software engineering principles: A systematic mapping study and a quantitative literature review

software engineering, a fairly recent engineering discipline, is still evolving without a wide consensus on a body of fundamental principles as in traditional engineering fields with their own long-established principles originating from physics, chemistry and mathematics. This paper reports on a systematic mapping study (SMS) that identified 30 papers and books from 1969 to January 2020, each proposing their own sets of software engineering principles (SEP). Within these studies a total of 592 SEP were proposed, these studies were reviewed and classified on the basis of four mapping questions examining publication trends, use of explicit criteria for the proposed SEP, whether authors clearly described a methodology to come up with the proposed SEP, and the applicability of SEP throughout the development process. The key finding in this study are: a) the majority of the studies were published over two decades from 1989 to 2009, and then the publication rate slowed in the following decade;b) the largest number of SEP, by far, was proposed by Davis;c) only six studies used explicit criteria to identify their proposed SEP, and the other 24 studies identified their principles based on their own analysis without traceability to a methodology or selection criteria;d) most authors did not identify which principles to use in specific contexts of the software engineering domain;e) only two studies used some of the proposed SEP throughout the software development process. This study presents a survey and an analysis of the literature on software engineering principles. The literature survey, covering a period of thirty years, has come up with 14 different papers and books, which have proposed a total of 313 distinct principles for software engineering. Our analysis of these works is carried out based on a rigorous definition of the term 'principle' and on the identification a set of explicit criteria to assess whether or not any of the proposed principles qualify as fundamental principles of software engineering. The analytical approach makes it possible to arrive at a set of 24 candidate software engineering principles which all meet the required criteria.

Ever since it emerged in the late (nineteen) sixties, the discipline of software engineering has set itself apart from other engineering disciplines in a number of ways, including: the pervasiveness of its products;the complexity of its products and processes;the criticality of its applications;the difficulty of managing its processes and estimating its costs;the volatility of its workforce;the intractability of its process lifecycles;etc. A number of principles have emerged from redent software engineering research, that have the potential to bring a measure of control to the practice of this discipline;but they have not made it into routine practice in industry. We argue that the classroom is a good place to start acquainting students with these principles, and to start getting them into the habit of adhering to them as a matter of routine practice. Ever since software engineering was born, over 40 years ago, hundreds of "fundamental principles" for software engineering have been proposed. It is hard to believe that such a young discipline-in fact, any discipline-would rest on such a large number of "fundamental" principles. A few years ago, Seguin and Abran indeed showed, through a detailed analysis of the various principles proposed in the software engineering literature during the 1970-2003 period, that many-in fact most!-of the statements proposed as "fundamental principles" could not be considered as software engineering principles. The analysis method proposed by Seguin and Abran provides, among other things, a rigorous definition of term principle along with a set of criteria allowing to verify whether or not a statement is a software engineering principle. In this paper, we apply this method to the agile principles. More specifically, we examine the principles proposed by the Agile Manifesto as well as those from three well-known agile methods: XP, Scrum, and DSDM. Our analysis results show that many of the statements proposed as agile principles are in fact also software engineering principles.

The swift mutative nature of digital evidence generally makes it open to challenge from usually the disadvantaged party during an incident proceeding. The fairness of the eventual ruling passed, after considering evidence, to the involved parties is important. This brings about the meticulousness with which legal systems admit digital evidence into the facts required to decide lawsuits. In response, digital forensics practitioners employ standardized methodologies that stress and guide the preservation of the integrity of digital evidence. Validation of software used at various phases of a digital forensic investigation is an important procedure within such methodologies. This paper explores the possibility of demonstrating the reliability of digital forensics software by the methodology with which they were developed. Various software engineering principles are analyzed for strengths and limitations, to examine how reliable the evidence produced by software that implement such principle may be regarded. The DESMET feature analysis and benchmarking evaluation methods are proposed to determine the most appropriate set of software development principles for digital forensics tools, as far as ensuring their non-damaging interactions with evidence is concerned. The paper explains the benefits, limitations and concepts behind the feasibility of this tool validation technique, as the actual evaluations and demonstration are not yet in place.

