software development is a complex process involving many people and development tools and their interactions;during development, a lot of data such as source code, documents, or software artifacts and information such as issues, discussions, or code analyses are generated or modified. In addition to the analysis and visualization of software systems, it is useful to analyze the software development process to obtain better information about the quality, reliability, and trustworthiness of the software. To gain insights and knowledge about software development processes, we extract the provenance of development processes, especially from version control systems for Git-based software projects, and visualize the provenance information using graph visualization, metrics representation, and development timelines;including an integration of these methods into a web-based dashboard. With the help of visual provenance representations, project managers can gain an overview and insights into development progress, effects of process changes, and interactions among developers and with external contributors, which we exemplify with a case study of a software with high social relevance.

Interpersonal process recall: a novel approach to illuminating students' software development processes

Background and Context: Encouraging undergraduate programming students to think more about their software development processes is challenging. Most programming courses focus on coding skill development and mastering programming language features;subsequently software development processes (e.g. planning, code commenting, and error debugging) are undervalued. Moreover, many of these processes involve tacit thinking that is often seemingly invisible, meaning it can be difficult for teachers to identify and address shortcomings in student processes. Objective: In this paper, we employ a novel approach called Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) to encourage students to think more about their software development processes. Method: We conducted IPR sessions with five undergraduate programming students-we screen captured them working on programming assignments, and then used the screen captures to stimulate reflection. IPR is hallmarked by several key features, namely its developmental (rather than evaluative) focus, and the use of a facilitator to guide reflection in a structured way. Findings: We found IPR was useful for both the teaching staff and the students, revealing incongruence between the value students placed on certain development processes and what they actually do in practice.

The software process improvement has gained a lot of space in recent years;the software Engineering community has developed models that improve the software process. Knowing the reality of software development companies is fundamental for the application of some process improvement model. In the case of SMEs, due to lack of resources, this improvement may be unattainable. In this document, we present an analysis of the processes and activities that are considered by the CMMI process improvement models, Competisoft and ISO/IEC 29110. The aspects that must be fulfilled are established within the different activities that correspond to two processes: planning/management of the project and development/implementation of software;the instrument was designed and 10 SME software developers were evaluated. The results obtained indicate that the companies surveyed do not comply with all the aspects required to complete the initial level of a process improvement model.

Today's software development projects must respond to fierce competition, a constantly changing marketplace, and rapid technological innovation. Agile development processes are popular when attempting to respond to these changes in a controlled manner; however, selecting an ill-suited process may increase project costs and risk. Before adopting a seemingly promising Agile approach, we desire to evaluate the approach's applicability in the context of the specific product, organization, and staff. Simulation provides a means to do this. Because of Agile's emphasis on the individual and interactions, we theorize that a high-fidelity model---one that models individual behavior---will produce more accurate outcome predictions than those that do not account for individual behavior. To this end, we define criteria, based on the Agile Manifesto, for determining if a simulation is suited to model Agile processes and use the criteria to assess existing simulations (and other evaluation frameworks). Finding no suitable evaluation framework, we focus on constructing a simulation that satisfies our criteria. In this work, we propose a process simulation reference model that provides the constructs and relationships needed to capture the interactions among the individuals, product, process, and project in a holistic fashion. As a means for evaluating both our criteria and reference model, we constructed the Lean/Agile Process Simulation Environment (LAPSE), a multi-agent simulation framework for evaluating Agile processes prior to adoption within an organization. The contributions of this work are threefold. Building on the simulation assessment criteria of Kellner, Madachy, and Raffo and the Agile Manifesto, we establish criteria for assessing Agile simulations. From there, we define a reference model that captures the constructs and relationships needed to simulate Agile processes. Recently, the modelling of whole process of software (SW) development is performed using extended waterfall and agile models. The further advancement of extended waterfall and agile models in the main phases like communication, planning, modelling, construction and deployment can improve the overall quality of the product. Accordingly, in this study, artificial intelligence (AI) activities are integrated into SW development processes. The important AI activities like intelligent agents, machine learning (ML), knowledge representation, statistical model, probabilistic methods, and fuzzy are integrated into the extended waterfall model. Again, AI activities like intelligent decision making, ML, Turing test, search and optimisation are integrated into the agile model. Two metrics such as, Usability Goals Achievement Metric and Index of Integration are evaluated in five independent SW projects. Once SW projects are developed using these models, feedback queries have been collected formally and the collected data are extensively analysed to identify the individual characteristics of products, identifying correlation behaviour of products with respect to model and metrics.

Various semantic technologies such as ontologies, machine learning, or artificial intelligence-based are being used today with data science for the purpose of explaining the meaning of data, and making this explanation exploitable by computer processing. Although some quick and brief reports do exist, to the best of our knowledge, the literature lacks a detailed study reporting why, when and how semantic technologies are used with data science. This paper is a theoretical review aiming at providing an insight into data science with semantic technologies. We characterize this research topic through a framework called DS2T helping to understand data science with semantic technologies and giving a comprehensive overview of the field through different, but complementary views. The proposed framework may be used to position research studies integrating semantic technologies with data science, compare them, understand new trends, and identify opportunities and open issues related to a given application domain. software development processes are used as illustration domain.

The work relates two initial disciplines of the Rational Unified Process (RUP), i.e. Business Modeling and Requirements Engineering, to support them in an integrated way through deductive-based formal verification using temporal logic. On the other hand, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), which should be an effective orchestration of computations and physical processes, need careful development and formal verification to ensure they influence software reliability, trustworthiness and cost in a positive way. A method for building both business models and requirements models, including their logical specifications, is proposed and presented step by step. Applying the presented concepts bridges the gap between the benefits of deductive reasoning for correctness analysis and the difficulties in obtaining complete logical specifications.

Collaborative traceability management: a multiple case study from the perspectives of organization, process, and culture

Traceability is crucial for many activities in software and systems engineering including monitoring the development progress, and proving compliance with standards. In practice, the use and maintenance of trace links are challenging as artifacts undergo constant change, and development takes place in distributed scenarios with multiple collaborating stakeholders. Although traceability management in general has been addressed in previous studies, there is a need for empirical insights into the collaborative aspects of traceability management and how it is situated in existing development contexts. The study reported in this paper aims to close this gap by investigating the relation of collaboration and traceability management, based on an understanding of characteristics of the development effort. In our multiple exploratory case study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 individuals from 15 industrial projects. We explored which challenges arise, how traceability management can support collaboration, how collaboration relates to traceability management approaches, and what characteristics of the development effort influence traceability management and collaboration. We found that practitioners struggle with the following challenges: (1) collaboration across team and tool boundaries, (2) conveying the benefits of traceability, and (3) traceability maintenance. If these challenges are addressed, we found that traceability can facilitate communication and knowledge management in distributed contexts. Moreover, there exist multiple approaches to traceability management with diverse collaboration approaches, i.e., requirements-centered, developer-driven, and mixed approaches. While traceability can be leveraged in software development with both agile and plan-driven paradigms, a certain level of rigor is needed to realize its benefits and overcome challenges.
