We study two textbooks for teaching undergraduate software engineering, both focusing on software design and data abstraction in particular. We describe the differences in their didactic approaches. We analyze how the subject matter is influenced by the choice of programming language, one book using Ada and the other book using Java. Java is a relatively new candidate for teaching software engineering. How does it compare to Ada?

The development of good quality software is a critical element of successful competition for today's software market shares. However, software products are becoming larger and more complex;therefore, the development of quality software is neither easy nor rapid. Agile software development methods focus on generating early releases of working products. They aim to deliver business value immediately from the beginning of the project. Regardless of the development method in use, it is important that software development be under control. software configuration management (SCM) is known as a method of bringing control to the software development process, and thus, proper application of SCM is a key component in the development of quality software. However, currently very few studies on software configuration management in agile methods exist;hence this study. The aim of this publication is to systematically review the existing literature on agile software development methodologies from an SCM point of view. First, analytical SCM lenses based on existing SCM literature are constructed. Second, existing agile methods are analyzed using the lenses constructed. The results show that only two of the existing agile methods take SCM explicitly into account, but most of the methods highly value SCM tool support and its ability to revert to earlier versions of development artefacts. Nonetheless, the basis for successful SCM implementation, SCM planning, has been completely forgotten. Copyright © VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland 2003.

Leaving inconsistency using fuzzy logic

Current software development methods do not provide adequate means to model inconsistencies and therefore force software engineers to resolve inconsistencies whenever they are detected. Certain kinds of inconsistencies, however, are desirable and should be maintained as long as possible. For instance, when multiple conflicting solutions exist for the same problem, each solution should be preserved to allow further refinements along the development process. An early resolution of inconsistencies may result in loss of information and excessive restriction of the design space. This paper aims to enhance the current methods by modeling and controlling the desired inconsistencies through the application of fuzzy logic-based techniques. It is shown that the proposed approach increases the adaptability and reusability of design models. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Exceptions in OO languages: Using them and reasoning about them 5th

Exceptions are generally considered as signals with little or no internal structure to them. Using such exceptions, a method can signal to its caller that the operation could not be completed properly, and let the caller take appropriate corrective action. While this is sufficient to deal with simple situations, it severely limits the information that the method can provide to the caller when the exception is raised. In order to solve this problem, some OO languages treat exceptions as full-fledged objects. This adds to the power of the exception mechanism, but it also adds to the difficulty of the already complex task of understanding the behavior of programs that utilize exceptions. Hence, in order to effectively exploit the power of these mechanisms, we need appropriate techniques that can be used to reason precisely about the behavior of systems built using them. This paper develops such techniques and demonstrates their usefulness via some simple examples.

When are methods complementary?

In this article, we address the issue of when software development methods are complementary, i.e., we determine when a method is capable of a task that another method cannot perform. Our intent is to examine complementarity in order to help determine when to carry out,method integration. Here, we propose some factors for method complementarity, and suggest that context-dependent criteria, such as real-world domain and non-functional development requirements, may have a significant impact on method complementarity. Models and languages for parallel computation

We survey parallel programming models and languages using six criteria to assess their suitability for realistic portable parallel programming. We argue that an ideal model should be easy to program, should have a software development methodology, should be architecture-independent, should be easy to understand, should guarantee performance, and should provide accurate information about the cost of programs. These criteria reflect our belief that developments in parallelism must be driven by a parallel software industry based on portability and efficiency. We consider programming models in six categories, depending on the level of abstraction they provide. Those that are very abstract conceal even the presence of parallelism at the software level. Such models make software easy to build and port, but efficient and predictable performance is usually hard to achieve. At the other end of the spectrum, low-level models make all of the messy issues of parallel programming explicit (how many threads, how to place them, how to express communication, and how to schedule communication), so that software is hard to build and not very portable, but is usually efficient. Most recent models are near the center of this spectrum, exploring the best tradeoffs between expressiveness and performance. A few models have achieved both abstractness and efficiency. Both kinds of models raise the possibility of parallelism as part of the mainstream of computing.

Current practice in software engineering: a survey

The results of a survey carried out between November 1995 and March 1996 are given. The aim of the survey was to see exactly how widely software engineering techniques were being adopted in the UK today. The rationale behind the survey was simple: to see which of a selected set of software engineering techniques were being used. The techniques included in the survey were: methods and methodologies, standards, CASE tools and software engineering process quality manuals. Several other general questions were also asked. The results were surprising, and showed a considerable lack of use of software engineering practices, despite evidence of a strong urge to conform with international standards.

A Formal Framework For Specifying Design methods

The main objective of this paper is to put forward a software process model for high-performance systems (HPS), and to present a formal framework to describe software design methodologies (SDM) for those systems. The framework consists of two main parts: the software process activities which characterize the development of HPS, and the components of the SDM (concepts, artifacts, representation and actions) which are essential for any methodology. The framework relates these two parts by identifying generic components of each activity in the software process that can be used to classify and evaluate SDM for HPS. Another important property of the framework is that it has been formally specified using the language Z. As a result, it is also used to derive formal specifications of SDM. This is illustrated in the paper by presenting part of the specification of oDM (an occam design method). © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. and Gauthier-Villars

A CATALOGING FRAMEWORK FOR software-development methods

A framework providing a basis for comparing and evaluating software development methods (SDMs), which are systems of technical procedures and notational conventions for the organized construction of software-based systems, is presented. Using the framework, practitioners and methodologists can describe and rate an SDM's support for 21 properties. The application of the framework to two examples, OMT and R.J.A. Buhr's (1990) architectural design, is discussed. Several suggested uses of the framework include: comparing a group of SDMs with one another; defining a standard in terms of the framework and then using this as a basis for discussion; examining an SDM to discover its coverage and capabilities; and combining the properties of different SDMs to create a new SDM

TOWARD A METHOD OF OBJECT-ORIENTED CONCURRENT PROGRAMMING

The article describes an object-oriented language model of concurrency that deals with reusability and methodology. The model presented in this article makes extensive use of object-oriented techniques such as inheritance and polymorphism. This article has presented a model of concurrent programming using several unification's of concepts. It allows design of a concurrent system as a collection of abstract data types. The exception-based communication reconciles asynchrony and efficiency. Another point on which to focus is the asynchronous routine call combined with the sole and systematic data-driven synchronization, wait-by- necessity. This feature brings together the safety of structured programming with the power of asynchrony. A technique has been developed on top of the model to permit the reuse of the process live routines. This is achieved by defining the process body in a more declarative manner. The method first decomposes the system into a structured collection of sequential classes. The real time specifications of the system are left aside during this decisive stage of the system development.
