Using software visualization to accomplish certain tasks such as design defect de- tection can prove tedious. Users first need to find and configure a visualization tool that is adequate for representing the data they want to examine. Then all too often, they are forced to manually navigate the software system in order to complete their task. What we propose is a simpler and more efficient approach that moves the emphasis from con- figuring a tool and manually navigating the system to writing a definition of the work we want to accomplish. Our goal-driven assistant then generates the best visualization tool and guide us through the navigation of the task. Our approach consists of three main components. The first component is a domain- specific language (DSL) to describe analysis tasks. The second component is a language to define the visualizations as customized implementations of the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. The last component is a generation process used to go from the analysis task to the visualization. By removing the need to configure a visualization tool and guiding the navigation of the system, we believe we made a tool that is simpler and faster to use than its conven- tional counterparts.

software visualization can play a significant role in our fight against software's inherent complexity. Despite all efforts made so far, software visualization tools have not succeeded to be a part of software Engineer's everyday practice. We believe that a properly defined taxonomy that will provide a framework for discussion, analysis and research guidance by offering a systematic and systemic overview of the area, covering all the concerns and challenges, is a starting point for a new approach for the field. After analyzing existing taxonomies and exploring existing tools, we approach software visualization as an interface between humans and software and we propose a multi-layered framework that incorporates all the concerns and the challenges of our field, in a neat, systematic and expandable way that can also serve as a roadmap for a research area and that can promote communication of existing and new ideas.

The software Product Line (SPL) provides software customization by composing several different web services together. When further supported by Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), SPL offers unprecedented advantages for reusing software artifacts in mass customization of software applications, leading to radically reduced time, cost, and effort of software development. A Petri-Net based visualization system for the software customization has been developed in our research group. This thesis works on enhancement of the prior work by introducing an interactive approach of software visualization for software customization. The proposed approach segregates the users based on their interaction with the system and the best suited visualizations are selected and displayed for the users. In this thesis an interactive framework based on Contextual Control Model has been proposed. Context: Code annotations is a widely used feature in Java systems to configure custom metadata on programming elements. Their increasing presence creates the need for approaches to assess and comprehend their usage and distribution. In this context, software visualization has been studied and researched to improve program comprehension in different ***: This study aimed at designing a software visualization approach that graphically displays how code annotations are distributed and organized in a software system and developing a tool, as a reference implementation of the approach, to generate views and interact with ***: We conducted an empirical evaluation through questionnaires and interviews to evaluate our visualization approach considering four aspects: (i) effectiveness for program comprehension, (ii) perceived usefulness, (iv) perceived ease of use, and (iv) suitability for the intended audience. The resulting data was used to perform a qualitative and quantitative ***: The tool identifies package responsibilities providing visual information about their annotations at different levels. Using the developed tool, the participants achieved a high correctness rate in the program comprehension tasks and performed very well in questions about the overview of the system under analysis. Finally, participants perceived that the tool is suitable to visualize the distribution of code ***: The results show that the visualization approach using the developed tool is effective in program comprehension tasks related to code annotations, which can also be used to identify responsibilities in the application packages. Moreover, it was evaluated as suitable for newcomers to overview the usage of annotations in the system and for architects to perform a deep analysis that can potentially detect misplaced annotations and abnormal growths on their usage.

The influence of the city metaphor and its derivates in software visualization

Context: The city metaphor is widely used in software visualization to represent complex systems as buildings and structures, providing an intuitive way for developers to understand software components. Various software visualization tools have utilized this approach. Objective: Identify the influence of the city metaphor on software visualization research, determine its state-of-the-art status, and identify derived tools and their main characteristics. Method: Conduct a systematic mapping study of 406 publications that reference the first paper on the use of the city metaphor in software visualization and/or the main paper of the CodeCity tool. Analyze the 168 publications from which valuable information could be extracted, and build a complete categoric analysis. Results: The field has grown considerably, with an increasing number of publications since 2001, and a changing research community with evolving interconnections between groups. Researchers have developed more tools that support the city metaphor, but less than 50% of the tools were referenced in their papers. Moreover, 85% of the tools did not use extended reality environments, indicating an opportunity for further exploration. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the active and continually growing presence of the city metaphor in research and its impact on software visualization and its derivatives.

