software performance engineering (SPE) provides an approach to constructing systems to meet performance objectives. This paper illustrates the application of SPE to an example with some real-time properties and demonstrates how to compare performance characteristics of design alternatives. We show how SPE can be integrated with design methods and demonstrate that performance requirements can be achieved without sacrificing other desirable design qualities such as understandability, maintainability, and reusability.

in order to allow software designers to determine the performance of software during design, Connie Smith has introduced the concept of software performance engineering (SPE). The idea is to bring performance evaluation into the software design process. Several approaches have been proposed to provide such techniques. Some of them propose to derive from a UML (Unified Modeling Language) model a performance model. UML2SAN is one of the most recent works in SPE, that permits to generate a performance model (SAN: Stochastic Automata Network) from UML specifications. In this paper, we verify the convenience of UML2SAN by predicting deadlock of transfer funds in a banking system during the design phase.

software performance engineering (SPE) is about developing software systems that meet performance requirements. It is a proactive approach that uses quantitative techniques to predict the performance of software early in design to identify viable options and eliminate unsatisfactory ones before implementation begins. Despite its effectiveness, performance problems continue to occur. This position paper examines the evolution of SPE. It often helps to re-examine history to see if it yields insights into the future. It concludes with some thoughts about future directions.

performance related problems are becoming more and more strategic in the software development, especially recently with the advent of Web Services and related business-oriented composition techniques (software as a service, Web 2.0, orchestration, choreography, etc.). In particular, an early integration of performance specifications in the SDP has been recognized during the last few years as an effective approach to improve the overall quality of a software. The goal of our work is the definition of a software development process that integrates performance evaluation and prediction. The software performance engineering development process (SPEDP) we specify is focused on performance, which plays a key role driving the software development process, thus implementing a performance/QoS-driven (software) development process. More specifically, in this paper our aim is to formally define the SPEDP design process, posing particular interest on the basis, on the first step of SPEDP, the software/system architecture design, modeling and/or representation. We define both the diagrams to use and show how to model the structure of the software architecture, its behavior and performance requirements. This is the first mandatory step for the automation of the SPEDP into a specific tool, which we have partially implemented as a performance plug-in for ArgoUML, Argoperformance.

This paper introduces Speedcode, an online programming platform that aims to improve the accessibility of software performance-engineering education. At its core, Speedcode provides a platform that lets users gain hands-on experience in software performance engineering and parallel programming by completing short programming exercises. Speedcode challenges users to develop fast multicore solutions for short programming problems and evaluates their code's performance and scalability in a quiesced cloud environment. Speedcode supports parallel programming using OpenCilk, task-parallel computing platform that is open-source and easy to program, teach and use for research. Speedcode aims to reduce barriers to learning and teaching software performance engineering. It allows users to run and evaluate their code on modern multicore machines from their own computer without installing any software. This provides users an easy introduction to the topic, and enables teachers to more easily incorporate lessons on software performance engineering into their courses without incurring the onerous overhead of needing to setup computing environments for their students.

It is not an overstatement to say that the gap between software design and performance evaluation techniques has caused the misuse of the last ones by software engineers. The UML profile for schedulability, performance and time [13] arose from the intention to close both fields, software engineering and performance analysis. Nevertheless the gap remains, since it is difficult for software engineers to devise which parts of their designs are suitable to represent performance requirements. The profile has started to study this problem from a scenarios viewpoint. In this work, we explore other viewpoints to deal with performance requirements at software design level.

In many software development projects, attention is only paid to performance concerns after functional testing, when it usually too late to remedy disabling performance problems. Early attention to performance concerns and early planning of performance requirements and performance testing can prevent debacles like the early rollout of healthcare. gov while addressing cross-cutting concerns such as scalability, reliability and, security. performance engineering methods may be integrated into all phases of the software lifecycle, from the conception of a system to requirements specification, architecture, testing, and finally to production. performance expectations can be managed by carefully specifying performance requirements. Reviewing the architecture of a system before design and implementation take place reduces the risk of designing a system that contains inherent performance vice. performance modeling can be used to justify architectural and design decisions and to plan performance tests. The outputs of such performance tests enable us able to identify concurrent programming and other issues that would not be apparent in unit testing. Finally, risk is mitigated by avoiding design antipatterns that undermine scalability and performance.

software reverse engineering can benefit from software performance engineering (SPE) techniques and vice versa. Reverse engineering's system artifacts satisfy SPE's need for a sequence of a software system in order to quantitatively analyze the system's performance characteristics. The code profiling tools used in software performance engineering can assist reverse engineering in understanding the behavior of the source code of a system. The aim of this workshop is to gather together researchers and practitioners working in the area of software performance engineering with an emphasis on code optimization and root cause analysis. We are interested in investigating how performance analysis can benefit from reverse engineering techniques. The objective of the workshop is to find common case studies and compare existing techniques. This workshop will be the first inclusion of this important industrial relevant topic within the software reverse engineering community. We aim to set up a forum for exchanging experiences, discussing solutions, and exploring new ideas.
