Modelling software development methodologies: A conceptual foundation

Current modelling approaches often purport to be based on a strong theoretical underpinning but, in fact, contain many ill-defined concepts or even contradictions leading to potential misinterpretation. Although much modelling in object-oriented contexts is focussed on the use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML), this paper presents a technology-agnostic approach that analyses the basic concepts of structural models and modelling in software engineering, using an approach based on representation theory. We examine the different kinds of interpretive mappings (either isotypical, prototypical or metatypical) that are required in order to trace model entities back to the SUS (subject under study) entities that they represent. The difference between forward- and backward-looking models is also explained, as are issues relating to the appropriate definition of modelling languages in general based on representation theory. The need for product and process integration in methodologies is then addressed, leading to the conclusion that a mesh of verbal plus nominal nodes is necessary in any methodology metamodel. Finally, the need for a common, cross-cutting modelling infrastructure is established, and a solution proposed in the form of an ontologically universal modelling language, OOLang. Examples of the application of these theoretical analyses to the suite of OMG products (particularly SPEM, UML and MOF) are given throughout, with the hope that awareness of the importance of a better modelling infrastructure can be developed. Service-Oriented software Engineering is based on concepts and principles for constructing complex enterprise systems in which services as building block of the system, are distributed in large networks. The main goal of the service-oriented methodologies is to define a process for development and maintenance of service-based systems. Most of the Service-Oriented methodologies are not mature enough compared with traditional software development methodologies such as Object-Oriented or Component-Based. Hence, defining an evaluation framework will be useful for comparing methodologies for identifying their strengths and weaknesses, defining new methodologies or extending existing Service-Oriented methodologies. At the time being, there is no complete evaluation framework for evaluating Service-Oriented methodologies. The principal objective of this paper is to introduce a comprehensive evaluation framework for evaluating Service-Oriented methodologies. Probabilistic and analytical estimation of software development team size

Labor cost is one of the major contributors of software development cost. Among the variables that affects labor cost is the software development team size. There are very few methods available in literature to determine software development team size because team size selection happens during early stages of software development, and varies throughout systems development cycle. Under such circumstances, only methods that can be used to predict team size are Bayesian and analytical methods. In this paper, we use both Bayesian and analytical methods to predict team size. Specifically, we use a hybrid Bayesian network and simulation methodology for estimating posterior distributions of the team size using a real-world software engineering dataset, and a Cobb-Douglas function to estimate optimal team size. Using the leave-one-out sampling, we test our Bayesian approach and find that our approach predicts appropriate team size category with over 90% accuracy. However, our tests with optimal team size indicate that less than 20% of real-world software projects use optimal team size.

IS project alignment - a process perspective

Information system (IS) project alignment has been defined as the degree to which an IS's project deliverables are consistent with the project's objectives, which are shaped by the organization's IS strategy. These objectives may change as the project unfolds, reflecting emergent opportunities, limitations, and strategy (Jenkin and Chan, 2005). The IS project alignment process refers to the sequence and flow of events that lead to project alignment and, thus, strategy execution. To develop an understanding of project alignment processes - how IS projects become aligned or misaligned - this study examines nine projects across two organizational settings to analyze the key events and processes of project alignment. By analyzing three different project patterns using different organizational metaphors, this study explains evidence contradicting widely held beliefs about project management. Rather than planning and process maturity, the results of this study highlight the importance of executing processes, change, learning, knowing in practice, and heedful interrelating between project team members to align final project deliverables. This research, based on an empirical study, contributes to both the IS alignment and project management literatures by further developing the emerging concept of project alignment to include a process view of how to achieve alignment of final project deliverables with IS project objectives and the IS strategy. software development methodologies usually contain guidance on what steps to follow in order to obtain the desired product. At the same time, capability assessment frameworks usually assess the process that is followed on a project in practice in the context of a process reference model, defined separately and independently of any particular methodology. This results in the need for extra effort when trying to match a given process reference model with an organisation's enacted processes. This paper introduces a metamodel for the definition of assessable methodologies, that is, methodologies that are constructed with assessment in mind and that contain a built-in process reference model. Organisations using methodologies built from this metamodel will benefit from automatically ensuring that their executed work conforms to the appropriate assessment model.

Towards Structured Flexibility in Information Systems development: Devising a Method for Method Configuration

Method configuration is a specific type of Method Engineering (ME) that takes an existing organization-wide Information Systems development Method (ISDM) as its point of departure. Existing assembly-based ME approaches are not well suited to this task. As an alternative, this article suggests a metamethod approach to tailoring organization-wide ISDMs. We refer to this approach as the Method for Method Configuration (MMC). MMC takes into account the need to combine structure, which is one reason for choosing an organization-wide ISDM in the first place, with flexibility, which is essential for making the chosen ISDM fit actual projects. The metamethod is built using a three-layered reuse model comprising method components, configuration packages, and configuration templates. Inadequate levels of Data Quality (DQ) in Information Systems (IS) suppose a very important problem for organizations. In any case, they look for to assure data quality from earlier stages on information system developments. This paper proposes to incorporate mechanisms into software development methodologies, in order to integrate users DQ requirements aimed at assuring the data quality from the beginning of development. It brings a framework consisting of processes, activities and tasks, well defined, which would be incorporated in existent software development methodology, as METRICA V3;and therefore, to assure software product data quality created according to this methodology. The extension presented, is a guideline, and this can be extended and applied to other development methodologies like Unified development Process.

Metamodelling provides a way of modelling the rules underpinning not only modelling languages such as UML but also processes. In the context of object-oriented development, we evaluate the conceptual framework used to reason about metamodelling from the different perspectives of methodologist, method engineer and software developer. We propose the use of clabjets and powertype patterns as a solution to avoid the present inconsistencies in the use of a strict metamodelling multi-level hierarchy and demonstrate their efficacy in providing a solid and improved framework for OO-based process (and product) metamodelling.

THE OPEN SOURCE MOVEMENT: A REVOLUTION IN software development

The open source movement is based on a radical retake on copyright law to create high quality software whose use and development are guaranteed to the public. In this article we trace the history of the movement, highlighting its interaction with intellectual property law. The movement has spawned open source software (OSS) communities where developers and users meet to create software that meets their needs. We discuss the demographic profile of OSS participants, their ideology, their motivations, and the process of OSS development. Then we examine the impacts of OSS on society as a whole from the perspective of the information society, discussing the effects on OSS developers, users of OSS, and society at large, particularly in developing countries.
