On smoothing methods for the P₀ matrix linear complementarity problem

In this paper, we propose a Big-Gamma smoothing method for solving the P-0 matrix linear complementarity problem. We study the trajectory defined by the augmented smoothing equations and global convergence of the method under an assumption that the original P-0 matrix linear complementarity problem has a solution. The method has been tested on the P-0 matrix linear complementarity problem with unbounded solution set. Preliminary numerical results indicate the robustness of the method.

The system of absolute value equation, denoted by AVE, is a non-differentiable NP-hard problem. Many approaches have been proposed during the past decade and most of them focus on reformulating it as complementarity problem and then solve it accordingly. Another approach is to recast the AVE as a system of nonsmooth equations and then tackle with the nonsmooth equations. In this paper, we follow this path. In particular, we rewrite it as a system of smooth equations and propose four new smoothing functions along with a smoothing-type algorithm to solve the system of equations. The main contribution of this paper focuses on numerical comparisons which suggest a better choice of smoothing function along with the smoothing-type algorithm.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been known as one of the non-intrusive experimental methods in solid mechanics. This method has several advantages such as full-field examination, robustness of the algorithms, and the instantaneous visualization of the results. The key of this method is to find the displacement vectors by using a certain correlation method. In this paper, two correlation methods are performed and evaluated, i. e. cross-correlation and FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation) correlation. Performance of these methods in term of error analysis and processing time wre evaluated. Error analysis was performed by using self-generated artificial images with several desired parameters. The results showed that the cross-correlation has less fluctuation results and more constant accuracy. The average processing time of FFT technique is 64% of the cross correlaton. smoothing algorithms are applied to the displacement results. The results of the smoothing process are compared to the original one to verify the effect of the algorithms. This smoothing process is the important step if the derivative parameters of the displacements such as stress and strain distribution need to be obtained. The complete DIC algorithms are then applied to measure the displacements of the plate with circular and rectangular opening specimens by using experimental images. The result showed that this technique can produce displacement field with good accuracy.

Improved algorithm for graded meshes smoothing

In finite element simulation of metal forming, smoothing algorithms are commonly used to improve the quality of the distorted elements. However, the algorithms like Laplacian one tend to equalize the size of local elements to mean size. It is no doubt that it will redistribute nodal density and affect the simulation precision. Aiming at solving these problems, a modification of Giuliani algorithm, which is especially for graded meshes smoothing by eliminating the elements equalization influence by the mean height and basis of the triangles in the original algorithm, is presented in this paper. Also element distortion volume, element area changed ratio and compound element quality assessment factor are proposed to assess the results of two samples in this paper by 4 algorithms respectively. The results confirm that the modified algorithm can not only improve the meshes quality greatly, but also decrease the influence of the elements size gradient.

Grid-tied PV energy smoothing was implemented by using a valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery as a temporary energy storage device to both charge and discharge as required to smooth the inverter energy output from the PV array. Inverter output was controlled by the average solar irradiance over the previous 1 h time interval. On a clear day the solar irradiance power curve is offset by about 1 h, while on a variable cloudy day the inverter output power curve will be smoothed based on the average solar irradiance. Test results demonstrate that this smoothing algorithm works very well. Battery state of charge was more difficult to manage because of the variable system inefficiencies. Testing continued for 30-days and established consistent operational performance for extended periods of time under a wide variety of resource conditions. Both battery technologies from Exide (Absolyte) and East Penn (Advanced Valve Regulated Lead-Acid) proved to cycle well at a partial state of charge over the time interval tested.

This paper presents a near-optimum, low-complexity, fixed-interval smoothing algorithm that approaches the performance of an optimal smoother for the price of two low-complexity sequential estimators (two PLLs). The proposed smoothing PLL (S-PLL) algorithm is easy to implement and fits the Cramer-Rao bounds over a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios. Moreover we show that, compared to the conventional forward loop, the proposed scheme allows to have a large gain of several dBs and is able to track frequency offsets.

In this paper, we present reliable guidelines allowing to maximize the detection and analysis of deep defects in semiconductors by introducing a new method of analysis that we named Modified Levenberg-Marquardt Deep-Level Transient Spectroscopy (MLM-DLTS) based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm that we modified deliberately and associated with two other high-resolution techniques, i.e. the Matrix Pencil algorithm and modified Prony's method. The performances of the method were first assessed with a procedure of simulation by generating multi-exponential capacitance transients with a changing signal-to-noise ratio. These different tests have demonstrated to what extent such a method of analysis is more efficient than classic correlation methods based on DLTS spectra and than three high-resolution methods already existing in the literature. Finally, when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, and in the aim of getting precise results, a few smoothing algorithms were tested. Our findings evidence how the smoothing quality can be controlled under certain conditions while avoiding both the distortions in the shape of the capacitance transients and the DLTS spectra. A novel RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) refinement algorithm is proposed to enhance the resolution for indoor and outdoor real-time location tracking system. The proposed refinement algorithm is implemented in two separate phases. During the first phase, called the pre-processing step, RSSI values at different static locations are collected and processed to build a calibrated model for each reference node. Different measurement campaigns pertinent to each parameter in the model are implemented to analyze the sensitivity of RSSI. The propagation models constructed for each reference nodes are needed by the second phase. During the next phase, called the runtime process, real-time tracking is performed. smoothing algorithm is proposed to minimize the dynamic fluctuation of radio signal received from each reference node when the mobile target is moving. Filtered RSSI values are converted to distances using formula calibrated in the first phase. Finally, an iterative trilateration algorithm is used for position estimation. Experiments relevant to the optimization algorithm are carried out in both indoor and outdoor environments and the results validated the feasibility of proposed algorithm in reducing the dynamic fluctuation for more accurate position estimation.

Chaotic SVD method for minimizing the effect of exponential trends in detrended fluctuation analysis

The Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and its extensions (MF-DFA) have been used extensively to determine possible long-range correlations in self-affine signals. However, recent studies have reported the susceptibility of DFA to trends which give rise to spurious crossovers and prevent reliable estimation of the scaling exponents. in this study, a smoothing algorithm based on the Chaotic Singular-Value Decomposition (CSVD) is proposed to minimize the effect of exponential trends and distortion in the log-log plots obtained by DFA techniques. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated on monofractal and multifractal data corrupted with exponential trends. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Enhanced interframe coding based on morphological segmentation

Morphological segmentation has been proposed as an attractive alternative to transform-based compression for interframe coding of digital video. Being a spatial approach, segmentation based coding eliminates the artefacts commonly associated with transform coding, such as ringing around sharp edges. One disadvantage of this method is that it can introduce spurious edges in the reconstructed video sequence. associated with the boundaries of the transmitted regions. The authors present a statistically derived smoothing algorithm that reduces this problem. In addition, a single-stage entropy coder for the update signal is proposed in place of the conventional two-stage algorithm. Comparisons are made between the performance of a traditional motion compensated DCT coder and segmentation based codecs (with and without smoothing) for CIF sequences at bit rates between 64 and 256 kbps. It is concluded that, at the bit rates under investigation, the segmentation based method yields improved subjective quality of the reconstructed video.
