Embedded computers (EC) have been used widely, however, embedded computer software is often difficult to develop for the lack of a suitable debugging environment. With the traditional in-circuit debugging method, it is difficult to analyze the reason for errors; also it is impossible to debug a software before the implementation of the associated hardware; moreover, it costs both money and time to create the hardware, so that it can hardly keep up with the ever-changing requirements of a great number of ECs. To tackle the problem, we have researched a prototyping method for a simulation debugging environment (SDE) of embedded computer software. Our purpose is to establish an environment to construct SDE and use the software SDE to substitute the traditional in-circuit debugging environment. By the method, users can construct a SDE at a higher speed and lower cost, the development efficiency for embedded computer software will also be greatly increased.

This paper describes a tool for debugging programs which have been developed using evolutionary software techniques. The tool enhances the traditional debugging approach by automating the comparison of data structures between two running programs. Using this technique, it is possible to use early versions of a program which are known to operate correctly to generate values for comparison with the new program under development. The tool allows the reference code and the program being developed to execute on different computer systems by using open distributed systems techniques. A simple visualisation system allows the user to view the differences in data structures. By using the data flow of the code, it is possible to locate faulty sections of code rapidly. A small case study of finding an error in a scientific code is given.

Real-time software tools and effective operating system supports are essential to reduce the complexity of real-time software developments such as a switching system. In this paper, we propose a new advanced cross debugging architecture based on a network transparent and connection independent client-server model. It enables more flexible interactive debugging of a program, including the design and the implementation of such toots. It also enables easy and efficient monitoring of the behaviour of target system.

debugging actions during the test/debug phase of software development are not always performed perfectly. That is, not all the software faults detected are perfectly removed without introducing new faults. This phenomenon is called imperfect debugging. The hyper-geometric distribution software reliability growth model (HGDM) was developed for estimating the number of software faults initially in a program. We propose an extended model based on the HGDM incorporating the notion of imperfect debugging.

We present holistic debugging, a novel method for observing execution of complex and distributed software. It builds on an instruction set simulator, which provides reproducible experiments and non-intrusive probing of state in a distributed system. Instruction set simulators, however, only provide low-level information, so a holistic debugger contains a translation framework that maps this information to higher abstraction level observation tools, such as source code debuggers. We have created Nornir, a proof-of-concept holistic debugger, built on the simulator Simics. For each observed process in the simulated system, Nornir creates an abstraction translation stack, with virtual machine translators that map machine-level storage contents (e.g. physical memory, registers) provided by Simics, to application-level data (e.g. virtual memory contents) by parsing the data structures of operating systems and virtual machines. Nornir includes a modified version of the GNU debugger (GDB), which supports non-intrusive symbolic debugging of distributed applications. Nornir’s main interface is a debugger shepherd, a programmable interface that controls multiple debuggers, and allows users to coherently inspect the entire state of heterogeneous, distributed applications. It provides a robust observation platform for construction of new observation tools.

Several aspects of the multidimensional problem of providing monitoring support for the debugging and performance analysis of distributed and parallel systems and parallel applications are presented. The key elements of the solution to the problem are a formal event-action model at the process level and a layered architectural model. The application of the event-action model to the development of the abstract layered architectural model is shown, as well as a proposed implementation sketch of a nonintrusive monitor for the PASM parallel processing system.< >

One of the interesting problems in hardware-software co-design is that of debugging embedded software in conjunction with hardware. Currently, most software designers wait until a working hardware prototype is available before debugging software. Bugs discovered in hardware during the software debugging phase require re-design and re-fabrication, thereby not only delaying the project but also increasing cost. It also puts software debugging on hold until a new hardware prototype is available. In this paper we describe a hardware-software co-simulator that can be used in the design, debugging and verification of embedded systems. This tool contains simulators for different parts of the system and a backplane which is used to integrate the simulators. This enables us to simulate hardware, software and their interaction efficiently. We also address the problem of simulation speed. Currently, the more accurate (in terms of timing) the models used, the longer it takes to simulate a system. Our main contribution is a set of techniques to speed up simulation of processors and peripherals without significant loss in timing accuracy. Finally, we describe applications used to test the co-simulator and our experience in using it.

The in-circuit emulator (ICE) is commonly adopted as a microprocessor debugging technique. In this paper, a parameterized embedded in-circuit emulator and its retargetable debugging software are proposed. The parameterized embedded in-circuit emulator can be integrated into different style processors such as microcontroller, microprocessor, and DSP processor. The GUI interface debugging software can help user to debug easily. As a result of it, the duration of microprocessor debugging design procedure time is reduced.

For the traditional SRGMs, it is assumed that a detected fault is immediately removed and is perfectly repaired with no new faults being introduced. In reality, it is impossible to remove all faults from the fault correction process and have a fault-free effect on the software development environment. In order to relax this perfect debugging assumption, we introduce the possibility of imperfect debugging phenomenon. Furthermore, most of the traditional SRGMs have focused on the failure detection process. Consideration of fault correction process in the existing models is limited. However, to achieve desired level of software quality, it is very important to apply powerful technologies for removing the errors in the fault correction process. Therefore, we divide these processes into different two nonhomogeneous Poisson processes (NHPPs). Moreover, these models are considered to be more practical to depict the fault-removal phenomenon in software development.

software debugging in hardware simulation environments is often inconvenient and extremely slow. The BackC method described in this paper allows one to reproduce accurately the simulated code flow under a conventional pure software debugging environment, while greatly decreasing the test turnaround time, thereby drastically reducing debugging time. The described method has been successfully implemented and used during a chip hardware and embedded software co-design. It can be applied to any conventional simulation environment used for co-design verification.
