Using an existing decision support system in different data availability situations is a challenge. This is due to the significant variance in terms of what data can be acquired as input for such systems. In urban energy planning, the problem of data availability is even more crucial because of the large amount of data that is required. This problem affects the portability and the viability of such systems. i.e. they can only be used in one single specific situation at a certain point of time, as long as data are available in the same way. This paper presents an ontology-based approach for developing and keeping such systems more robust against data availability problems. The methodology allows integrating the initial requirements of the system, the domain semantics, and a multiple level-of-detail answering mechanism. The results presented in this paper are validated against an application in modeling a modular ontology-based urban energy planning support system. The proposed solution, in this paper, allows the flexibility of these systems in terms of input data. Furthermore, it allows better traceability of how the system fulfills the initial requirements.

The cloud computing paradigm introduces new possibilities and challenges for application design and deployment. On-demand resource provisioning, as well as resource and cost elasticity, need to be considered when realizing large-scale distributed applications for cloud environments. Current approaches do not sufficiently address the challenges of efficiently architecting and deploying cloud applications in a holistic manner and do not deal with the specific challenges encountered in cloud infrastructures. In this paper we introduce a methodology tackling the practical problems encountered when designing and deploying cloud applications. It enables the structured creation of cloud-native applications, addressing the complete application development lifecycle, from architectural design to concrete deployment topologies provisioned and executed on cloud infrastructure. By using iterative refinement and seamless provenance documentation of decisions made in the process, the methodology eases communication with relevant stakeholders and enables efficient design and deployment of distributed cloud applications.

Two-thirds of the overall primary energy in the world is consumed in cities, resulting in 71 percent of all energy related greenhouse gas emissions. There are many ongoing initiatives to develop strategies to lower the high amount of emissions at the level of cities. However, energy planners face problems that are related to the complexity of the urban energy systems, encapsulating the components of the city together with their properties and interactions that are relevant to the planning process. The complexity of the problem increases given the unavailability of data and their multiple levels of detail (LOD). Therefore, there is a need for adequate tools to support the development of integrated energy strategies, defining specific quantifiable CO_2 reduction measures to be implemented at the city level. In this research, we perform an analysis of urban energy planning processes. Then, we extract the general requirements of decision support in this discipline. Then, we perform a general data availability review in cities. This process results in formalizing a modular methodology for the development of urban energy planning support software. This methodology is specific to urban energy planning, it ensures the modularity of the development process, it leads to flexible software that operates under different available LODs of data, and it addresses the problem of data availability at the development stage.

Agile Product Line Engineering (APLE) is a relatively new approach which has emerged as the result of combining two successful approaches: software Product Line Engineering and Agile software development. The goal of this combined approach is to cover the weaknesses of each of the two approaches while maximizing the advantages of both. Several methodologies exist which provide a practical process for applying APLE. In this paper, a select set of these methodologies are evaluated using a criteria-based approach, the results of which highlight each methodology's strengths and weaknesses. The evaluation framework and the results can be helpful in selecting, comparing, and modifying APLE methodologies;they can also be used for developing bespoke APLE methodologies, tailored to fit the specific needs of organizations and projects.

In high-integrity systems, certain quality requirements have gained utmost significance in such a way that failing to satisfy them at a particular level may result in the loss of the entire system, endangerment of human life, peril to the organization's existence, or serious damage to the environment. High-integrity computer systems should incorporate top-quality software in order to adequately address their stringent quality requirements. The methodologies used for developing high-integrity software must possess special characteristics in order to ensure successful realization of the requirements. software Process patterns represent empirically proven methods of software development that can be exploited as reusable chunks to produce bespoke methodologies, tailored to fit specific project situations and requirements. The authors provide a set of process patterns extracted from methodologies and standards which are specifically intended for developing high-integrity systems. The methodologies and standards which were used as resources for extracting these patterns were selected based on their history of successful application. The patterns have been organized into a generic High Integrity software development Process (HISDP);this process framework can be instantiated by method engineers to produce tailored-to-fit methodologies for developing high-integrity software.

