After introduction to the domain of data communications, the paper describes conventional and artificial intelligence approaches to software debugging. The main part of the paper describes our approach to computer network software debugging based on application of expert systems. Two debugging expert systems are described one based on knowledge of a human expert and another based on formal, specifications of the network software.

Recent impressive performance improvements in computer architecture have not led to significant gains in ease of debugging. software debugging often relies on inserting run-time software checks. In many cases, however, it is hard to find the root cause of a bug. Moreover, program execution typically slows down significantly, often by 10-100 times. To address this problem, this paper introduces the Intelligent Watcher (iWatcher), novel architectural support to monitor dynamic execution with minimal overhead, automatically, and flexibly. iWatcher associates program-specified monitoring functions with memory locations. When any such location is accessed, the monitoring function is automatically triggered with low overhead. To further reduce overhead and support rollback, iWatcher can leverage Thread-Level Speculation (TLS). To test iWatcher, we use applications with various bugs. Our results show that iWatcher detects many more software bugs than Valgrind, a well-known open-source bug detector. Moreover, iWatcher only induces a 4-80% execution overhead, which is orders of magnitude less than Valgrind. Even with 20% of the dynamic loads monitored in a program, iWatcher adds only 66-174% overhead. Finally, TLS is effective at reducing overheads for programs with substantial monitoring.

In this paper, a new approach for analyzing program behavioral graphs to detect fault suspicious subgraphs is presented. The existing graph mining approaches for bug localization merely detect discriminative subgraphs between failing and passing runs, which are not applicable when the context of a failure is not appeared in a discriminative pattern. In our proposed method, the suspicious transitions are identified by contrasting nearest neighbor failing and passing dynamic behavioral graphs. The technique takes advantage of null hypothesis testing and a new formula for ranking edges is presented. To construct the most bug relevant subgraph, the high ranked edges are applied and presented to the debugger. The experimental results on Siemens test suite and Space program reveal effectiveness of the proposed method on weighted dynamic graphs for locating bugs in comparison with other methods.

Application development environments for Reconfigurable Computing are the topic of many research and development projects yet few comprehensive debugging tools have been provided, rn this paper we describe a debugging environment for use with FPGA accelerated applications which supports co-validation and co-testing of the software and hardware portions of the application. Our Go-debugging environment supports in-situ debugging utilizing the readback capabilities of FPGA chips for fast recreation and isolation of a fault. We show that this environment has the potential to reduce application debug times from hours to just a few minutes.

Signature based error detection techniques (e.g. the application of watchdog processors) can be easily extended to support software debugging. The run-time sequence of signatures is stored in an extension of the traditional checker. As the signatures identify the states of the program, a trace of the statements executed by the checked processor is available. The signature buffer can be efficiently utilized if the signature sequence is compressed. In the paper, two real-time compression methods are presented and compared. The general method uses predefined dictionaries, while the other one utilizes the structural information encoded in the signatures.

Analyzing the effect of imperfect debugging on software fault detection and correction processes via a simulation framework

During a debugging operation, there is a high probability that an additional fault will be introduced into the program when removing an existing fault. Thus, perfect debugging is an ideal but impractical assumption when modeling software reliability. If the debugging of a software system is imperfect, more faults may be introduced and detected. In such cases, it may be necessary to add more staff to the debugging team to share the load and ensure the quality of the software. To investigate the effects of imperfect debugging, we simulate the fault detection and correction processes by a single-queue multichannel queuing model with feedback. In this paper, two debugging procedures are discussed. The first, called PROCEDURE_PERFECT_debugging, is based on a single-queue multichannel queuing model and deals with the case of perfect debugging. Then, we relax the restriction on perfect debugging, and further propose PROCEDURE_IMPERFECT_debugging based on a queuing model with feedback to address the case of imperfect debugging. We demonstrate the implementation of the procedures via two case studies in which we quantify the effects of imperfect debugging in terms of throughput, time consumption, and debugger utilization. Finally, based on the measurement results, we determine the most suitable staffing level (i.e., the number of debuggers required) for a debugging system under different degrees of imperfect debugging. Organizational learning in open-source software projects: An analysis of debugging data

This paper studies organizational learning effects in open-source programming, projects. Working with data from,the Apache and Mozilla projects, the study focuses on three aspects of open-source development. The first is the use of the open-source,approach as a hedge against system complexity. The second is the adaptive learning mechanisms realized by the debugging process. The last is the learning curve effects of. project-specific experience on bug cycle times. The results indicate that while open-source development is subject to positive learning effects, these effects are not universal, with some projects deriving more benefit than others.
