Program comprehension plays an important role in software Engineering. In fact, many of the software lifecycle activities depend on program comprehension. Despite the importance of MATLAB and Octave programing languages in the Engineering and Statistical communities, little attention has been paid to the conception, implementation and characterization of tools and techniques for the comprehension of programs written in these languages. Considering this scenario, this paper presents a Multiple View Interactive Environment (MVIE) called OctMiner that supports the comprehension of programs developed in the aforementioned languages. OctMiner provides a set of coordinated visual metaphors that can be adjusted in accordance with the comprehension goals. An example is presented to illustrate the main functionalities of OctMiner in a real scenario of program comprehension.

Distributed Java applications represent a large growth area in software. Such applications are composed of distributed components that interact with each other to provide the desired functionality. visualization of these interactions helps designers, programmers and testers in many aspects of software development: understanding application behavior, testing, debugging, checking conformance of the implementation with the design, and performance tuning. We have developed a technique to visualize execution of distributed Java RMI-based applications in terms of sequences of method calls between distributed objects. In this paper we describe the technique and a prototype implementation of a Tool for Remote Interactions Monitoring (TRIM).

A large body of research is available on software clustering, code navigation, and many tools have been developed to comprehend large software systems. However, little attention has been paid to the area of visual clustering. In this paper, we leverage static dependencies and visual clustering to identify landmarks which are important legibility features that developers use as reference points during code navigation. This paper describes VisLan, a tool for visualizing landmark files in source code. We discuss the key features of VisLan and improvements for future work.

In the past decades, integrated development environments (IDEs) have been largely advanced to facilitate software engineering tasks and improve developer productivity. Yet, with growing information needs driven by increasing complexity in developing modern software with demands for high quality and reliability, developers often need to switch among multiple user interfaces, even across different applications, in their development process, which breaks their mental workflow thus tends to adversely affect their work efficiency and productivity. This paper discusses challenges faced by the current IDE design mainly due to working context transitions imposed on developers during their search for multiple information sources for their development needs. It remarks the primary blockades behind and initially explores some high-level design considerations for overcoming such challenges in the next-generation IDEs. Specifically, a few design enhancements on top of modern IDEs are proposed, attempting to reduce the overheads of frequent context switching commonly seen in the multitasking practice of developers.

In software Engineering, some of the most critical activities are maintenance and evolution. However, to perform both with quality, minimizing impacts and risks, developers need to analyze and identify where the main problems come from previously. In this paper, we introduce DR-Tools Suite, a set of lightweight open-source tools that analyze and calculate source code metrics, allowing developers to visualize the results in different formats and graphs. Also, we define a set of heuristics to help the code analysis. We conducted two case studies (one academic and one industrial) to collect feedback on the tools suite, on how we will evolve the tools, as well as insights to develop new tools that support developers in their daily work.

To support the vision of Industry 4.0 and smart factories, manufacturing companies need to evolve their machines towards intelligent, connected cyber-physical systems (CPS). software is at the heart of these digital transformation processes. OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is an industrial standard for horizontal and vertical communication of CPS. The adoption of OPC UA has a significant impact on the design of industrial production systems and on the development process. In this paper, we report on our experiences of migrating a heterogeneous software stack of a series machine production company to OPC UA. We show that automated approaches (i.e., static code analysis, code generation, and documentation generation) are the foundation for a holistic approach for working with OPC UA across different system layers and development teams. Understanding the Document Object Model (DOM) is crucial for web development, yet traditional 2D representations can obscure the hierarchical complexity and spatial relationships of HTML elements. This paper introduces babia-html, a component of BabiaXR, which offers a novel approach to visualizing the DOM in 3D and XR for the web. Utilizing A-Frame, we develop a tool that provides real-time, three-dimensional representations of HTML structures. Additionally, we present a plugin for Visual Studio Code (VSCode) that integrates this 3D visualization directly into the development environment. Our goal is to explore how this visualization can enhance the comprehension of HTML structures, improve debugging processes, and facilitate more effective communication of structural changes within development teams. We outline the standalone capabilities of babia-html, its integration as a VSCode extension, and various use cases demonstrating its practical applications. This work provides preliminary insights into the potential benefits of 3D DOM visualization and its implications for modern web development practices, considering the potential impact on developer productivity and cognitive load, and proposing directions for future research and development. The graphical representations of software (code visualization in particular) may provide both professional programmers and students learning only the basics with support in program comprehension. Among the numerous proposed approaches, our research applies the city metaphor for the visualisation of such code elements as classes, functions, or attributes by the tool CodeMetropolis. It uses the game engine of Minecraft for the graphics, and is able to visualize various properties of the code based on structural metrics. In this work, we present our approach to integrate our visualization tool into the Eclipse IDE environment. Previously, only standalone usage was possible, but with this new version the users can invoke the visualization directly from the IDE, and all the analysis is performed in the background. The new version of the tool now includes an Eclipse plug-in and a Minecraft modification in addition to the analysis and visualization modules which have also been extended with some new features. Possible use cases and a detailed scenario are presented.

Understanding and debugging of data structures and algorithms (DSA) is one of the most common tasks in computer science. DSA tests have also become a standard threshold that software developers have to cross to "get the job". One major challenge in comprehending and debugging DSA implementations lies in establishing and maintaining mental models of the quintessentially complex and twisted networks of events that make up their dynamic runtime behavior. Despite the high level of difficulty of this crucial task, general purpose tools to help users understand or reason about DSA implementations still have very limited capabilities. In this work we present Dbux-PDG, a dynamic Program Dependency Graph extension for the Dbux omniscient debugger. It captures data and control flow, as well as data dependencies of a program's execution for visualization and user interaction. To deal with the immense complexity of non-trivial programs, it offers multiple layers of summarization, that allow the user to explore either the graph as a whole or in parts, one step at a time, as they see fit. We present our findings from applying Dbux-PDG to 94 diverse algorithms and explore its utility in several case studies. All visual results are made available in an online gallery. Monitoring code quality and dependencies is an important task to keep software maintainable. While generally well researched, only little work on visually analyzing code quality of component-based front-end web applications exists that considers the specifics of such software systems. We propose an approach to visualize dependencies and code quality metrics of component-based JavaScript React applications. Our prototype implementation uses a node-link diagram for dependency visualization, tailored to the specific component structure of React applications and enriched with various visual cues. It is linked with different panels to show code quality and exact source code locations. Recommendations on how the quality of the system under analysis can be improved and refactored are provided. We evaluated our prototype in a small user study with four participants and found that it helped in program comprehension tasks and finding refactoring opportunities.
