Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Within this PhD thesis we will develop a framework of a consistent process for involving students as subjects of empirical studies of software engineering. In concrete, our experiences with software development teams composed of students will analyze how RUP (Rational Unified process) processes can be compliant with the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), namely in the context of MLs (maturity levels) 2 and 3. Additionally, we will also analyze the influence of project management tools to improve the process maturity of the teams. Our final goal of carrying out empirical studies with students is to understand its validity when compared with the corresponding studies in real industrial settings.

software architecture reviews are effective in identifying potential problems in architectures, however, are expensive, time-consuming, and generally rely on extensive architecture documentation. An architecture review that accommodates projects with very short development cycles, minimal documentation, or frequently changing requirements could be useful if it identifies important architectural issues. We developed a useful, inexpensive architecture review method that uses the architecture patterns in a system to identify important issues in the achievement of quality attributes. The effectiveness of test-driven development: an industrial case study

Test-driven development (TDD) is a software development practice, where test cases are incrementally written before implementing the production code. This paper presents the results of a multi-case study investigating the effectiveness of TDD within an industrial environment. Three comparable medium-sized projects were observed during their development cycle. Two projects were driven without TDD practice, while the third one introduced TDD into the development process. The effectiveness of TDD was expressed in terms of external code quality, productivity, and maintainability. Our results indicate that the TDD developers produced higher quality code that is easier to maintain, although we did observe a reduction in productivity.

A software product line is a set of software-intensive systems sharing a common, managed set of features, developed from reusable core assets and incorporating variations to derive product variants. This involves identifying commonality and variability in the product family and implementing shared artifacts while preserving the ability to implement required variability. software development organizations that recognize market opportunities for products that share a significant number of common elements, but that also exhibit variations, can reap significant economic benefits with SPLE. Agile methods emphasize improvisation over conventional development approaches. These methods focus on quick development in an uncertain, ill-understood environment in which requirements rapidly evolve. These methods also view people, rather than formal documentation, as a project's most important element.

Underdevelopment is novel reusable labware for computer science (CS) core curriculum. This labware contains a relatively inexpensive portable Wireless Sensor Network kit in a Box (WinBox), along with a variety of predesigned labs ranging from fundamental to advanced concepts in CS core curriculum. Exemplary projects are depicted to show how this WinBox can be reused in several CS core courses. With its portability, the WinBox makes feasible to offer on-line lab intensive courses. Much of our effort is made on inculcating CS students in greening computing due to its increasing importance. By bringing green computing experience to students and instructors through the hands-on projects, we aim to promote students' innovation in pervasive green computing. This pedagogical model harnesses a wide range of wireless hardware/software co-design skills in CS education to address a need in embedded system workforces. This affordable WinBox renders an educational resource for budget limited institutions.

This paper describes an innovative product-oriented and software engineering process-guided Computer Science (CS) capstone project model for green smart energy application with aportable and inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) kit in a Box (WinBox). The project is infused with ZigBee wireless technology and requires a wide range of CS and software engineering knowledge elements. Students will gain experience to tie their knowledge and skills learned in the CS discipline to analyze, design, and develop deliverable real world oriented product prototypes, and will be motivated to catch up with emerging technologies in "learning by doing" and be promoted for creativity and life-long learning.

The new generation of open networked IT systems poses particular challenges to software engineering due to their evolving nature and their high quality requirements. In particular, the management of service oriented systems requires the integration of perspectives from IT management, software engineering and systems operation and a systematic way to handle changes. In this paper we will present the core ideas of Living Models - a novel paradigm of model-based development, management and operation of evolving service oriented systems. A core concern of Living Models is to support the cooperation of stakeholders from IT management, software engineering and systems operation by providing appropriate model-based abstractions and the fostering of interdependencies. Based on this idea the running services together with their modelling environments constitute the basic unit of quality management and evolution. Living Models provides a coherent view of the quality status of the system (integrating the perspectives of all stakeholders) which evolves together with the running systems. This comes along with a software engineering process in which change is a first-class citizen.

The Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) is a 4.3-meter astronomical research telescope being built in northern Arizona as a partnership between Discovery Communications and Lowell Observatory. We present an overview of the current status of the project software effort, including the iterative development process ( including planning, requirements management and traceability, design, code, test, issue tracking, and version control), our experience with management and design techniques and tools the team uses that support the effort, key features of the component-based architectural design, and implementation examples that leverage new LabVIEW-based technologies.
