Empirical investigation towards the effectiveness of Test First programming

The Test First (TF) programming, which is based on an iterative process of "setting up test cases, implementing the functionality, and having all test cases passed", has been put forward for decades, however knowledge of the evidence of the Test First programming's success is limited. This paper describes a controlled experiment that investigated the distinctions between the effectiveness of Test First and that of Test Last (TL) (the traditional approach). The experimental results showed that Test First teams spent a larger percentage of time on testing. The achievable minimum external quality of delivered software applications increased with the percentage of time spent on testing regardless of the testing strategy (TF or TL) applied, although there does not exist a linear correlation between them. With four years' data, it is also found that a strong linear correlation between the amount of effort spent on testing and coding in Test First teams, while this phenomenon was not observed in Test Last teams. Published work in the IT services area is generally centered on the description of management best practices or specific technological issues. There is a lack of empirical studies the relationship among service level agreements (the quality parameters of service agreed between customer and provider) and the required IT parts to deliver IT services. In the ITIL framework, the service level agreements process is fully described, albeit without a formal representation. Enterprise Architecture frameworks provide a mean for formal description of IT and business parts of organizations and their interrelationships, however without reference to service level agreements. In this research, we intend to derive a formal specification of service level agreements by integrating IT Services Management within an Enterprise Architecture framework. This integration will facilitate the provision of a business-aligned automatic checking of compliance between agreed and provided services.

Design by Contract (DBC) is an oft-cited, but rarely followed, programming practice that focuses on writing formal specifications first, and writing code that fulfills those specifications second. The development of static analysis tools over the past several years has made it possible to fully embrace DBC in Java systems by writing, type checking, and consistency checking rich behavioral specifications for Java before writing any code. This paper discusses a DEC-based, verification-centric software development process for Java that integrates the Business Object Notation (BON), the Java Modeling Language, and several associated tools including the BON compiler BONC, the ESC/Java2 static checker, a runtime assertion checker, and a specification-based unit test generator. This verification-centric process, reinforced by its rich open source tool support, is one of the most advanced, concrete, open, practical, and usable processes available today for rigorously designing and developing software systems.

As a direct implication, organizations find it more difficult to achieve the desired product quality. process improvement models are used to improve product quality. In recent years the combination of different improvement models is increasing. The main challenge in these environments is the interoperability of chosen models. An incorrect integration approach diminishes efficiency and effectiveness on applying these models. The general objective of this thesis is to identify principles and process characteristics for designing a system of processes at the architectural level. As a result of this research work, an improved understanding of improvement models interoperability is expected by identifying the technical and structural relationships between processes that will help architecting a system of processes.

software development in highly variable domains constrained by tight regulations and with many business concepts involved results in hard to deliver and maintain applications, due to the complexity of dealing with the large number of concepts provided by the different parties and system involved in the process. One way to tackle these problems is thru combining software product lines and model-driven software development supported by ontologies. software product lines and model-driven approaches would promote reuse on the software artifacts and, if supported by an ontological layer, those artifacts would be domain-validated. We intend to create a new conceptual framework for software development with domain validated models in highly variable domains. To define such a framework we will propose a model that relates several dimensions and areas of software development thru time and abstraction levels. This model would guarantee to the software house traceability of components, domain validated artifacts, easy to maintain and reusable components, due to the relations and mappings we propose to establish in the conceptual framework, between the software artifacts and the ontology.

Raising the level of abstraction for software engineers to write applications is still an undergoing issue. So, models will most likely become the dominant artifact in the development of software. However, models are nothing without the framing of a methodology, like the software factories methodology, which includes the software product lines approach. In the context of software product lines, model-driven development imposes the structuring of the software development process around models adequate to each one of the moments within the software supply chain. The different moments are the different stages that comprise different development teams, as well as the target user of the different software family members. This multistage process is a powerful vision of software development in general when compared with the current software development processes' state-of-the-art and this is the vision that feeds the Ph.D. work presented in this paper. This work is concerned with the transformations that models must suffer in the particular context of software product lines development, inside each stage and in between stages.

The impact of employee participation on the use of an electronic process guide: A longitudinal case study

Many software companies disseminate process knowledge through electronic process guides. A common problem with such guides is that they are not used. Through a case study, we investigated how participation in creating an electronic process guide, through process workshops, influenced the use of the guide. We studied developer and project manager usage with respect to three factors: frequency of use, used functionality, and reported advantages and disadvantages. We collected data from three rounds of interviews and 19 months of usage logs in a longitudinal study in a medium-size software company. Employees who participated in process workshops showed a higher degree of usage, used a larger number of functions, and expressed more advantages and disadvantages than those not involved. Our study suggests that employee participation has a long-term positive effect on electronic process guide usage.

Towards software process patterns: An empirical analysis of the behavior of student teams

Traditional software engineering processes are composed of practices defined by roles, activities and artifacts. software developers have their own understanding of practices and their own ways of implementing them, which could result in variations in software development practices. This paper presents an empirical study based on six teams of five students each, involving three different projects. Their process practices are monitored by time slips based on the effort expended on various process-related activities. This study introduces a new 3-pole graphical representation to represent the process patterns of effort expended on the various discipline activities. The purpose of this study is to quantify activity patterns in the actual process, which in turn demonstrates the variability of process performance. This empirical study provides three examples of patterns based on three empirical axes (engineering, coding and V&V). The idea behind this research is to make developers aware that there is wide variability in the actual process, and that process assessments might be weakly related to actual process activities. This study suggests that in-process monitoring is required to control the process activities. In-process monitoring is likely to provide causal information between the actual process activities and the quality of the implemented components. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Computer and videogames have a huge potential to facilitate learning because they easily capture students' attention. However, we can't just throw some math into a game and call it educational, nor can we call it entertainment when a talking animal gives the lesson while the student solves silly puzzles. In the words of literature professor Henry Jenkins, we need to "move beyond the current state of edutainment products which combine the entertainment value of a bad lecture with the educational value of a bad game." Point-and-click adventure games like the Monkey Island or King's Quest sagas have all, the ingredients needed to achieve this balance between content delivery and entertainment.

The case for frame-based software engineering

A frame is an archetype—a model from which all similar things are made. Frame technology can synthesize any information structure (such as a program) from machine-adaptable frames. The author contrasts FT with object-oriented classes. By canonically defining each information structure in terms of its unique properties, frames avoid the complexities induced by code-level redundancies. Frames also solve the problem of how to regenerate domain-specific-language programs without destroying prior customizations. The article includes evidence of FT's efficacy, its impact on software's life cycle, elements of frame design, and an easy way to get started.
