For a computer science program in which students are required to complete one course in software engineering, it is impossible to create a polished finished product for a project of any significant size that can demonstrate all the phases of the project. This can be solved by requiring students to complete a full set of requirements and specifications. Develop design documents for only a subset of the requirements and an even more limited implementation of the design documents. The artifacts from such a class can then be used as the foundation for a senior capstone design course. This allows for the development of skills that are directly needed in the real world, in which a team is given a set of requirements to implement, or is assigned to an existing project to continue its development, or is assigned to a project team that maintains existing code. Anticipated skills developed by the student by such a capstone project are: the ability to read and understand requirements and specifications, the ability to understand preexisting designs and the design decisions that contributed to the design, the ability to understand existing code, the ability to enhance the code to complete a project based on the requirements, and the ability to evaluate preexisting documentation. This paper will describe such a software engineering class project that involved a client from another academic department to develop a non-trivial internet based software application, which supported the department's scheduling of faculty to classes, using an internet based web service to solve the linear programming problem that resulted from the constraints of the problem. The paper will then discuss the subsequent senior design project and implementation that followed.

Nowadays, standards are the basis in various industries even in the software industry. There are diverse standards for software engineering (e.g. ISO/IEC 12207 series named Systems and software engineering -- software life cycle processes). Most of the software engineering students are required to submit a senior project before graduating. Most students' inability to complete their project can be caused by their lack of time management and poor scheduling in their life. The objective of this study was to raise the project completion rate by using the international standard ISO/IEC 29110 series named software engineering Lifecycle profiles for Very Small Entities (VSEs). The research environment was made up of 2 groups of students: the first group was a study group of students who were studying Basic profile of ISO/IEC 29110 at the same time of the senior project and the second group was a group of students who had not taken that course. There was an internal tool created to demonstrate in the classroom called PAPM29110 that was used to look at the percentage of the on-time completion of the projects compared with the late projects. The preliminary results showed that the second group of students who had not taken the ISO/IEC 29110 course finished their project much later than the first group of students who applied their knowledge gained from ISO/IEC 29110. In addition, a significant statistic method named Chi Square was used to testify the differences of benefits between studying ISO/IEC 29110 and not studying ISO/IEC 29110 at the end of the demonstration.

As a practice-oriented discipline, software engineering (SE) is most effectively taught by using a variety of hands-on experiences. Team-based projects where students can practice their technical and soft skills are a key feature of many software engineering courses aimed to prepare students for the realities of industrial software development. Current research indicates that projects offered in SE courses should have a close connection to the real world, be large scale and complex. On the one hand, students should be able to relate to the requirements and understand them without spending much time acquiring domain knowledge. On the other hand, students should be exposed to changing and evolving requirements, which is one of the main challenges of real-world software projects. software projects should be large enough and have enough features to engage all members of the student team while enabling them to practice some degree of specialization and experience the advantages and challenges of teamwork. software projects should be rich enough to allow students practice all previously acquired SE concepts, bring together knowledge from other specialized CS disciplines, and apply a number of modem tools and technologies. One of the most effective ways to learn SE is to expose students to an environment that resembles an industrial setting as much as possible. As a part of an academic program, SE courses can achieve this objective by offering students a balanced combination of three components: teamwork involving up-to-date technology grounded in a solid theoretical foundation. Instructors in SE courses are uniquely positioned to help maintain this balance by simultaneously playing four roles described below. As a customer who contracts a student team to implement a particular project, the instructor may provide a verbal or written description of the project. Cybernetics of Conflict Within Multi-Partner Technology and software engineering Programmes

Large technology and software engineering programmes, such as enterprise system programmes, are increasingly implemented through a mixture of customer and specialist third-party resources. These multi-partner working environments can be thought of as a complex social system, which oftentimes experience various forms of conflict. This can be due to competing objectives and priorities of the various organizations, along with incompatibilities of team members within the work-based social network of the implementation programme. If not brought under control, conflict can lead to complex emergent behaviours and dynamics within the wider social network, which can severely impact the likelihood of successful programme implementation of these software-intensive systems. Using social network analysis and thematic coding analysis within a case study, we show that the project management of complex software-intensive implementations requires considerable focus on control and communication across the programme-wide social network of team members, which we represent as a cybernetic system. A conceptual framework has been developed that extends extant literature around conflict in teams by framing the individual projects and the overall programme-wide implementation as cybernetic systems. The conceptual framework illustrates how a cybernetics approach to conflict within enterprise system implementations, can provide new insights into how conflict develops within project teams. Finally, we argue that the cybernetic approach allows us to develop project management interventions to mitigate the risk of conflict development, or control and regulate conflict once it has developed. We conclude by setting the agenda for future research on how conflict can be controlled within the implementation of software-intensive systems, such as enterprise systems.

A business decision to abort projects with little or no chance at succeeding should be made as early as possible. The research on success of software engineering projects is fragmented and unorganized, which makes anticipating outcomes difficult and possibly error prone. This short paper offers a preliminary insight into success factors related to project outcomes that can be found at the midpoint of the development;projects We conducted a comparative case study where eight software development;projects used the waterfall development method and four projects agile software development, approaches as their primary development, vehicle. When supervising software engineering team projects, having all team members contribute actively to the project is often a challenge. Most often than not, there will be teams having some members with limited or no contribution. Thus one of the key roles of a team leader and academic supervisor are to monitor who is contributing and who is falling behind. Assessing the progress information of each team member becomes vital. This is to introduce strategies that encourages ensure every member is contributing effectively and efficiently in a timely manner. This paper proposes a rubric solution that assesses the progress information of each team member and provides a formative performance feedback on how each member is contributing to the project. This will enable each team member to reflect on his or her performance, and hopefully self-regulate and put in the necessary contribution. At the same time, this will assist the team leader and academic supervisor in monitoring the team member.

This paper presents the design of the Functional Geospatial Information System (FunGIS), which is aimed at providing a comprehensive GIS service to disabled people. FunGIS provides features for fast, easy access to information and aids users find what they want and information querying. FunGIS enhances the information content for disabled people and the performance of the system in a comprehensive manner so that a) the possibility of integrating the system with live, working information sources and b) reduced information maintenance can be achieved. The technology and implementation considerations for FunGIS, performance evaluation and the lessons learnt have also been provided in this paper. Such systems are extremely useful in the African context for managing disabled people in that locations of important entities such as toilets, restaurants, fuel stations can be easily identified and become easily navigatable. The linguistics aids in FunGIS would provide further assistance in an Africa, where disparate people live in diverse areas.

Conflict Propagation Within Large Technology and software engineering Programmes: A Multi-Partner Enterprise System Implementation as Case Study

Enterprise system implementations are increasingly outsourced to multiple third-party service providers. These multi-partner technology and software engineering programmes are usually organized through project teams that align to the functional areas of the software. Cognitive, occupational and personal differences between members of project teams increases the potential for conflict, which in extreme cases may propagate throughout the entire social network of the programme. Using social network analysis and thematic coding analysis, within a single case study, new insights are provided into the development of conflict within and between individual project teams of large technology and software programmes, such as those seen within enterprise system implementations. A conceptual framework has been developed that builds on existing literature around conflict in groups, to explore how task, process and relationship conflict can develop in large enterprise system implementations. The conceptual framework illustrates how conflict, once developed, can propagate throughout the social network of the wider programme. Finally, we argue that high-conflict organizations, such as the temporary multi-partner implementation team that forms to deliver large technology and software programmes, have a tendency to contain competing networks, which actively promotes conflict. We conclude by setting the agenda for further research on how we may contain the spread of conflict once it has developed within technology and software engineering programme environments.
