One of the most difficult parts in education of future software engineers is teaching how to combine software engineering hard skills (analysis and design of architecture, developing software, initial launch of software for customers) with soft skills (team work, time and resource management, communication with stakeholders of the project). Unfortunately, some universities only give theoretical basics of project management or do not even consider this part of software engineering as compulsory. In this paper we present our teaching experience of software engineering as a project-oriented course in a business-like environment. In this course we use Essence to combine the students' knowledge about software engineering projects with their experience in course projects.

Data Science with Semantic Technologies: Application to Information Systems development

ABSTRACTVarious semantic technologies such as ontologies, machine learning, or artificial intelligence-based are being used today with data science for the purpose of explaining the meaning of data, and making this explanation exploitable by computer processing. Although some quick and brief reports do exist, to the best of our knowledge, the literature lacks a detailed study reporting why, when and how semantic technologies are used with data science. This paper is a theoretical review aiming at providing an insight into data science with semantic technologies. We characterize this research topic through a framework called DS2T helping to understand data science with semantic technologies and giving a comprehensive overview of the field through different, but complementary views. The proposed framework may be used to position research studies integrating semantic technologies with data science, compare them, understand new trends, and identify opportunities and open issues related to a given application domain. software development processes are used as illustration domain.

Process diversity in software development: an industrial study

software companies need to employ state-of-the-art technologies to meet customer requirements. Owing to the complexity of contemporary software products and uncertainty concerning the budget for the required resources, companies use process-oriented quality management techniques in order to guarantee appropriate product quality. In this light, standardised quality assurance system that uses the capability maturity model integration-development (CMMI-DEV) program are incorporated into software development processes, and software companies aim to enhance productivity by acquiring CMMI-DEV certificates. In this study, an approach based on CMMI-DEV is used to develop software process diversity for an international company. The results show that the proposed software process diversity model can be used to assess and improve processes in middle-sized software companies that have identical technical frameworks and similar business structures.

Are DevOps and Automation Our Next Silver Bullet?

Fred brooks, in his well-known classic The Mythical Man-Month, already told the software engineering industry in 1975 that there are no silver bullets in gaining an order-of-magnitude improvement in software productivity.¹ He also observed that "most of the big past gains in software productivity have come from removing artificial barriers that have made the accidental tasks inordinately hard, such as severe hardware constraints, awkward programming languages, lack of machine time." The hope and goal of software development processes in orchestrating the essential and accidental software engineering and development tasks is precisely to remove artificial barriers to delivering better, faster, cheaper software to the users. Our next silver bullet seems to have emerged as automating repeatable, manual process tasks. While, on one hand, we debate how to scale agile, on the other, we run to DevOps, continuous integration, and continuous delivery tools to achieve the so-called orders of magnitude of productivity improvement.

Healthy Code Reveals the Problem and Solution

Source code reveals abstractions from two places: the problem and the solution. It's easier to design and evolve a system when you understand each of them separately before you combine them in code. With skill, it's possible to separate those concerns in the code. Declarative understanding of the abstractions is the most useful and easy to convey. However, current software development processes rarely guide developers to do this.

Background: Little is yet known about how to qualitatively analyse development processes to steer their further optimisation. Thereby, companies are often left to the expertise of third parties when performing such an analysis. Aim: We aim at elaborating a way of empirically analysing development processes on basis of 9 empirical studies we performed at our research group. Method: We analyse 9 empirical studies for commonalities in their research objectives, research methodologies, cases, and methods used to infer a set of research methodology patterns. Results: We discover and discuss three methodology patterns, which we embed into a first experience-based guideline to conduct qualitative analyses of development processes. Conclusion: Our guideline is inferred from a series of successful studies. However, since qualitative analyses always will depend on many aspects that cannot be standardised, we lay with this contribution a first, but fundamental step to be further discussed, evaluated, and extended.

In modern software engineering different software development processes serve as guidelines for solving standard set of problems in projects. But in the last 20 years the quantity of different software development processes and tendency of their authors to keep the distance from existing processes resulted in a great confusion in terms, rules and applications for project managers, software engineers and scientists. Considering that the SEMAT initiative set its goal to find the common ground for different development processes for business and academic representatives there is still no case of implementing their results to the existing software development systems. In this paper we present a solution for the implementation of SEMAT initiative to the Redmine software project management system.

To select a new software development model for a large organ- isation, a combined model of the Cynefin framework and the Adaptive cycle of resilience was created. Several scaled agile frameworks, like DAD, SAFe and LeSS were arranged in the different contexts of the combined model, using the character- istics of these contexts. Choosing a scaled agile framework can be done based on the context an organisation resides in, but this paper shows that organisations do not actually do this yet. Interviews with representatives show that the characteristics of the combined model, for example the state of mind and the decision-making approach, are not necessarily aligned. In ad- dition, the findings show that the placement of a scaled agile framework based on literature is different when the placement is done by experts in scaled agile frameworks. The main reason for the different placement is the perspective the expert uses to place the scaled agile. The background of all experts is the same, which is why future research could diversify the background of the expert to see if it leads to different results. Furthermore, future research can be focus on more scaled agile frameworks to develop the combined model.

Nowadays an important part of software development life cycle is software testing. As software and systems become more complex and integrated with other software and systems the importance of software testing becomes critical part of a successful software development process. Testing itself has a little value but for the software the testing is necessary. Well planned software testing can make mediocre software a great one whereas poorly executed testing can even harm the final product. Thus, it is important that there is well designed testing process for a software project. As every software project differ from each other the testing process can also vary from project to project. There are multiple levels, types and techniques of testing that can implemented to a testing process made for a certain software project. Creating an efficient and functional testing process can be a difficult task. In the case study of the paper it is concluded that two similar software projects of different size have multiple differences but do not force of creating two different testing process as both use the same kind development life cycle and both software projects are the same type, slot games. The major difference for testing is that as a major software project, compared to a minor one, has more requirements it is important to consider them in testing strategy and planning but not in the testing process.

Background: Implementing agile practices in software development processes promises to bring improvements in product quality and process productivity, but there are few reports of cases of failure to learn from. And more specifically, it is not always clear which practices work well in which contexts. Aims: In this paper we present the experience of TSol, a small Chilean-based software company where some agile practices were added to an already formalized process. They intended to prove that this addition resulted in improved performance. Method: We conducted a sequential explanatory strategy. First, an action research was applied implementing agile practices into the already existing process. Performance was measured in terms of the rate of rejected products in each process. Next, a survey was conducted by interviewing the development team members in order to know their opinion about the effectiveness of each of the applied agile practices. Finally, the obtained results were compared with scientific literature recommendations about agility implementation. Results: There were clear improvements in performance. However, there was agreement about the usefulness of certain practices while others were not or they were even felt as a barrier for appropriate project development. Some of these results are consistent with the literature while others are not. Conclusions: This work adds on the scarce lessons learned when agility implementation fails. Not counting on the few existing publications about failure cases of applying agility made TSol implement it in cases it was not recommended. Also, there are particular context circumstances that made TSol's results different from past experiences.
