AbstractResource manager objects are the operating system entities that manage computer system resources. In this paper we extend Hoare\'s and Brinch Hansen\'s monitor concept, and introduce aresource monitorlanguage construct that represents a resource manager object. Resource monitors provide requesting processes with implicit synchronization, and do not require separate processes to perform the resource access operations. The resource monitor construct is compared to current language constructs used to structure operating system software. For this purpose we use an evaluation methodology that combines software complexity measurements with program performance measurements. The evaluation itself is carried out in a Concurrent Pascal‐like programming environment. The current language constructs have a software complexity that is larger by 37 to 219 per cent over the resource monitor\'s complexity. A multistep technique is described that can be applied to improve system structure and to improve performance when necessary. The technique starts with analysis of system structure via the structured design guidelines of coupling and cohesion. Then, the manual system structure improvement transformations are applied. The effect of the transformations on execution time can be determined. In the final step, vertical migration is used on the restructured system to improve its performance. The results suggest that system programmers can identify specific cases where both good system structure and good performance are attainable and others where tradeoffs have to be made. The technique is particularly applicable during the maintenance phase of the software life cycle. Figures.

This paper proposes a methodology relating to the design and implementation of code changes in the code modification phase of the software maintenance cycle. This methodology aims at maintaining the structurization of the control-flow. Also illustrated are the characteristics of a tool which supports the methodology proposed and calculates the variation of entropy, considered as the complexity of the control-flow, induced in a program by a maintenance operation.

Storage Management in the NVRAM Era

Emerging nonvolatile memory technologies (NVRAM) offer an alternative to disk that is persistent, provides read latency similar to DRAM, and is byte-addressable. Such NVRAMs could revolutionize online transaction processing (OLTP), which today must employ sophisticated optimizations with substantial software overheads to overcome the long latency and poor random access performance of disk. Nevertheless, many candidate NVRAM technologies exhibit their own limitations, such as greater-than-DRAM latency, particularly for writes. In this paper, we reconsider OLTP durability management to optimize recovery performance and forward-processing throughput for emerging NVRAMs. First, we demonstrate that using NVRAM as a drop-in replacement for disk allows near-instantaneous recovery, but software complexity necessary for disk (i.e., Write Ahead Logging/ARIES) limits transaction throughput. Next, we consider the possibility of removing software-managed DRAM buffering. Finally, we measure the cost of ordering writes to NVRAM, which is vital for correct recovery. We consider three recovery mechanisms: NVRAM Disk-Replacement, In-Place Updates (transactions persist data in-place), and NVRAM Group Commit (transactions commit/persist atomically in batches). Whereas In-Place Updates offers the simplest design, it introduces persist synchronizations at every page update. NVRAM Group Commit minimizes persist synchronization, offering up to a 50% throughput improvement for large synchronous persist latencies.

Performance Evaluation of Node-mapping-based Flexray-CAN Gateway for in-vehicle Networking System

As vehicles become more intelligent, in-vehicle networking (IVN) systems, such as the controller area network (CAN) and the FlexRay networks, are essential for the convenience and safety of drivers. To expand the applicability of IVN systems, attention is currently being focused on the communication between heterogeneous networks such as body or chassis networking systems. The message-mapping-based gateway was developed to improve communication between FlexRay and CAN networks concerning vehicle information. However, there are obstacles to the wide acceptance of the FlexRay-CAN gateway for a vehicle. First, when the message ID for the network is changed, the gateway must be reloaded with the revised message-mapping table. Second, if the number of messages exchanged is increased in the network, the complexity of the gateway software rapidly increases. In order to overcome these obstacles, this paper presents a FlexRay-CAN gateway using a node-mapping method. A gateway operation algorithm is described, and an experimental evaluation for ID change and software complexity is presented.

Safety functions and software verification of NPP safety important systems

One of the most critical tasks in the software complexes quality assurance is the procedure of forming requirements to a developed or modified system and subsequent their verification. The essential errors are making in the first life cycle stages - these are errors in determining requirements, selecting the architecture, high-level design. Faults of safety critically important software may considerably damage the equipment or properties, as well to lead to an essential detriment of the environment and human victims. Increasing requirements to the software quality of NPP (nuclear power plant) safety important systems at all stages of the life cycle is concerned with increasing the software complexity and functionality and has led the necessity of developing approaches to justify both the system itself safety and software involved in the systems make-up. In the paper, an approach is considered, based on the "safety functions", meeting which in the sequel is verifying. In this critical review of the theory of software science, software science measures are examined in light of recent published data. Serious deficiencies include the failure to consider declarations and inpututput statements and counting a GO TO label as a unique operator for each operator label. It is shown that the length equation cannot be justified theoretically in the manner proposed by Halstead (1977). Empirical evidence seems to sustain the usefulness of the difficulty metric as a measure of error-proneness and suggests that the software science E is as good an effort measure as most others used. Some results are reported that support the utility of the time equation. Some data indicate that the language level is variant, but recent work may lead to a formulation that is statistically constant for a language, regardless of programmer or problem. There is published data suggesting software science metrics may be useful. It is possible that some of the formulas are only first approximations of the real relationships of program length, potential volume, programming effort, and programming time.

MEASURING IMPROVEMENTS IN PROGRAM CLARITY

New techniques of software measurement need to be developed to counteract the sharply rising cost of quality software production. An objective assessment of program clarity is necessary for the development of useful engineering guidelines to apply toward efficient software production and language development. A measure of program clarity is the functional relation between program clarity and the number and frequency of operators and operands which occur in the program. This gives the estimated amount of mental effort required to understand the program. By applying this measure to several published examples that demonstrate improvements in program clarity, an objective assessment can be made. The assessment will be found to agree with the experimental data gathered. The ease or difficulty of the task will be affected by the fluency with the programming language and familiarity with the problem area. Once an algorithm is understood, only a relatively small effort is required to express it as a program. Formulas.
