become a new research focus with the cooperation of FPGA technology and intelligent algorithms in recent twenty years. However, as the size of logic circuits became larger and more complex, it has become difficult for the automatic design method to obtain valid and optimized circuits. Based on a divide-and-conquer approach, a two-layer encoding scheme was devised for design of electronic logic circuits. In the process of evolvement, each layer was evolved parallel and they contacted each other at the same time. Moreover, in order to simulate and evaluate evolved electronic logic circuits, a two-step simulation algorithm was proposed to reduce pp computation complexity of simulating circuits and to improve the simulation efficiency. At last, a random number generator was automatically designed with this encoding scheme and the proposed simulation algorithm, and the result showed this method was efficient.

This work is to study the dynamic characteristics of an oil turbine (OT) in the lubricating system of large-scale steam turbines. The configuration and the functions of OT are introduced. The mathematical models are accordingly explored. In addition, the experiment results are predicted and compared with the theoretical prediction. Finally, the dynamic characteristics in the start-up procedure are simulated and analyzed. The agreement between the numerical results and the experiment observations is in general satisfactory. It shows that the numerical simulation approach is reliable, and could be applied into the dynamic characteristics research and optimization of other complicated fluid systems as hydropower station.
