software clustering techniques have been used to analyze the reality of software structure. The visualization of the detected clusters has also been studied. However, the features implemented by the detected clusters are not obvious and understanding them is a crucial part of the industrial use of software clustering. In this study, we examined the existing information retrieval method and found three major issues it has. We developed technical solutions for each of them: using hierarchical labeling, weighing the words likely representing the feature by considering an architectural convention, and modifying the idf score by the scale of the cluster. The effectiveness of our approach is validated through case studies using actual software products including a COBOL business application. Also, we faced two additional practical problems: effectiveness of the method words and plural and conjugated forms of the words. We found the method name words were less useful than the class name words, and lemmatization was successfully used to normalize the form of the words even in the case of program identifiers.

software visualizations can provide a concise overview of a complex software system. Unfortunately, as software has no physical shape, there is no 'natural' mapping of software to a two-dimensional space. As a consequence most visualizations tend to use a layout in which position and distance have no meaning, and consequently layout typically diverges from one visualization to another. We propose an approach to consistent layout for software visualization, called software Cartography, in which the position of a software artifact reflects its vocabulary, and distance corresponds to similarity of vocabulary. We use Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) to map software artifacts to a vector space, and then use Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) to map this vector space down to two dimensions. The resulting consistent layout allows us to develop a variety of thematic software maps that express very different aspects of software while making it easy to compare them. The approach is especially suitable for comparing views of evolving software, as the vocabulary of software artifacts tends to be stable over time. We present a prototype implementation of software Cartography, and illustrate its use with practical examples from numerous open-source case studies. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The increasing number of cybersecurity threats we are facing nowadays is fueling the development of new detection and contrast techniques based on the analysis of Big Data. In such a setting, the MapReduce paradigm has quickly become the de facto standard for carrying out this processing. This has led to a surge in the number of job offerings involving this skill. Moreover, we are experiencing a significant increase in the number of computer science courses covering this paradigm as well as its most popular implementations, Spark and Hadoop. In this paper, it is presented a solution for supporting the teaching of MapReduce through the use of software visualization. The proposed solution has two main goals. The first is to help students in understanding how the MapReduce paradigm succeeds in solving a complex problem by decomposing it in simpler sub problems, where each of these is solved by means of map and/or reduce operations. The second is about the capability of showing how an input dataset is partitioned in blocks and processed in parallel by the different computing units of a distributed computing system. In both cases, the use of software visualization techniques with proper graphical metaphors helps the students in understanding what is going on, by providing them with a graphical representation that, on a side, describes how the considered algorithm works on an input dataset while, on the other side, illustrates the speed-up achieved thanks to the distributed approach.

Motivating students to comprehend software structure, behavior and complexity is often difficult because software cannot be seen or even touched, disappear into files on disks. To overcome this problem, the author has prepared an open source project, some programs developed by students themselves and two software visualization tools, and applied them in programming teaching. They are suitable for classroom use in undergraduate programming courses. The effectiveness of software visualization in programming teaching has been evaluated formally by students. The implementation of software visualization in programming teaching was judged to be successful because of the positive student feedback. This paper describes the case and experiment, the overall effectiveness, and plans for further work.

software visualization is a growing field of research, in which developers are assisted in understanding and analyzing complex applications by mapping different aspects of a software system onto visual attributes. Under the assumption that virtual reality, due to the higher degree of immersion, may enhance user experience, researchers have begun to port existing visualization techniques to this environment. Oftentimes, layout algorithms and user interaction methods are more or less transferred one-to-one, though little is known about the effect of virtual reality in visual analytics and program comprehension. Moreover, little research on the behavior of developers in different three-dimensional visualization environments has been done yet. This paper extends the results of a previous controlled experiment, in which the EvoStreets visualization technique was compared in different two- and three-dimensional environments. In the original experiment, we could not find evidence that any of the environments, namely, 2D, 2.5D, and virtual reality, effects the time required to find an answer or the correctness of the given answer. However, we found indications that movement patterns differ between the 2.5D and the virtual reality environments. For this paper, we analyzed and refined the movement trajectories that have been recorded in the previous experiment. We found significant differences for some of the tasks that had to be solved by the participants. In particular, we found evidence that the path length, average speed, and occupied volume differ. Though we could find significant correlations between these metrics and correctness, we found indications that there is a correlation with time, which, in turn, differs significantly between the 2.5D and the VR environments for many tasks. These findings may have implications on the design of visualizations, interactions, and recommendation systems for these different environments.

