In seeking to complement consultants' and tool vendors' reports, there has been an increasing academic focus on understanding the adoption and use of software development methods and practices. We surveyed practitioners working in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand in a transnational study to contribute to these efforts. Among our findings we observed that most of the 184 practitioners in our sample focused on a small portfolio of projects that were of short duration. In addition, Scrum and Kanban were used most;however, some practitioners also used conventional methods. Coding Standards, Simple Design and Refactoring were used most by practitioners, and these practices were held to be largely suitable for project and process management. Our evidence points to the need to properly understand and support a wide range of software methods.

Participatory Data Design: Managing Data Sovereignty in IoT Solutions

Within the software engineering community, deciding how to collect, store and use personal data has become about more than just understanding our users. This paper considers ethical data use that includes cultural considerations and data ownership rights. We discuss indigenous data sovereignty as a concept and how it potentially impacts technological solutions that gather personal data from users. We propose an extension to typical user-centred design processes, which we call participatory data design. This incorporates the use of frameworks and tools that specifically focus on managing data within the cultural context it is gathered from. We also present a specific example of how we have used this approach in the context of a data collection project from Maori workers in New Zealand forestry. We conclude with a discussion of the wider implications of this approach.

software development methods have been evolved to enable producing usable systems rapidly while considering all requirements. Several studies have focused on the need to balance between rapid development and capturing requirements related to user experience and business workflow. This balance has become more urging during COVID19 because many businesses want to quickly transfer to usable electronic systems that are accurate, efficient, easy to learn, satisfy users and support remote work. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework by integrating Rapid Application development (RAD) method with Participatory Design (PD) method for enabling rapid production of usable systems. Both RAD and PD consist of design stages that can overlap and generate new phases where users participate in the design process and accelerate the production. Five usability tests are also added to the framework to validate the usability of the design at all stages. The Action Research method is used to assess the framework empirically in a context of an urgent need to an electronic system, and qualitative data analyses were conducted. The results show that the framework can be adopted by software companies because it satisfies the requirements of adopting software development methods. Also, the system developed using the framework is usable. The paper concludes that COVID19 affects software development by emphasizing rapid development while maintaining workflow. Also, using video conference for remote design assists in meeting users more frequently and in creating concise requirement documentation.

Misinterpretations and faulty use of software development Method (SDM) practices and principles are identified pitfalls in software development (SD). Previous research indicates cases with method adoption and use failures;one reason could be the SDM Cargo Cult (CC) behavior, where SD organizations claim to be agile but not doing agile. Previous research has suggested the SDM CC framework as an analytical tool. The aim of this paper is to refine the SDM CC framework and empirically test this version of the framework. We use data from an ethnographical study on three SD teams' Daily Scrum Meetings (DSM). The empirical material was collected through observations, interviews, and the organization's business documents. We uncovered twelve CC situations in the SD teams' use of the DSM practice, structured into seven categories of SDM deviations: bringing irrelevant information, canceling meetings, disturbing the team, receiving unclear information, bringing new requirements, problem-solving, and task distribution.

DevOps has become an increasingly popular approach to software development and operations. DevOps has evolved rapidly in recent years, with numerous maturity models being proposed to help organizations assess their level of adoption and identify improvement areas. However, there is no consensus on which model is the most effective, as different models may be more suited to different organizational contexts. This paper compares six popular DevOps maturity models using the Fuzzy TOPSIS Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Fuzzy TOPSIS is a popular MCDM technique that can handle imprecise and uncertain information. We analyze each model based on seven criteria: Culture, Automation, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery, Monitoring and Feedback, Security, Metrics and Measurement, and Continuous Learning and Improvement, and determine which model is the most suitable according to industry standards. The analysis revealed that Radstaak's DevOps maturity model outperforms the others when evaluated through seven standard criteria for assessing maturity models.

