design patterns (DPs) are recurring solutions for software design problems. They are recommended and employed for their benefits and impact on software quality. However, the improper extension and implementation of design patterns raise the emergence of accumulating bad smells in DPs structure and behavior. pattern grime occurrence is one of the bad smells in the design pattern. Grime highly reduces design pattern usability, testability, and adaptability, and even prevents their proper implementation. Despite that, pattern grime occurrence may have many severe violations and impacts on design patterns. For instance, grime occurrence contributes to build-up code smells, violates object-oriented principles, and degenerates pattern quality and code structure. This research focuses on investigating the violations roles of grime occurrence in design patterns and aims to propose a taxonomy for pattern grime violation types, to take the first step to develop a prediction model to detect pattern grime occurrence in the software design pattern. Thus, this research outlines a research project targeting the main research question: "how pattern grime is correlated, and how this might lead to violate design pattern principles, structure, and quality? We plan to answer this question through various stages. First, we investigate the commonalities and variability of pattern grime occurrence on design patterns. Secondly, we identify the types of grime roles violation in DPs to propose a taxonomy of pattern grime violation types. The results of these stages will help to identify a prediction model to predict pattern grime in the software design patterns. © 2022 ACM.

Driven by the success of Internet of Things, the number of embedded systems is constantly increasing. Reducing power consumption and improving energy efficiency are among the key challenges for battery-powered embedded systems. Additionally, threats like climate change clearly illustrate the need for systems with low resource usages. Due to the impact of software applications on the system's power consumption, it is important to optimize the software design even in early development phases. The important role of the software layer is often overlooked because energy consumption is commonly associated with the hardware layer. As a result, existing research mainly focuses on energy optimization at the hardware level, while only limited research has been published on energy optimization at the software design level. This work presents a novel approach to propose an energy-aware software design pattern framework description, which takes power consumption and time behavior into account. We evaluate the expressiveness of the framework by defining design patterns, which use elaborated power-saving strategies for various hardware components to reduce the overall energy consumption of an embedded system. Furthermore, we introduce a dimensionless numerical efficiency factor to make energy savings quantifiable and a comparison for design patterns applied in various use cases possible.

Auto-graders could be useful in MOOCs. While they are useful for closed-ended questions, there is still ongoing research on auto-graders for open-ended questions. In the software design patterns course, students were often asked to explain how the patterns are implemented in their programs and manual grading such assessments could be time-consuming. We plan to develop an auto-grader for explanations of software design patterns. It ranks the submissions based on their comprehensiveness and then assigns quality marks to them. For our initial study, we present the ranking method. Our evaluation of 310 submissions shows that the ranking method is satisfactory with around 55% top-K precision.

This paper aims to gather tools from the scientific literature that can be used to teach software design patterns and software architecture patterns. The underlying procedure is a systematic literture review based on Kitchenham's methodology. In order to improve categorization and clarify the objectives and focus, this systematic literature review was classified according to Cooper's taxonomy. The presentation of the results following the underlying research questions of the tools found and listed includes the general description, the presentation of the functionalities, the support of the tools in teaching as well as a classification of the functionalities into the five areas: description, detection, selection, application, and implementation.

Larger Object Oriented(OO) software systems can benefit greatly from the use of software design patterns. Because design pattern offers a well-structured and proven solution to recurrent issues that developers deal with. Previous studies explored the effects of design patterns and created several models for mining design patterns. Some of them were developed using machine learning (ML) methods. This paper concentrated on giving a brief summary of the difficulties with design patterns from the developer's point of view, as well as their impact on some quality aspects. Along with that, we discussed the shortcomings of contemporary classic pattern mining techniques. We compared both conventional mining tools and ML-based mining tools. Findings show that both the random forest model and patternScout, which is based on SPARQL queries, can effectively discover all patterns with higher precision and recall values.