Context: In software visualization research, various approaches strive to create immersive environments by employing extended reality devices. In that context, only few research has been conducted on the effect of collaborative, i.e., multi-user, extended reality environments. Objective: We present our journey toward a web-based approach to enable (location-independent) collaborative program comprehension using desktop, virtual reality, and mobile augmented reality devices. Method: We designed and implemented three mull-user modes in our web-based live trace visualization tool ExplorViz. Users can employ desktop, mobile, and virtual reality devices to collaboratively explore software visualizations. We conducted two preliminary user studies in which subjects evaluated our VR and AR modes after solving common program comprehension tasks. Results: The VR and AR environments can be suitable for collaborative work in the context of program comprehension. The analyzed feedback revealed problems regarding the usability, e.g., readability of visualized entities and performance issues. Nonetheless, our approach can be seen as a blueprint for other researchers to replicate or build upon these modes and results. Conclusions: ExplorViz's mull-user modes are our approach to enable heterogeneous collaborative software visualizations. The preliminary results indicate the need for more research regarding effectiveness, usability, and acceptance. Unlike related work, we approach the latter by introducing a mull-user augmented reality environment for software visualizations based on off-the-shelf mobile devices.

The paper presents a new 3D representation for visualizing large software systems. The origins of this representation can be directly traced to the SeeSoft metaphor. This work extends these visualization mechanisms by utilizing the third dimension, texture, abstraction mechanism, and by supporting new manipulation techniques and user interfaces. By utilizing a 3D representation we can better represent higher dimensional data than previous 2D views. An overview of our prototype tool and its basic functionality is given. Applications of this method to particular software engineering tasks are also discussed.

software visualizations can provide a concise overview of a complex software system. Unfortunately, as software has no physical shape, there is no 'natural' mapping of software to a two-dimensional space. As a consequence most visualizations tend to use a layout in which position and distance have no meaning, and consequently layout typically diverges from one visualization to another. We propose an approach to consistent layout for software visualization, called software Cartography, in which the position of a software artifact reflects its vocabulary, and distance corresponds to similarity of vocabulary. We use Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) to map software artifacts to a vector space, and then use Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) to map this vector space down to two dimensions. The resulting consistent layout allows us to develop a variety of thematic software maps that express very different aspects of software while making it easy to compare them. The approach is especially suitable for comparing views of evolving software, as the vocabulary of software artifacts tends to be stable over time. We present a prototype implementation of software Cartography, and illustrate its use with practical examples from numerous open-source case studies. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Background: software evolution is an important topic in software engineering. It generally deals with large amounts of data, as one must look at whole project histories as opposed to their current snapshot. software visualization is the field of software engineering that aims to help people to understand software through the use of visual resources. It can be effectively used to analyze and understand the large amount of data produced during software evolution. Objective: This study investigates software Evolution visualization (SEV) approaches, collecting evidence about how SEV research is structured, synthesizing current evidence on the goals of the proposed approaches and identifying key challenges for its use in practice. Methods: A mapping study was conducted to analyze how the SEV area is structured. Selected primary studies were classified and analyzed with respect to nine research questions. Results: SEV has been used for many different purposes, especially for change comprehension, change prediction and contribution analysis. The analysis identified gaps in the studies with respect to their goals, strategies and approaches. It also pointed out to a widespread lack of empirical studies in the area. Conclusion: Researchers have proposed many SEV approaches during the past years, but some have failed to clearly state their goals, tie them back to concrete problems, or formally validate their usefulness. The identified gaps indicate that there still are many opportunities to be explored in the area. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

code_swarm: A Design Study in Organic software visualization

In May of 2008, we published online a series of software visualization videos using a method called code-swarm. Shortly thereafter, we made the code open source and its popularity took off. This paper is a study of our code-swarm application, comprising its design, results and public response. We share our design methodology, including why we chose the organic information visualization technique, how we designed for both developers and a casual audience, and what lessons we learned from our experiment. We validate the results produced by code-swarm through a qualitative analysis and by gathering online user comments. Furthermore, we successfully released the code as open source, and the software community used it to visualize their own projects and shared their results as well. In the end, we believe code-swarm has positive implications for the future of organic information design and open source information visualization practice.
