yPBL: An Active, Collaborative and Project-Based Learning Methodology in the Domain of software engineering

software engineers face the challenge of working in a very dynamic and rapidly evolving context requiring the continuous acquisition of knowledge with new software technologies, paradigms, approaches and methodologies. To address these needs, this paper proposes an active, collaborative and project-based learning methodology that is well suited to the software engineering (SE) domain. The yPBL methodology is defined as a specialization of a SE process named 2TUP or "y" that is mainly characterized by the separation of concerns between the requirements and constraints of a software product and the technologies used during its design and development. This SE process has been specialized to define project-based learning courses and the required activities allowing the research, discovery, acquisition, transmission and application of knowledge by the learners following actively and collaboratively the software product engineering process. The yPBL methodology can be applied to standard classroom courses as well as to geographically distributed courses involving students and instructors as well as professionals that need to update or acquire new SE knowledge. In this paper the yPBL methodology is formally specified using the Unified Modelling Language (UML). This methodology is illustrated and evaluated by a case study involving students and instructors of a classroom based software engineering and service-oriented computing course at the INSA engineering School in Toulouse, France.

The challenge to transfer HCI suggested values, and practices to software engineering (SE) processes is not only persisting, but also systemic. Notable contributions from both fields have attempted to isolate and close the gaps between the HCI and SE, with the goal of making software products most usable. Using a scoping study approach, this article reviews notable contributions on the discourse and identifies the gaps, and shows areas that require more research attentions.

Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Perform empirical studies in a real context is very difficult due to various obstacles. An interesting alternative is perform empirical studies in an educational context using students as subjects and share the results with the academia and the industry. This paper describes a case study with two teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real customer. In this study we used a model based on Function Points Analysis (FPA) to estimate the size and complexity of software system.

Mobile devices and mobile applications have a significant effect on the present and on the future of the software industry. The diversity of mobile platforms necessitates the development of the same mobile application for all major mobile platforms, which requires considerable development effort. Mobile application developers are multiplatform developers, but they prioritize the platforms, therefore, not all platforms are equally important for them. Appropriate methods, processes and tools are required to support the development in order to achieve better productivity. The main motivation of our research activity is to provide a method, which increases the development productivity and the quality of the applications and also reduces the time to market. The paper discusses our model-driven results on the field of multi-mobile platform development.

Today's software development challenges require learning teams that can continuously apply new engineering and management practices, new and complex technical skills, cross-functional skills, and experiential lessons learned. The pressure of delivering working software often forces software teams to sacrifice learning-focused practices. Effective learning under pressure involves conscious efforts to implement original agile practices such as retrospectives and adapted strategies such as learning spikes. Teams, their management, and customers must all recognize the importance of creating learning teams as the key to braving the erratic climates and uncharted territories of future software development.

Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Perform empirical studies in a real context is very difficult due to various obstacles, so, we intend to create a stable environment that allows us to perform reliably empirical studies with students. This paper describes a case study with 104 students grouped in seven teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real costumer. In this study we used a model based on Use Case Points (UCP) to estimate the resources needed to develop a software system.

The situational factors that affect the software development process: Towards a comprehensive reference framework

Context: An optimal software development process is regarded as being dependent on the situational characteristics of individual software development settings. Such characteristics include the nature of the application(s) under development, team size, requirements volatility and personnel experience. However, no comprehensive reference framework of the situational factors affecting the software development process is presently available. Objective: The absence of such a comprehensive reference framework of the situational factors affecting the software development process is problematic not just because it inhibits our ability to optimise the software development process, but perhaps more importantly, because it potentially undermines our capacity to ascertain the key constraints and characteristics of a software development setting. Method: To address this deficiency, we have consolidated a substantial body of related research into an initial reference framework of the situational factors affecting the software development process. To support the data consolidation, we have applied rigorous data coding techniques from Grounded Theory and we believe that the resulting framework represents an important contribution to the software engineering field of knowledge. Results: The resulting reference framework of situational factors consists of eight classifications and 44 factors that inform the software process. We believe that the situational factor reference framework presented herein represents a sound initial reference framework for the key situational elements affecting the software process definition. Conclusion: In addition to providing a useful reference listing for the research community and for committees engaged in the development of standards, the reference framework also provides support for practitioners who are challenged with defining and maintaining software development processes. Coping with Existing Systems in Information Systems Development

Determining how to cope with existing systems is an important issue for information systems development (ISD). In this paper, we investigate how well different ISD patterns are suited for coping with existing systems. Empirical results, gathered from three software development projects undertaken by a financial institution, suggest propositions regarding how ISD patterns and existing systems affect the characteristics of objective ISD complexity, which in turn determine overall experienced complexity. Existing systems increase complexity due to conflicting interdependencies, but ISD patterns that reduce this complexity, such as those that employ bottom-up or concurrent consideration patterns, are best suited for coping with existing systems. In contrast, top-down and iterative focusing patterns, as classically used in new development, increase the complexity associated with conflicting interdependency, which makes them particularly unsuited for coping with existing systems in ISD.

This article describes six key ways professional software developers do this using examples from a video study of professional developers designing at a whiteboard.
