Model Driven Development (MDD) of complex software systems can require manual adaptations of the generated artifacts. In fact, in order to cope with unforeseen requirements which are not completely satisfiable by means of the involved modeling languages, developer interventions could be needed. The optimal solution to deal with this issue, is based on the expressiveness improvement of the involved metamodels and refinement of the used model transformations. Nevertheless, these adaptations are not always possible or cost-effective especially if the new functionalities that have to be introduced affect only the single application being developed. This paper discusses and attempt to hand-tune the generated code by providing an approach supporting its merging with hand written modifications. For this purpose, the behaviour model of the system under study is considered to graphically specify the injection points where the modifications have to occur. The discussions are based on a running example consisting of a simple Web application.

This research presents and analyzes an empirically grounded account of a new trend, open innovation, in the IT industry. The case depicts another new trend, innovation through customization of standard software as a business model, and we investigate the open innovation activities of an interorganizational network which consists of a small customizing company, a large global software producer, and other companies involved in the innovation process. We contribute to the development of a theory of open IT innovation with a theoretical framework that integrates formally separate aspects of open innovation and interorganizational networks. We extend the literature on open innovation by broadening the view from one focal firm to the relations in a network of companies that mutually contribute to innovation which occur in the different companies. Our research underlines the importance of balanced formal and informal relations, and coopetive and opportunistic behavior for the open innovation process.

Modern software engineering practice allows us to build more complex software than ever before. However, on the other hand, it causes some negative consequences such as bloatware and feature creep which have been observed in many software evolution and iteration lifecycle. In this paper, we propose an approach to customizing Java bytecode by applying static dataflow analysis and enhanced programming slicing technique. This approach allows developers to customize Java programs based on various users' requirements or remove unnecessary features from tangled code in legacy projects. We evaluate our approach by conducting case studies on removing cross cutting features from real world Java programs. The results show that our approach has the potential for practical use. Additionally, we find out that, by increasing the diversity of the software, our approach can help achieve moving target defense.

Customizing software should be as easy as using it. Unfortunately, most customization methods require users to abruptly shift from using a graphical interface to writing scripts in a programming language. We introduce data-driven customization, a new way for end users to extend software by direct manipulation without doing traditional programming. We augment existing user interfaces with a table view showing the structured data inside the application. When users edit the table, their changes are reflected in the original UI. This simple model accommodates a spreadsheet formula language and custom data-editing widgets, providing enough power to implement a variety of useful extensions. We illustrate the approach with Wildcard, a browser extension that implements data-driven customization on the web using web scraping. Through concrete examples, we show that this paradigm can support useful extensions to many real websites, and we share reflections from our experiences using the tool. Finally, we share our broader vision for data-driven customization: a future where end users have more access to the data inside their applications, and can more flexibly re-purpose that data as part of everyday software usage.

Modern software engineering practice heavily relies on third party libraries, existing frameworks, high level programming languages, and agile development methodologies, which allows us build more complex software and deliver it faster. However, on the other hand, such practice causes some negative consequences such as bloatware and feature creep. A phenomenon of importing and implementing redundant features into software products has been observed in many software evolution and iteration lifecycles. In this paper, we describe an approach to customizing Java bytecode by applying static dataflow analysis and enhanced programming slicing technique. This approach allows developers to customize Java programs based on various users' requirements or remove unnecessary features from tangled code in legacy projects. Our preliminary evaluation and case study results show that our approach has the potential for practical use.

The advancements in software product lines have initiated a shift of focus from the development of individual to lines of software products. Meanwhile, research in service ontology and service-oriented architecture is producing the much-needed technologies to link functional context of services with requirement features, and to automate the discovery and composition of services. This paper presents a novel approach of interactive requirements elicitation for the production of customized software systems. It first develops an ontology model to represent the knowledge of common and variable software assets, and then suggests a nine-step process to create instances of the ontology model as abstract requirement models for specific application domains. Moreover, an algorithm is developed to enable software clients to interactively "order" service-oriented software products by means of dialogue in natural language. In addition to technical details, this paper also includes a case study of an online book shopping system to demonstrate the operation of the proposed approach and to provide evidence of its usability.

Modern software engineering allows us to build more complex softwarethan ever before. On the other hand, it increasingly bringsdifferent types of redundancy into software products. Thecommunity uses the term "bloatware" to describe software thatcontains much bloat. Bloatware causes many negative consequencesincluding larger disk footprint, higher memory consumption, longerloading and downloading time, higher software complexity and maintenancecost, and many security *** this thesis, we review, investigate, and develop techniques tomitigate the problem of bloatware from a holistic point of viewfrom software engineering, software security, and programming languageperspectives. Specifically, we customize the bloatware to remove thesoftware bloat from the following three ***, in current software engineering practice, even if only one method of a class is possibly used in a software, the complete class, the whole library package, and the entire runtime environment are still included as a whole in the software product delivery. The unused code in applications, libraries and the running environment has become one of the important sources of software bloat. Our study targets on these three different parts and takes advantage of the iterative hybridstatic and dynamic analysis to identify and remove the unused code fromthe them. Second, smartphones, as a platform that has more limited resources thanother computation bases, are more subjected to the bloatware problem. We investigate software bloat that would lead to the rapid size increaseof Android applications. We categorize the sources of Android applicationsoftware bloat into two types, compile-time redundancy and install-timeredundancy. In addition, we propose a fully automated approach totrimming off both types of software bloat. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a dominant approach for dealing with legacy information system problems. In order to avoid invalidating maintenance and development support from the ERP vendor, most organizations reengineer their business processes in line with those implicit within the software. Regardless, some customization is typically required. This paper presents two case studies of ERP projects where customizations have been performed. The case analysis suggests that while customizations can give true organizational benefits, careful consideration is required to determine whether a customization is viable given its potential impact upon future maintenance. Learning to use a learning management system (LMS) can often be complex and challenging for instructors who have little time to explore the application interface. We ran formative interviews (N=10) suggesting that instructors often prefer to consult colleagues to seek examples of customizations and their explanations. Based on our findings, we designed and developed Customizer, an in-context example-based customization sharing platform that runs atop a widely-used LMS and facilitates discovery of relevant customizations shared by peers. Customizer allows instructors to experiment with shared customizations in familiar contexts by copying their course content into on-the-fly testing environments, minimizing any risk of breaking their live course setups. Our usability evaluation (N=10) showed that most users found Customizer intuitive and useful, and that its exploratory interface was helpful in a variety of use cases. Furthermore, many participants saw potential for Customizer to improve their workflows in other applications beyond educational contexts.
