Millimeter-Wave slotted waveguide array With Unequal Beamwidths and Low Sidelobe Levels for Vehicle Radars and Communications

A low profile, high gain 32 x 64-slot array antenna with unequal beamwidths in the E- and H-planes and low sidelobes is proposed for vehicular applications in the 71-81 GHz band. The antenna is composed of 512 (16 x 32) 2 x 2-slot subarrays arranged with equal spacing and excited by a nonuniform corporate-feed-network. A two dimensional amplitude-tapering (complying with Taylor distribution) is used to achieve the low sidelobe levels (SLLs). Combined with the different dimensions of the array, the sidelobes and the beamwidths in the E- and H-planes are independently controlled. A prototype slotted waveguide array is fabricated to verify the array properties. Measurements show that the matching of the array is better than -14 dB over the entire bandwidth. The first SLL is lower than -18.9 dB/-24 dB with the maximum 3-dB beamwidth of 2.3 degrees/1.3 degrees in the E-/H-plane, respectively. The peak gain of over 39.4 dBi and the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) of below -36.2 dB are also achieved. The demonstrated features of high gain, low SLL, and independent controllability of the beam in the E- and H-planes are most desirable for vehicular communications and radars.

A Compact slotted waveguide array Antenna With a Cubic Post Radiator for Aerial Vehicle Applications

This study presents a compact high-gain antenna, designed to be mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles, for millimeter-wave band applications. This antenna combines a slotted waveguide array (SWA) with a cubic post radiator (CPR) for performance enhancement. By utilizing the CPR structure, the radiation of the SWA antenna can be effectively focused in a particular direction, resulting in improved gain, suppressed sidelobes, and enhanced aperture efficiency. The antenna design incorporates a $10\times 10$ array with optimized parameters, along with a centralized double-layer feeding scheme that employs reflection-canceling steps. This feeding scheme improves the impedance bandwidth of the series feed. Consequently, the array antenna operates within an impedance bandwidth of 1.3 GHz, spanning from 26.5 to 27.8 GHz. The fabricated prototype exhibits a peak realized gain of 29.1 dBi and a sidelobe level of -14.6 dB at 26.9 GHz, with a gain variation within 2 dB across the entire operating band. Moreover, it achieves a maximum total efficiency of 95% and maximum aperture efficiency of 85%. In addition, the prototype antenna was tested on a drone, establishing a reliable wireless link between the airborne vehicle and ground station.

An alternating-phase fed single-layer slotted waveguide array in 76 GHz band and its sidelobe suppression

This paper presents designs and performances of 76 GHz band alternating-phase fed single-layer slotted waveguide arrays. Two kinds of design, that is, uniform aperture illumination for maximum gain and Taylor distribution for sidelobe suppression of -25 dB, are conducted. High gain and high efficiency performance of 34.8 dBi with 57% is achieved for the former, while satisfactory sidelobe suppression of -20 dB in the H-plane and -23 dB in the E-plane with high efficiency is confirmed for the latter. The simple structure dispensing with electrical contact between the slotted plate and the groove feed structure is the key advantage of alternating-phase fed arrays and the slotted plate is just tacked on the feed structure with screws at the periphery. High gain and high efficiency performances predicted theoretically as well as design flexibility of the alternating-phase fed array are demonstrated in the millimeter wave frequency.

Analysis and Uniform Design of a Single-Layer slotted waveguide array Antenna with Baffles

This paper presents the formulation for the evaluation of external coupling in the alternating-phase feed single-layer slotted waveguide array antenna with baffles by using the Spectrum of Two-Dimensional Solutions (S2DS) method. A one-dimensional slot array is extracted from the array by assuming the periodicity in transversal direction and introducing the perfect electric conductors in the external region. The uniform excitation over the finite array is synthesized iteratively to demonstrate the fast and accurate results by S2DS. A unit design model with the baffles is introduced to determine the initial parameters of the slot pair which accelerate the iteration. Experiment at 25.3 GHz demonstrates good uniformity of the aperture field distribution as well as the effects of the baffles. The directivity is 32.7 dB which corresponds to the aperture efficiency 90.5% and the reflection is below -15.0 dB over 1.3 GHz.

