Automatic allocation of resources in software process simulations using their capability and productivity

software processes are very dependent on human behaviour, creativity and productivity. Business process management (BPM) simulation models are trying to model these properties to provide more precise information about the progress and parameters of the process. This paper describes a method for specifying competencies of resources in the process using competency models. These competencies are used to simulate human resource capability and productivity that influences the duration and allocation of resources to activities in the process. Different allocation strategies are based on this capability and productivity model to determine which resources should be allocated during automatic simulations. This method is then integrated into the BPM method simulation environment that is used to compare these allocation strategies in software process simulations for a middle-sized software development company.

A significant problem in modern software engineering is maturity assessment of organizations developing software. We propose the use of process model of RUP development methodology as a pattern for comparing it with the tested project. Percent values of accordance coefficient determine the task accordance of the tested project with the pattern of activities flow. This RUP model concept is based on a multi-agent based simulation (MABS). It presents agents and their behaviours as well as objects placed in the agent system environment. The behaviour of agents is presented as a set of Finite State Automatons. The usefulness of the method for assessment of organization's maturity was examined in a two-part experiment. The result of the first part of the experiment was used in the second part as the process pattern to determine the accordance of a sample project to the result of simulated model. The results confirmed the usefulness of the model in maturity assessment.

We propose utilizing a process model of RUP development methodology, as a pattern for comparing it with the examined process. Two factors were proposed to assess maturity and factor determining the efficiency of the RUP process. The above mentioned RUP model concept is based on a multi-agent based simulation (MABS). It presents goals and behaviours of agents as well as components of the agent system environment. To confirm the usefulness of the method for assessment of organization's maturity, a two-fold experiment was undertaken. The results confirm the usefulness of the model in efficiency and maturity assessment. First part consisted of tuning the simulation internal parameters to the development process. In the second part we propose three factors that can be used to assess efficiency and maturity of a RUP IT organization. The proposed coefficients are an extension of previous research by the authors, devoted to the assessment of organizational readiness for agile processes transformation.

A software maintenance process is important for reducing maintenance effort and for improving software quality. In recent years, the Lean-Kanban approach has been widely applied in software practice including software maintenance. This approach minimizes Work-in-Progress (WIP), which is the number of items that are worked on by the team at any given time, thus improving the maintenance process. In this paper, we describe our simulation studies, which show that the Lean-Kanban approach can indeed help reduce the average time needed to complete maintenance requests. We develop a process simulator that can simulate both existing maintenance processes that do not use a WIP limit and that adopt it. We perform two case studies using real maintenance data collected from a Microsoft project and from a Chinese software firm. The main results of our study are twofold. First, we demonstrate that it is possible to effectively model and simulate, using actors and events, a maintenance process where a flow of issues is processed through a sequence of activities, correctly reproducing key statistics of real data. Second, our results confirm that the WIP-limited process could be useful to increase the efficiency of software maintenance, as reported in previous industrial practices. In the process of software development it is of high interest for a project manager to gain insights about the ongoing process and possible development trends at several points in time. Substantial factors influencing this process are, e.g., the constellation of the development team, the growth and complexity of the system, and the error-proneness of software entities. For this purpose we build an agent based simulation tool which predicts the future of a project under given circumstances, stored in parameters, which control the simulation process. We estimate these parameters with the help of software mining. Our work exposed the need for a more fine-grained model for the developer behavior. Due to this we create a learning model, which helps us to understand the contribution behavior of developers and, thereby, to determine simulation parameters close to reality. In this paper we present our agent based simulation model for software evolution and describe how methods from statistical learning and data mining serves us to estimate suitable simulation parameters.

software processes and software Engineering (SE) methods belong to those knowledge areas which are challenging to be taught intuitively accessible. The specification "Kernel and Language for software Engineering Methods (Essence)" [1] claims to deliver an approach to consolidate all essential dimensions of SE-endeavors into an universal compact and actionable kernel. This paper describes the characteristics of the Essence specification with respect to its suitability for use in academic SE education where students get introduced to the world of SE methods and software processes. To enable a deep understanding of the Essence concepts in an academic setting a suitable approach is needed. The integrated approach presented in this paper introduces students stepwise into the concepts of Essence. It lets them explore the concepts in a virtual simulated game environment and finally deploy them in real world SE endeavors. Thereby an efficient and engaging learning arrangement supports the active construction of knowledge. It encourages active exploration, enables the viewing of the learning object from different perspectives and promotes articulation and reflection in social interchange early in the learning process. Key objectives of this approach are to sensitize students for the diversity of dimensions that have to be taken into account in a SE endeavor, to provide a valuable guidance for using SE methods inside and outside of their curriculum and to enable students to transfer their newly acquired knowledge to other contexts.

software process simulation (SPS) research has increased since 1998 when the first ProSim Workshop was held. This paper aims to reveal how SPS has evolved during the past 10 years based on the preliminary results from the systematic literature review of SPS publications from 1998 to 2007. Trends over the period showed that interest in continuous modelling was decreasing and interest in micro-processes was increasing. Hybrid models were based primarily on system dynamics and discrete event simulation and were all implemented by vertical integration.

software process simulation modeling (SPSM) has become an increasingly active research area since its introduction in the late 1980s. Particularly during the last ten years the related research community and the number of publications have been growing. The objective of this research is to provide insights about the evolution of SPSM research during the last 10 years. A systematic literature review was proposed with two subsequent stages to achieve this goal. This paper presents the preliminary results of the first stage of the review that is exclusively focusing on a core set of publication sources. More than 200 relevant publications were analyzed in order to find answers to the research questions, including the purposes and scopes of SPSM, application domains, and predominant research issues. From the analysis the following conclusions could be drawn: (1) Categories for classifying software process simulation models as suggested by the authors of a landmark publication in 1999 should be adjusted and refined to better capture the diversity of published models. (2) Research improving the efficiency of SPSM is gaining importance. (3) Hybrid process simulation models have attracted interest as a possibility to more realistically capture complex real-world software processes.

We present the application of software process modeling and simulation using an agent-based approach to a real case study of software maintenance. The original process used PSP/TSP;it spent a large amount of time estimating in advance maintenance requests, and needed to be greatly improved. To this purpose, a Kanban system was successfully implemented, that demonstrated to be able to substantially improve the process without giving up PSP/TSP. We customized the simulator and, using input data with the same characteristics of the real ones, we were able to obtain results very similar to that of the processes of the case study, in particular of the original process. We also simulated, using the same input data, the possible application of the Scrum process to the same data, showing results comparable to the Kanban process.