Failed software projects, delayed deliveries and unsatisfied users are topics that we read on almost daily basis on the media. We're so used to unsuccessful software projects that we do not even seem to expect projects to provide real value to the users. Simultaneously, the societies are more dependent on the software than ever and huge amount of people make their living out of software engineering related jobs. We are investing substantially in the education and training in the software domain and emphasize modern technologies and practices in the education. A consensus exists within the academia and industry on how to effectively develop information systems: with iterative and user-centered methodologies that focus on continuous improvement, i.e. agile methods. Somehow, still, these great ideas and principles do not materialize in practice in software projects;we seem to encounter failing projects and unhappy clients more than succeeding projects with happy end-users. My claim is that we are not doing the best we can, and we know better what we should do when creating and maintaining software intensive systems. The structures that inhibit us from providing the best value possible for the user are often related to bad communication and/or non-disciplined ways of working. Many of the obstacles can be avoided through servitization: better collaboration, more user-centered development methods and iterative approaches.

Currently, the software development organizations are adopting DevOps practices in order to develop quality product. Due to the lack of definition of DevOps, the principles, practices, and methods adopted in DevOps to determine success have changed substantially. There are several benefits of DevOps can be achieved if the DevOps practices are implemented effectively and efficiently. This study has been conducted to identify the DevOps practices that contribute to achieve a high level of DevOps. The qualitative and interpretive approach have been used for analyzing the HELENA2 dataset. The maturity is calculated using 36 DevOps practices based on the four different classifications: (1) rarely used DevOps, (2) sometimes used DevOps, (3) often used DevOps, and (4) always used DevOps with the help of degrees of addressing 18 goals. The maturity score for the different categories indicates that organizations that use DevOps always are more mature to achieve goals than organizations that use it rarely. © 2022 ACM.

"Technical excellence" is a nebulous term in agile software development. This vagueness is risky, as it creates a gap in the understanding of agile that may have consequences on how software development practitioners operate. Technical excellence is the only reference to quality in the agile manifesto. Hence, it is fundamental to understand how agile software development practitioners both interpret and implement it. We conducted interviews with twenty agile practitioners about their understanding of the term "technical excellence" and how they approach the task of fostering it. To validate the findings, two focus group meetings were conducted after the interviews and the analysis of the data were completed. We found that the configuration of technical excellence is made of four traits: (1) software craftsmanship;(2) software quality (3) mindset for excellence;and (4) consistency with good software engineering practices. Fostering technical excellence is a continuous endeavor. Further, we identified three key principles that were commonly cited as essential to implementing technical excellence, namely: 1) continuous learning;2) continuous improvement;and 3) control of excellence. Based on our findings, we present several recommendations for software development teams seeking to better realize the goal of technical excellence in their agile implementation.

Context: Technical excellence is a nebulous term in agile software development. This vagueness is risky because it may lead to misunderstandings and to agile implementations that may overlook a key principle of agile development. Objective: This study investigates how agile practitioners interpret the concept of technical excellence brought up in Principle 9 of the Agile manifesto. Moreover, we investigate how agile practitioners put the concept into practice and what conditions facilitate putting technical excellence into practice. methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty agile practitioners, coded the data inductively, and performed two sessions to validate the emerging findings. Results: We find that technical excellence is first and foremost a mindset that is underpinned by continuous attention to sustainable code, continuous learning, and teamwork. Fostering technical excellence requires the adoption of design and development practices, such as continuous architecting, and is supported by continuous learning. We also identify three enabling conditions for technical excellence: Leadership support, customer buyin, and psychological safety. These enablers provide teams with leeway to nurture their pursuit of technical excellence. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the key role of people-based strategies in promoting technical excellence in agile software development. They show that the attainment of technical excellence does not only involve technical practices. On the contrary, it relies on social and organizational support and, most importantly, a mindset.

Even though virtual reality (VR) technologies promise to boost efficiency because their three-dimensionality, virtuality and interactivity and enable simple and objectified access to object and process information representations, the design and implementation of VR systems that support major industrial and infrastructure project planning is largely case-based, permitting virtually no systematic improvement. The ViRe-in(2)-methodology presented combines a structured, iterative process for VR planning of major industrial and infrastructure projects with the integrability of established, domain-specific methods and inherent cycles of self-optimization. The complexity of the requirements in this challenging domain is already being met systematically with effectively employed VR approaches.