By seamlessly integrating everyday objects and by changing the way we interact with our surroundings, Internet of Things (IoT) is drastically improving the life quality of households and enhancing the productivity of businesses. Given the unique IoT characteristics, IoT applications have emerged distinctively from the mainstream application types. Inspired by the outlook of a programmable world, we further foresee an IoT-native trend in designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining software systems. However, although the challenges of IoT software projects are frequently discussed, addressing those challenges are still in the "crossing the chasm" period. By participating in a few various IoT projects, we gradually distilled three fundamental principles for engineering IoT-native software systems, such as just enough, just in time, and just for "me". These principles target the challenges that are associated with the most typical features of IoT environments, ranging from resource limits to technology heterogeneity of IoT devices. We expect this research to trigger dedicated efforts, techniques and theories for the topic IoT-native software engineering.

Enhancing comprehensibility of software clustering results

As requirements of organisations change, so do the software systems within them. When changes are carried out under tough deadlines, software developers often do not follow software engineering principles, which results in deteriorated structure of the software. A badly structured system is difficult to understand for further changes. To improve structure, re-modularisation may be carried out. Clustering techniques have been used to facilitate automatic re-modularisation. However, clusters produced by clustering algorithms are difficult to comprehend unless they are labelled appropriately. Manual assignment of labels is tiresome, thus efforts should be made towards automatic cluster label assignment. In this study, the authors focus on facilitating comprehension of software clustering results by automatically assigning meaningful labels to clusters. To assign labels, the authors use term weighting schemes borrowed from the domain of information retrieval and text categorisation. Although some term weighting schemes have been used by researchers for software cluster labelling, there is a need to analyse the term weighting schemes and related issues to identify the strengths and weaknesses of these schemes for software cluster labelling. In this context, the authors analyse the behaviour of seven well-known term weighting schemes. Also, they perform the experiments on five software systems to identify software characteristics which affect the labelling behaviour of the term weighting schemes.

Integrating multiple and diverse abstract knowledge types in real-time embedded systems

Designers of large-scale real-time systems are increasingly turning to knowledge-based techniques in order to solve complex problems. This paper identifies three essential needs to support the implementation of these systems: first, the need to provide a variety of knowledge-based components that can be used to model the diverse expert domains being encountered;second, the need to provide the user with the means of creating multiple independent instances of the knowledge-based components;and third, the need to provide an integrating environment in which the knowledge-based instances may be controlled. This paper uses ideas derived from the concept of abstract data types and recommends the construction of a library of diverse knowledge-based components, called abstract knowledge types, and that multiple instances of the abstract knowledge types be integrated and controlled using a blackboard architecture. A prototype component library and a blackboard have been implemented in Ada in order to take advantage of a real-time language which supports software engineering principles through a well defined and enforced standard. The use of abstract knowledge types gives a uniform software engineered approach to the development and integration of both conventional and knowledge-based components.

Social media provide a steady diet of dire warnings that artificial intelligence (AI) will make software engineering (SE) irrelevant or obsolete. To the contrary, the engineering discipline of software is rich and robust;it encompasses the full scope of software design, development, deployment, and practical use;and it has regularly assimilated radical new offerings from AI. Current AI innovations such as machine learning, large language models (LLMs) and generative AI will offer new opportunities to extend the models and methods of SE. They may automate some routine development processes, and they will bring new kinds of components and architectures. If we're fortunate they may force SE to rethink what we mean by correctness and reliability. They will not, however, render SE irrelevant.

A reverse‐engineering approach to subsystem structure identification

Reverse‐engineering is the process of extracting system abstractions and design information out of existing software systems. This process involves the identification of software artefacts in a particular subject system, the exploration of how these artefacts interact with one another, and their aggregation to form more abstract system representations that facilitate program understanding. This paper describes our approach to creating higher‐level abstract representations of a subject system, which involves the identification of related components and dependencies, the construction of layered subsystem structures, and the computation of exact interfaces among subsystems. We show how top‐down decompositions of a subject system can be (re)constructed via bottom‐up subsystem composition. This process involves identifying groups of building blocks (e.g., variables, procedures, modules, and subsystems) using composition operations based on software engineering principles such as low coupling and high cohesion. The result is an architecture of layered subsystem structures. The structures are manipulated and recorded using the Rigi system, which consists of a distributed graph editor and a parsing system with a central repository. The editor provides graph filters and clustering operations to build and explore subsystem hierarchies interactively. The paper concludes with a detailed, step‐by‐step analysis of a 30‐module software system using Rigi. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
