Using the DEMO methodology for modeling open source software development processes

Context: Open source software development (OSSD) process modeling has received increasing interest in recent years. These efforts aim to identify common elements in the development process between multiple open source software (OSS) projects. However, the complexity inherent to OSSD process modeling puts significant demands on the modeling language. Objective: In this paper, we propose that the Design and Engineering Methodology for Organizations (DEMO) may provide an interesting alternative to develop OSSD process models. DEMO exhibits two unique features within the context of OSSD process modeling. First, DEMO analyzes processes at the ontological level and provides high-level process descriptions, instead of focusing on the implementation level. Second, DEMO studies the communication patterns between human actors, instead of the sequences in which activities are performed. Method: We investigate the feasibility of using DEMO to construct OSSD process models by means of a case study. DEMO models were constructed to describe the NetBeans Requirements and Release process. In addition, the quality of these DEMO models was evaluated using a quality framework for conceptual modeling. Results: Our results showed that our DEMO models exhibited a high level of abstraction, thereby reducing the complexity of the OSSD process models. In addition, the evaluation of the models developed in this paper by using the quality framework for conceptual modeling showed that the models were of high quality. Conclusions: We have shown that the DEMO methodology can be successfully used to model OSSD processes and to obtain abstract and high-quality OSSD process models. However, given some potential drawbacks with respect to understandability and implementability, we primarily propose the use of DEMO within OSSD process modeling as an analysis tool that should be complemented with other techniques and models for communication and reenactment purposes. Knowledge plays a key role in software process modeling. However knowledge management mechanism is still less discussed, this paper introduces an agent-based mechanism for knowledge sharing in the workflow-based cooperative software process modeling environment. It first discusses the sharing knowledge elements of developing procedure, presents the knowledge repository model and knowledge flow based knowledge communication mechanism, and then an agent based implementation of knowledge management is introduced in the last of this paper.

A deviation management system for handling software process enactment evolution

An important problem encountered in process-centered software Engineering Environments (PSEE) is that software development processes are subject to permanent evolution during enactment. Without managing evolution, PSEEs are condemned to fail in being adopted in software industry. This article presents an original approach to process enactment evolution, based on formal management of process deviations. Deviations are defined as operations that violate process constraints. Once a deviation is detected, a deviation-tolerance model attached to the preset process is used to decide whether to accept or to reject the deviation.

It is hard to adopt a simulation technology because of the difficulty in developing a simulation model. In order to resolve the difficulty, we consider the following issues: reducing the cost to develop a simulation model, reducing the simulation model complexity, and resolving the lack of historical data. We propose an approach to deriving a simulation model from a descriptive process model and widely adopted analytical models. We provide a method to develop simulation models and a tool environment to support the method. We applied our approach in developing the simulation model for a government project. Our approach resolves the issues by the transformation algorithms, the hierarchical and modularized modeling properties of UML and (Discrete Event System Specification) DEVS, and widely adopted analytical models.

software process improvement has been a focus of industry for many years. To assist with the implementation of process improvement, we provide an approach to recover process enactment data. The goal of our method is to uncover the actual process used and thereby provide evidence for improving the quality of a planned software process that is followed by an organization in the future. The recovered process model (or patterns) is presented at the same level of abstraction as the planned process model. This allows an easy and clear method to identify the distance between a planned process model and the actual project enactment. We investigate the enactment of a defined software process model from the view of understanding the opportunity for process model improvement from the viewpoint of the project managers in the context of a small software development organization. We collected data from one of our collaboration organizations and then applied our method to a case study. The consistencies between a planned process model and the project enactment were measured. The outcomes of our method provide precise information including qualitative and quantitative data to assist project managers with process improvement in future practice. The main contribution of our work is to provide a novel approach to assist software process improvement by recovering a model from process enactment data.

The lack of flexibility in software process modeling is an important drawback pointed out as the main cause for the low adoption of process-centered software Engineering Environments (PSEEs). The Object Management Group (OMG) has been working on the software process Engineering Meta-model (SPEM) in order to provide a uniform object-oriented meta-model for building software process models, like the Rational Unified process (RUP). Nevertheless, the SPEM neither takes into account flexibility aspects nor provides a flexibility meta-model for derived software process models. This paper proposes a flexibility meta-model for building flexible SPEM-based software process models. SPEM compliant PSEEs that implement the proposed meta-model will provide the ability to build flexible software process models, and to associate distinct flexible mechanisms to their corresponding modeling elements.

This paper describes a method for organizations to perform process modeling in a decentralized and concurrent manner. The approach is based on the idea that modeling organizations' processes can be performed by individuals actually performing the processes. Instead of having a central and devoted group of people to analyze, understand, model and improve processes, real performers are held responsible to model and improve their own processes concurrently. The paper also summarizes the lessons learned by application of the method in two organizations.

software process simulation models hold out the promise of improving project planning and control. However, quantitative models require a very detailed understanding of the software process. In particular, process knowledge needs to be represented quantitatively which requires extensive, reliable software project data. When such data is lacking, quantitative models must impose severe constraints, restricting the value of the models. In contrast qualitative models are able to cope with imprecise knowledge by reasoning at a more abstract level. This paper illustrates the value and flexibility of qualitative models by developing a model of the software staffing process and comparing it with other quantitative staffing models. We show that the qualitative model provides more insights into the staffing process than the quantitative models because it requires fewer constraints and can thus simulate more behaviors. In particular, the qualitative model produces three possible outcomes: adding staff can increases project duration (i.e. Brooks' Law), adding staff may not affect duration, or adding staff may decrease duration. The qualitative model allows us to determine the conditions under which the different outcomes can occur.

Assessing hybrid incremental processes for SISOS development

New processes are being assessed to address modern challenges for software-Intensive Systems of Systems (SISOS), such as coping with rapid change while simultaneously assuring high dependability. A hybrid agile and plan-driven process based on the spiral lifecycle has been outlined to address these conflicting challenges with the need to rapidly field incremental capabilities in a value-based framework. A system dynamics model has been developed to assess the incremental hybrid process and support project decision making. It estimates cost and schedule for multiple increments of a hybrid process that uses three specialized teams, and also considers the mission value of software capabilities. It considers changes due to external volatility and feedback from user-driven change requests, and dynamically reestimates and allocates resources in response to the volatility. Deferral policies and team sizes can be experimented with, and it includes trade off functions between cost and the timing of changes within and across increments, length of deferral delays, and others. We illustrate how the model can be used to determine optimal agile team size to handle changes. Both the hybrid process and simulation model are being evolved on a very large scale incremental SISOS project and other potential pilots. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