Toward integrating cognitive components with computational models of emotion using software design patterns

Computational models of emotion (CMEs) are software systems designed to imitate particular aspects of human emotions. The main purpose of this type of computational model is to capture the complexity of the human emotion process in a software system that is incorporated into a cognitive agent architecture. However, creating a CME that closely imitates the actual functioning of emotions demands to address some challenges such as (i) sharing information among independently developed cognitive and affective components, and (ii) interconnecting complex cognitive and affective components that must interact with one another in order to generate realistic emotions, which may even affect agents' decision making. This paper proposes an architectural pattern aimed at cataloging and describing fundamental components of CMEs and their interrelationships with cognitive components. In this architectural pattern, external cognitive components and internal affective components of CMEs do not interact directly but are extended by including message exchange methods in order to use a publish-subscribe channel, which enables their intercommunication, thus attenuating issues such as software heterogeneity. This structural approach centralizes communication management and separates the inherent complexity of the cognitive and affective processes from the complexity of their interaction mechanisms. In so doing, it enables the design of CMEs' architectures composed of independently developed affective and cognitive components. The proposed architectural pattern attempts to make progress in capturing the complex process of human emotions in a software system that adheres to software engineering best practices and that incorporates quality attributes such as flexibility and interoperability. pattern-Based Test Suite Reduction Method for Smart Contracts

Testing in the software development process is one of the crucial disciplines. The immutability of deployed smart contracts makes tests particularly important in their design and implementation. The objective is to minimize the costs of smart contract testing by reducing the number of test cases. The article presents the test suite reduction method for smart contracts, which exploits the knowledge of their design manner. In particular, the design of a mechanism for evaluating the list of verification rules controlling the execution of transactions was used. The proposed method defines a minimum set of test cases for smart contracts designed according to a specific design pattern. The test case reduction level was shown using analytical formulas enclosed in the paper. Compared to full coverage, the method reduces over 96% of test cases for a smart contract with at least eight verification rules. The performance tests were conducted and the analysis of the results was enclosed as well. Both the smart contract evaluation time and the test suite execution time are less than 0.01 of a millisecond. Besides, the method reduces the number of test data for smart contracts by over 79%. Therefore, the method can be especially useful in continuous software integration and delivery.

Towards the construction of computational models of emotions from the perspective of a software system

Computational models of emotion (CMEs) are software systems designed to emulate the diverse aspects of the human emotion process. This type of model is commonly incorporated into cognitive agent architectures to provide mechanisms underlying affective behavior. The construction of CMEs involve theories that explain human emotion as well as computational artifacts related to the design and implementation of software systems. Although most CMEs reported in the literature provide details on their theoretical foundations, it is uncommon to find details about the computational practices and artifacts utilized during their design and implementation phases. This paper presents and discusses some challenges associated with the computational nature of this type of model: (i) software quality attributes in CMEs, (ii) Interoperability between CMEs and cognitive components, (iii) Formal procedures for the design of CMEs, and (iv) Reference schemes to validate CMEs. software engineering is used as a reference to propose and discuss these challenges. In addition, a reference architecture designed by following software engineering practices and artifacts is proposed to discuss the implications of addressing these challenges. The present research is at the intersection of human emotion modeling and software engineering to contribute to the software development process of affective systems.

This paper presents a software design pattern for systems composed from distributed intelligent mechatronic modules which communicate with each other via wireless interface. The design pattern is formed by integrating the reliable communication mechanism called channel, which comes from a system-level programming language SystemJ. The paper demonstrates how the design pattern can be applied in an industrial automation example.

The new IEEE 11073 service-oriented device connectivity (SDC) standard proposals for networked point-of-care and surgical devices constitutes the basis for improved interoperability due to its independence of vendors. To accelerate the distribution of the standard a reference implementation is indispensable. However, the implementation of such a framework has to overcome several non-trivial challenges. First, the high level of complexity of the underlying standard must be reflected in the software design. An efficient implementation has to consider the limited resources of the underlying hardware. Moreover, the frameworks purpose of realizing a distributed system demands a high degree of reliability of the framework itself and its internal mechanisms. Additionally, a framework must provide an easy-to-use and fail-safe application programming interface (API). In this work, we address these challenges by discussing suitable software engineering principles and practical coding guidelines. A descriptive model is developed that identifies key strategies. General feasibility is shown by outlining environments in which our implementation has been utilized.