In this paper, we evaluate applying a general purpose visual analytics tool Jigsaw to visualize the JHotDraw open source software system. We describe how Jigsaw can be applied to visualize software, and show how it can support some program comprehension tasks.

In spite of the available resources provided by modern IDEs, program understanding remains as a very difficult and important task in software engineering. This paper presents a software visualization environment named SourceMiner. Implemented as an Eclipse plug-in to enhance software comprehension activities, SourceMiner is an extensible, interactive and coordinated multi-perspective environment. It is multi-perspective because it provides sets of views that allow programmers to look at the software from different points of view. It is coordinated because views are linked to each other, and consistently respond to the actions executed by the programmers on the environment. It is interactive in the sense that programmers can dynamically configure visual scenarios to better support the building of mental models. It is extensible because its architecture was designed to facilitate the inclusion of new views to the environment. This paper describes the principles behind the design of SourceMiner, and discusses how it has been used to support software comprehension activities such as the identification of code smells and the characterization of object-oriented software systems.

A systematic literature review of student engagement in software visualization: a theoretical perspective

Background and Context: In spite of the decades spent developing software visualization (SV), doubts still remain regarding their effectiveness. Furthermore, student engagement plays an important role in improving SV effectiveness as it is correlated with many positive academic outcomes. It has been shown that the existing SV has failed to engage students effectively. Objective: Therefore, there is a need to understand the theories behind SV design from the engagement perspective to produce a roadmap for future tool construction. The aim of this study was to identify the theories have been used in literature to explain or construct student engagement with SV in computer science courses for novices. Method: We performed a systematic literature review that identified a total of 58 articles published between 2011 and 2017, which were then selected for the study. However, among them, only 18 articles had discussed their theoretical framework. Findings: The results of this study show a richness in the theoretical framework obtained from different disciplines, however, constructivism is still dominant in the computing education research (CER) domain. It is evidently clear from the findings that the theories generated from the CER domain are needed to enhance the effectiveness of SV.

We have enhanced MetricAttitude. It is a visualization tool based on static analysis that provides a mental picture by viewing an object-oriented software system by means of polymetric views. In particular, we have integrated an Information Retrieval engine and named this new version of visualization tool as MetricAttitude++. It allows the user to formulate a textual query and to show on the visual representation of the subject software the elements that are more similar to that query. This could be useful in all those cases in which a user needs to identify (or to localize) features implemented in the source code. Several filters are also available to hide possibly irrelevant details and to ease the browsing and then the comprehension of a software system. Finally, we have applied MetricAttitude++ on a number of object-oriented software systems. In this paper, we report preliminary results of a quantitative study on a widely studied open-source software, namely JEdit. On the basis of our results it seems that MetricAttitude++ can be effectively applied to different kinds of source code comprehension tasks and to concept location in source code, in particular.

In the context of program comprehension, learning and working in teams, e.g., via pair programming, shared documentation, and discussions, can facilitate the comprehension tasks. So far, team collaboration is a relatively unexplored aspect in software visualizations, in particular approaches which are designed and explored to enable collaborative program comprehension. In this paper, we introduce our collaboratively usable software visualization environment for program comprehension. Related approaches are often limited to single-user modes, therefore neglect the advantages of multi-user collaboration, or allow only the use of a single type of device. Our approach addresses this topic and allows users to collaboratively explore software visualizations in a device-heterogeneous environment. User events, e.g., sharable pop-up information windows, are synchronized between each session participant, regardless of the employed device. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first approaches that combines on-screen, virtual reality, and augmented reality modes in a single web-based SV tool for program comprehension. We conducted a user study to collect initial results regarding the perceived usefulness and enjoyment of co-explored software cities In that study, 20 participants collaboratively solved program comprehension tasks while using each mode consecutively. The results indicate that the majority of participants find our approach useful and enjoyable, with AR being the least favored mode. We provide each participant's video recording, the study's raw results, Jupyter Notebooks, and all steps to reproduce our evaluation as supplementary package.