A single-layer power divider for a slotted waveguide array using pi-junctions with an inductive wall

The authors propose a waveguide pi-junction with an inductive wall. Galerkin's method of moments is applied to analyze it and small reflection and desired power division ratio is realized. Good agreement between the calculated result and the measured one verifies the design of a unit pi-junction. The characteristics of a pi-junction with a wall are almost the same as those of a conventional pi-junction with a post. Important advantage of the new pi-junction with a wall is that it can be manufactured in the die-cast process of the waveguide while a post in the conventional one must be attached in an additional process. A 16-way power divider consisting of 8 pi-junctions is designed at 11.85 GHz and the characteristics are predicted.

In this letter, the design and 3-D-printed manufacturing of an omnidirectional and circularly polarized dual-band antenna for telemetry/telecommand (TMTC) applications in satellite communication on space segment are described. The antenna consists of slotted arrays on the circular waveguide with radially outward metallic disks and choke structures on these disks to improve the omnidirectionality and circular polarization performances. As the main novelty of the antenna design, the structure is fed with only one rectangular waveguide;therefore, the proposed antenna can be considered as a transceiver antenna. The design and simulations of the antenna and measurement results for 3-D-printed manufacturing are given at Ku-band. A 10 dB return loss bandwidth is found to be 500 MHz both for telemetry and telecommand bands having center frequencies of 12 and 14 GHz, respectively. Besides, the maximum axial ratio and minimum gain within 65 degrees beamwidth are obtained as 3 dB and -5 dBi, respectively, which are sufficient for the omnidirectional and circularly polarized antenna providing TMTC communication in satellite systems.

Design of W-Band Dual Polarized slotted waveguide array Antenna on an Annular Disk

This paper describes the design of a W-band dual polarized slotted waveguide (WG) array antenna. The slotted WG array is arranged on an annular disk, and so the feeding technique for this annular slotted WG array is more complicated than a regular array such as rectangular array. Broad wall longitudinal offset slot WG and edge wall inclined slot WG are staggered in turn to form the dual polarized array. In order to reduce the spacing between two adjacent WGs, ridged WG is adopted for designing broad wall longitudinal offset slot array. For making the beam width equal in two orthogonal principal planes, parameters of the WGs are carefully selected to ensure that the spacing between longitudinal adjacent slots is equal to that between transverse adjacent slots. The feeding networks for the annular disk WG array are carefully designed in irregular shapes, which can split electromagnetic waves to each WG (of the array) in phase. Finally, the antenna is processed and tested. Simulated results and measured results are presented. Measured gains of the horizontal polarization (HP) and vertical polarization (VP) are 35 dBi and 31.5 dBi, respectively, and efficiencies of the HP and VP are 56% and 28%, respectively, estimated from the measured gains and the calculated directivities.

This work performs the characteristics of an ultra-high power slotted waveguide array (SWA) antenna for L-band anti-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. The array antenna including 10x10 slotted elements is synthesized using the 25-dB Taylor distribution to create a narrow beam and focus the power on a flying vehicle. Besides, an improved feeding network is realized to reduce the weight but enhance the bandwidth of the antenna. The proposed antenna is then fabricated and tested with a mobile anti-UAV system. Experimental results indicate that the proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth from 1.25 to 1.385 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 10.25 %) with a peak gain of 27.4 dBi at 1.345 GHz. Importantly, the antenna works properly with an input peak power of 3.1 MW and can take down UAVs from a distance of up to 400 m.

This paper describes design, development and characterization of post tuned broadband slotted waveguide array (SWA) antenna. Impedance bandwidth of narrowband SWA antenna has been enhanced using admittance overloading and introducing broadband matching section designed using posts. The performance of post tuned SWA antenna has been compared with conventional narrowband SWA antenna. The proposed method to achieve broad impedance bandwidth features simple antenna structure as compared to conventional subarray technique, resulting in less mass and fabrication complexity in large arrays. The design and prototype development of X-band 10 elements linear post tuned SWA antenna has been presented. The developed prototype antenna shows 5.3% measured impedance bandwidth and 16.80dBi measured gain at 9.65GHz. The measured results are also compared with simulated results and found in good agreement with each other.
