Robustness of Simulink/Stateflow Model Against Implementation Imperfections

Model-based software development frameworks such as Simulink/Stateflow support auto code generation. Due to the limitations of the implementation platform on which the generated code is deployed on, imprecision is introduced to the implementation and may lead to unpredictable behaviors in the implementation. In this paper, an implementation model is defined to model the imprecisions introduced by the platform. We present a notion of Path-Robustness (P-Robustness) and Path/Output-Robustness (P/O-Robustness) between the software model and its implementation model to determine if the implementation preserves the control and data flow of the software. An approach is proposed to check the P-Robustness and P/O-Robustness properties of the software model by constructing an error propagation model from the implementation model. A comprehensive and versatile reactor analysis code system, MARBLE, has been developed. MARBLE is designed as a software development framework for reactor analysis, which offers reusable and extendible functions and data models based on physical concepts, rather than a reactor analysis code system. From a viewpoint of the code system, it provides a set of functionalities utilized in a detailed reactor analysis scheme for fast criticality assemblies and power reactors, and nuclear data related uncertainty quantification such as cross-section adjustment. MARBLE includes five sub-systems named ECRIPSE, BIBLO, SCHEME, UNCERTAINTY and ORPHEUS, which are constructed of the shared functions and data models in the framework. By using these sub-systems, MARBLE covers all phases required in fast reactor core design prediction and improvement procedures, i.e. integral experiment database management, nuclear data processing, fast criticality assembly analysis, uncertainty quantification, and power reactor analysis. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play important roles in systems that interact with the real world (e.g., cyber-physical systems and internet of things). To mitigate the complex nature of WSNs, many platforms at different abstraction levels (e.g., abstraction of hardware, communications, and individual nodes) have been proposed in the last decade. WSNs in different environments might employ different platforms to satisfy nonfunctional requirements (NFRs) because the diversity of platforms results in trade-offs of NFRs and the quality of WSN heavily depends on the environment it runs. Although WSN software should be highly portable, existing approaches only support porting between operating systems and not more abstract middleware. Herein we propose a methodology with a framework to capture various platforms in the WSN domain with platform-independent multi-level models. A case study demonstrates that our framework can port WSN software to platforms at different abstraction levels and adapt the software to the new platform to improve performance.

MCdevelop - a universal framework for Stochastic Simulations

We present MCdevelop, a universal computer framework for developing and exploiting the wide class of Stochastic Simulations (SS) software. This powerful universal SS software development tool has been derived from a series of scientific projects for precision calculations in high energy physics (HEP), which feature a wide range of functionality in the SS software needed for advanced precision Quantum Field Theory calculations for the past LEP experiments and for the ongoing LHC experiments at CERN, Geneva. MCdevelop is a "spin-off" product of HEP to be exploited in other areas, while it will still serve to develop new SS software for HEP experiments. Typically SS involve independent generation of large sets of random "events", often requiring considerable CPU power. Since SS jobs usually do not share memory it makes them easy to parallelize. The efficient development, testing and running in parallel SS software requires a convenient framework to develop software source code, deploy and monitor batch jobs, merge and analyse results from multiple parallel jobs, even before the production runs are terminated. Throughout the years of development of stochastic simulations for HEP, a sophisticated framework featuring all the above mentioned functionality has been implemented. MCdevelop represents its latest version, written mostly in C++ (GNU compiler gcc). It uses Autotools to build binaries (optionally managed within the KDevelop 3.5.3 Integrated development Environment (IDE)). It uses the open-source ROOT package for histogramming, graphics and the mechanism of persistency for the C++ objects. MCdevelop helps to run multiple parallel jobs on any computer cluster with NQS-type batch system. software risk comes mainly from its poor reliability, but how to effectively achieve high reliability still remains a challenge. This paper puts forward a framework for systematically integrating formal specification, review, and testing, and shows how it can be applied to effectively eliminate errors in the major phases of software development process to enhance software reliability. In this framework, requirements errors can be removed and missing requirements can be identified by formalizing requirements into formal specifications whose validity can be ensured by rigorous review. The valid specification can then be used as a firm foundation for implementation and for rigorous inspection, testing, and walkthrough of the implemented program. We discuss how formalization, review, and testing work together at different levels of software development to improve software reliability through detecting and removing errors in documentation.

Unified framework for development, Deployment and Robust Testing of Neuroimaging Algorithms

Developing both graphical and command-line user interfaces for neuroimaging algorithms requires considerable effort. Neuroimaging algorithms can meet their potential only if they can be easily and frequently used by their intended users. Deployment of a large suite of such algorithms on multiple platforms requires consistency of user interface controls, consistent results across various platforms and thorough testing. We present the design and implementation of a novel object-oriented framework that allows for rapid development of complex image analysis algorithms with many reusable components and the ability to easily add graphical user interface controls. Our framework also allows for simplified yet robust nightly testing of the algorithms to ensure stability and cross platform interoperability. All of the functionality is encapsulated into a software object requiring no separate source code for user interfaces, testing or deployment. This formulation makes our framework ideal for developing novel, stable and easy-to-use algorithms for medical image analysis and computer assisted interventions. The framework has been both deployed at Yale and released for public use in the open source multi-platform image analysis software-BioImage Suite (***).
