This paper proposes an approach, called “the Harmonic design method”, to achieve an approximately ideal language that simultaneously serves the purposes or requirements of software specification, verification, implementation and so on. This approach is based on two important concepts—partitioning and unification. In the Harmonic design method, the collection of the problem-oriented languages and the transformation algorithms between the languages, provided through the process of the partitioning and unification, is regarded as the approximation to the target ideal language. As an application of the Harmonic design method, the design of a software support system for making the development of protocols and communication software easy is given. In this design, we provide three problem-oriented languages, viz., the protocol specification language NESDEL, the communication software oriented programming language IDL and the language EXPA which has both a framework for expressing protocols and an algorithm for verifying protocols, and three transformation algorithms between them, i.e., NESDEL-to-EXPA, EXPA-to-NESDEL and NESDEL-to-IDL. The details of these languages and transformation algorithms are also given. Finally, we introduce some software tools used for supporting these languages and transformation algorithms.

Mascot is a software design method based on a form of a functional and structural design decomposition which is particularly well suited for use in the development of large, distributed, embedded real-time data-processing systems. This paper discusses the problem of using the Mascot design approach when the implementation language is Ada. A particular mapping strategy is developed which, starting from the Mascot graphical design representation, allows Ada package specifications to be derived by the application of a set of simple rules. The bodies are then programmed in standard Ada and may be re-used within other Mascot-derived design structures. The particular problems of maintaining run-time data integrity when coding the bodies of packages to represent the Mascot intercommunication data area (IDA) in Ada are specifically addressed. Finally, the paper discusses the Mascot status progression commands in relation to Ada. (This paper depends heavily on the paper by Simpson [5] published in the same issueof the software Engineering Journal and should be read in conjuction with it.)

Mascot is a software design method based on a form of functional and structural design decomposition which is particularly suitable for use in the development of large, distributed, embedded real-time data processing systems. The method provides a design language and graphical notation, together with a procedure for design derivation. This paper describes the main features of the method and the principles on which the methods is based. An example problem and its solution illustrate the application of the method. The solution is extended to show how Mascot provides a straightforward and natural means of coping with multiprocessor target hardware where communication is through shared memory.

MAPPING A MASCOT 3 design INTO OCCAM

Mascot is the MOD preferred software design method for embedded software systems. It has been widely used, both with and without toolsets, for the design of software written in Pascal and CORAL 66. A report of a study funded by RSRE proposed how to implement Mascot 3 systems using Ada. This paper builds on that study to propose a mapping to allow Mascot 3 to be used with Occam. The proposed method is easy to use without a toolset and appears to produce efficient Occam programs.

design is a fundamental activity in the creation of software systems. It can be a daunting task since design decisions have long term implications to the system being built. These decisions are especially daunting for students who have limited experience and knowledge in building software systems. In this paper, we propose a new design method and course structure that aims to demystify the process of software design and helps students learn to think analytically while building intuition about the trade-offs being made during the design phase.

In art, there are problems with the representation of space in the plane of a picture. Solutions to these problems from ancient cultures are described. Connections between Perception Psychology and geometrical drawings made by children are discussed, as are the development of spatial elements in children's drawings, different representations of linear perspective, isometry, 'Dürer's Way', central and X-perspective. The paper goes on to describe an educational software design course in Scandinavia. The design process is presented by an account of the methodological and pedagogical considerations that have led to the implementation of the spatial drawing program 'RUM'. © 1989 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.
