In this paper, we present a notion of observability and controllability in the context of software testing and debugging. Our view of observability is based on the ability of developers, testers, and debuggers to trace back a data dependency chain and observe the value of a variable by starting from a set of variables that are naturally observable (e.g., input/output variables). Likewise, our view of controllability enables one to modify and control the value of a variable through a data dependency chain by starting from a set of variables that can be modified (e.g., input variables). Consequently, the problem that we study in this paper is to identify the minimum number of variables that have to be made observable/controllable in order for a tester or debugger to observe/control the value of another set of variables of interest, given the source code. We show that our problem is an instance of the well-known abstract diagnosis problem, where the objective is to find the minimum number of faulty components in a digital circuit, given the system description and value of input/output variables. We show that our problem is NP-complete even if the length of data dependencies is at most 2. In order to cope with the inevitable exponential complexity, we propose a mapping from the general problem, where the length of data dependency chains is unknown a priori, to integer linear programming. Our method is fully implemented in a tool chain for MISRA-C compliant source codes. Our experiments with several real-world applications show that in average, a significant number of debugging points can be reduced using our methods. This result is our motivation to apply our approach in debugging and instrumentation of embedded software, where changes must be minimal as they can perturb the timing constraints and resource consumption. Embedded software debugging using virtual filesystem abstractions

We present a scalable technique to simplify the software debugging process for embedded systems that is based on the use of distributed filesystem abstractions. In this technique, the principal building blocks within embedded systems comprising "system-on-chip" (SoC) devices export debugging interfaces realized with filesystem abstractions. These filesystem interfaces are composed in a manner consistent with the hardware hierarchy and provide a portable interface to concurrently debug software executing in the various processing elements within the embedded system. We illustrate application of the model to support the various software debugging requirements unique to SoCs, many of which traditional methods are ill-equipped to deal with. We also present an architecture that may be used to realize distributed filesystem abstractions within resource constrained embedded architectures. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The mobile devices have gained much functionality and intelligence with the growth of network technologies, the abundance of network resources, and the increase of various services. At the same time they are also becoming complicated and related problems to services and resources of mobile devices frequently occur. Since it is not easy for the manufacturers to completely remove the software errors of the mobile devices before they sell them, the users face inconvenience caused by them and the credibility of the manufacturers also decreases. So far, no definitive method has been given to debug software errors of the sold mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a debugging method to find and correct the software errors of the sold mobile devices based on the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Device Management (DM) standard. We define the managed objects (MOs) for composing the execution image and design the management operations for collecting MOs at the central server. We present a system that we have developed based on the MOs and the management operations. We also present how to debug software errors with the execution image and JTAG debugger.

During the process of fault localization, the spectrum-based techniques are frequently used and widely studied since they can automatically and effectively localize the faults of software and be implemented easily. So far most of spectrum-based fault localization techniques have relied heavily on the use of similarity coefficients. However, we noticed that existing similarity coefficients for fault localization may lack measure(s) to properly reflect the relationship between failing and passing test cases. It also has to note that the failing test cases usually are expected to provide more information to the similarity coefficients than the passing test cases. In order to evaluate the importance of failing and passing test cases in the similarity coefficients, a number of modified similarity coefficients in fault localization are presented and discussed. The modified similarity coefficients which are assigned the weights of the failing and/or passing test cases will be studied and analyzed with the multi-coverage-combined techniques. Five open source programs and 75 faulty versions in total from Siemens suite, which have been widely used for software testing and comparison of fault localization techniques, were selected as experiment subjects. Detailed analysis of the results shows that assigning the weights of failing and passing test cases to the similarity coefficients would be able to localize the faults more effectively and accurately.

Detecting latent errors is a key challenging issue in the software testing process. Latent errors could be best detected by bug predictors. A bug predictor manifests the effect of a bug on the program execution state. The aim has been to find the smallest reasonable subset of the bug predictors, manifesting all possible bugs within a program. In this paper, a new algorithm for finding the smallest subset of bug predictors is presented. The algorithm, firstly, applies a LASSO method to detect program predicates which have relatively higher effect on the termination status of the program. Then, a ridge regression method is applied to select a subset of the detected predicates as independent representatives of all the program predicates. Program control and data dependency graphs can be best applied to find the causes of bugs represented by the selected bug predictors. Our proposed approach has been evaluated on two well-known test suites. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach.

debugging is a problem-solving process, where the programmer searches through the code using strategic skills to locate and identify the bug. Two major approaches have been identified in debugging (Yoon and Garcia, 1995): the comprehension approach and the isolation approach. In order to investigate how programmers select and apply the comprehension and isolation approach while locating bugs, we performed an experiment using expert programmers. Our initial analysis shows that experts use hierarchical problem-solving strategies in debugging.

Most studies of software failures and faults have done little more than classify failures and faults collected from long-term projects. The authors propose a model to analyze failures and faults for debugging purposes. In the model, they define "failure modes" and "failure types" to identify the existence of program failures and the nature of the program failures, respectively. The goal of this research is to achieve a systematic process model to localize faults in debugging. They first examine properties of the proposed model from a theoretical point of view, then use the trityp program as a simple example to illustrate the possible usage of the model for debugging. Further study of the failure mode, a pilot experiment of applying the proposed model, and a way to employ heuristics according to different situations for fault localization are areas of future work.

In complex reconfigurable systems on chip, the dynamism of targeted applications requires an efficient management of platforms. To enable run-time resource management, operating system and reconfigurable SoC platform should be developed together. In this context, additionally to the issues inherent to hardware and software design development, we have to deal with the supplementary difficulty of the interaction between software and hardware, and of both with the platform. In this paper we present a real-time debugging tool operating in a mixed hardware and software environment. This dynamically loadable tool seriously decreases the time required for debugging while the overhead in terms of additional code is minimal.

Cognitive learning has been applied in various fields for the purpose of discussing human behavior. In this study, we employ learning functions in software reliability growth models (SRGMs) and consider the conscious/unconscious behavior and multiple learning effects in the models simultaneously to discuss the influence of learning effects on work performance in software debugging projects and also the influence of variations in the environment on learning effects. The models are based on Chiu's models [2] and employed a sine function [15] to describe the variable potential errors and to judge change-points in the software debugging process. The results showed almost perfect fitting for the models to the actual data sets, which means the staff engaged in software debugging projects have not only conscious learning effects but also unconscious behavior that can describe variable potential errors and explain the change-points in a software debugging process. This paper also examines the effectiveness of the proposed models and discuss when and what kinds of learning effects occur and how these influence software reliability those help managers to master the software debugging process, the performance of the staff involved in this process, the reliability of the software system, and in the employment of suitable methods to manage organizations.