Offshore software development (OSD) is now becoming a global trend. While western companies are using OSD effectively, Japanese companies have not yet used it effectively. Several studies have concluded that this is due to the peculiarity of the Japanese software development style in OSD and have pointed out the problems of Japanese OSD. However, the peculiarity of the Japanese software development style has not been identified yet. Therefore, this paper attempts to identify it. Most previous studies have described the problems of Japanese OSD without considering the software development method. We have focused on agile methods and attempted to analyze the problems pointed out previous studies in accordance with the features of agile methods. It was found that the Japanese software development style is agile-like. In addition, a survey was conducted to find out what kind of software development method is being used in Japanese OSD projects. It was found that the waterfall method is mainly used. It is concluded that the peculiarity of the Japanese software development style and problems come from the conflict between the software development methods used and their actual implementations. software development based on Soft System Bus (SSB) is a novel approach to software Engineering. From the viewpoint of SSB, this paper presents a lightweight framework for developing on-line distributed applications, called MicroSSB. The framework partly implements the core functions of SSB-based system, including communication channel, data-instruction station, message exchange, security check and dynamic component management etc. The paper also proposes a guideline for using MicroSSB. By using MicroSSB, the designers and developers of distributed applications can focus on the core of their product instead of struggling with the low-level distributed programming. As case studies, the paper also shows two real applications based on MicroSSB: an experimental collaborative decision making system for air traffic flow control and a marine emergency commanding system.

The problem of the evolutionary maintenance of large information systems is very critical. The time and costs required to adapt the system to the market's evolutive dynamics are no longer compatible with the objectives of the business. The experimentation, on small-scale, in the laboratory of new technologies and new methods is ineffective for this type of systems and it is rare that the customer accepts the risk of innovations in an industrial project. In this paper we propose an intervention strategy and a reference architecture to transfer, using an approach based on "small steps", innovations obtained from research into new industrial applications.

Iterative criteria-based approach to engineering the requirements of software development methodologies

software engineering endeavours are typically based on and governed by the requirements of the target software;requirements identification is therefore an integral part of software development methodologies. Similarly, engineering a software development methodology (SDM) involves the identification of the requirements of the target methodology. methodology engineering approaches pay special attention to this issue;however, they make little use of existing methodologies as sources of insight into methodology requirements. The authors propose an iterative method for eliciting and specifying the requirements of a SDM using existing methodologies as supplementary resources. The method is performed as the analysis phase of a methodology engineering process aimed at the ultimate design and implementation of a target methodology. An initial set of requirements is first identified through analysing the characteristics of the development situation at hand and/or via delineating the general features desirable in the target methodology. These initial requirements are used as evaluation criteria;refined through iterative application to a select set of relevant methodologies. The finalised criteria highlight the qualities that the target methodology is expected to possess, and are therefore used as a basis for de. ning the final set of requirements. In an example, the authors demonstrate how the proposed elicitation process can be used for identifying the requirements of a general object-oriented SDM. Owing to its basis in knowledge gained from existing methodologies and practices, the proposed method can help methodology engineers produce a set of requirements that is not only more complete in span, but also more concrete and rigorous.

Despite advances in situational method engineering, many software organizations continue to adopt an ad-hoc mix of method fragments from well-known development methods such as Scrum or XP, based on their perceived suitability to project or organizational needs. With the increasing availability of empirical evidence on the success or failure of various software development methods and practices under different situational conditions, it now becomes feasible to make this evidence base systematically accessible to practitioners so that they can make informed decisions when creating situational methods for their organizations. This paper proposes a framework for evaluating the suitability of candidate method fragments prior to their adoption in software projects. The framework makes use of collected knowledge about how each method fragment can contribute to various project objectives, and what requisite conditions must be met for the fragment to be applicable. Pre-constructed goal models for the selected fragments are retrieved from a repository, merged, customized with situational factors, and then evaluated using a qualitative evaluation procedure adapted from goal-oriented requirements engineering.
