The dovetailing of design and documentation is characteristic for many mature engineering disciplines. In electrical engineering, for example, a circuit diagram is a means and technique for both designing and documenting. software engineering falls short in this respect, especially when it comes to architectural issues. Design patterns can help here. Using both form and content of design patterns promotes the principle of documenting by designing. Our experience report presents some examples of this principle taken from an evaluation project at SAP, Germany.

Scientific software often involves many input and output variables. Identifying these variables is important for such software engineering tasks as metamorphic testing. To reduce the manual work, we report in this paper our investigation of machine learning algorithms in classifying variables from software's user manuals. We identify thirteen natural-language features, and use them to develop a multi-layer solution where the first layer distinguishes variables from non-variables and the second layer classifies the variables into input and output types. Our experimental results on three scientific software systems show that random forest and feedforward neural network can be used to best implement the first layer and second layer respectively.

Every software system (ideally) comes with one or more forms of documentation. Beside source code comments, other structured and unstructured sources (e.g., design documents, API references, wikis, usage examples, tutorials) constitute critical assets. Cloud-based repositories for collaborative development (e.g., GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab) provide many functionalities to create, persist, and version documentation artifacts. On the other hand, the last decade has seen the rise of rich instant messaging clients used as global software community platforms (e.g., Slack, Discord). Although completely detached from a specific versioning system or development workflow, they allow developers to discuss implementation issues, report bugs, and, in general, interact with one another. We refer to this evolving heterogeneous collection of information sources and documentation artifacts as the documentation landscape. It is important to have tools to extract information from these sources and integrate them in a topological visualization, to ease comprehension of a software system. How can we automatically generate this topology? How can we link elements in the topology back to the source code they refer to? The goal of this PhD research is to automatically mine the documentation landscape of a system by disclosing pieces of information to aid, for example, in program maintenance tasks. We present our classification of possible documentation sources. The long term vision is to provide a domain model of the documentation landscape to build, visualize, and explore its instances for real software systems and evaluate the usefulness of the metaphor we propose.

To meet an immediate need in a new market, the corporation needed a customer document for installing a suite of tools that had previously been installed only by experienced service engineers. More than one support engineer had written a short document describing the installation tasks, but these documents pre-supposed a high level of expertise on the pail of the installer. The challenge presented to Information Engineering was to create, from two such documents, a text that a customer could use to install the software tools. With the help of a world-wide team, internet tools, and two virtual sessions following user-centered design practices, a customer-oriented document was successfully created quickly at very low cost. software engineering has come to the stage where speed of development, level of correctness, interoperability, user friendliness, usefulness, and reusability in different projects are very important factors in determining the success of a software engineering venture. Equally important is the use of methodologies for software design. In just over six decades, we have seen the progress of software design from an amorphous set of informal methodologies to structured techniques, formal methodologies, and object-oriented methodologies. In the area of object-oriented methodologies (OOM), the unified modeling language (UML) has made a significant contribution in defining a set of methodologies that can be applied to any software engineering effort. This paper draws on the UML methodologies and proposes three methodologies that could add richness and additional flexibility to the software engineering experience. They are system topology charts, object/entity specification grid, and the extended operation specification. The system topology charts include an information topology chart (ITC) that presents the object types and/or information entities in the way they will be managed in the software system, and a user interface topology chart (UITC) that presents operations the way they will appear in the system. The object/entity specification grid (O/ESG) adopts the conventions of the UML class diagram, but expands it to include additional critical information that lead to better software construction. The extended operation specification (EOS) embraces the UML guidelines for the activity diagram, but is flexible enough to include other techniques such as pseudo-code, Warnier-Orr diagram, and collaboration diagram. It also allows for the specification of other critical information not covered in these standard techniques.

The release note is an essential software artifact of open-source software that documents crucial information about changes, such as new features and bug fixes. With the help of release notes, both developers and users could have a general understanding of the latest version without browsing the source code. However, it is a daunting and time-consuming job for developers to produce release notes. Although prior studies have provided some automatic approaches, they generate release notes mainly by extracting information from code changes. This will result in language-specific and not being general enough to be applicable. Therefore, helping developers produce release notes effectively remains an unsolved challenge. To address the problem, we first conduct a manual study on the release notes of 900 GitHub projects, which reveals that more than 54% of projects produce their release notes with pull requests. Based on the empirical finding, we propose a deep learning based approach named DeepRelease (Deep learning based Release notes generator) to generate release notes according to pull requests. The process of release notes generation in DeepRelease includes the change entries generation and the change category (Le., new features or bug fixes) generation, which are formulated as a text summarization task and a multi-class classification problem, respectively. Since DeepRelease fully employs text information from pull requests to summarize changes and identify the change category, it is language-agnostic and can be used for projects in any language. We build a dataset with over 46K release notes and evaluate DeepRelease on the dataset. The experimental results indicate that DeepRelease outperforms four baselines and can generate release notes similar to those manually written ones in a fraction of the time.

Developing interactive systems often involves a large set of callback functions for handling user interaction, which makes it challenging to manage UI behaviors, create descriptive documentation, and track code revisions. We developed Doppio, a tool that automatically tracks and visualizes UI flows and their changes based on source code. For each input event listener of a widget, e.g., onClick of an Android View class, Doppio captures and associates its UI output from a program execution with its code snippet from the codebase. It automatically generates a screenflow diagram organized by the callback methods and interaction flow, where developers can review the code and UI revisions interactively. Doppio, as an IDE plugin, is seamlessly integrated into a common development workflow. Our studies show that our tool is able to generate quality visual documentation and helped participants understand unfamiliar source code and track changes.

Code comments are important for program comprehension, development, and maintenance tasks. Given the varying standards for code comments, and their unstructured or semi-structured nature, developers get easily confused (especially novice developers) about which convention(s) to follow, or what tools to use while writing code documentation. Thus, they post related questions on external online sources to seek better commenting practices. In this paper, we analyze code comment discussions on online sources such as Stack Overflow (SO) and Quora to shed some light on the questions developers ask about commenting practices. We apply Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to identify emerging topics concerning code comments. Then we manually analyze a statistically significant sample set of posts to derive a taxonomy that provides an overview of the developer questions about commenting practices. Our results highlight that on SO nearly 40% of the questions mention how to write or process comments in documentation tools and environments, and nearly 20% of the questions are about potential limitations and possibilities of documentation tools to add automatically and consistently more information in comments. On the other hand, on Quora, developer questions focus more on background information (35% of the questions) or asking opinions (16% of the questions) about code comments. We found that (i) not all aspects of comments are covered in coding style guidelines, e.g., how to add a specific type of information, (ii) developers need support in learning the syntax and format conventions to add various types of information in comments, and (iii) developers are interested in various automated strategies for comments such as detection of bad comments, or verify comment style automatically, but lack tool support to do that.

Living-Off-The-Land attacks involve exploiting pre-installed genuine and trusted software for malicious purposes. The various methods available for detecting these attacks often rely on an in-depth understanding of the software components that attackers could abuse. This hypothesis is unrealistic today given the number of software components installed on a system and the number of options available for each software component. We present in this article an open access dataset built from the deep analysis performed by security experts of 912 options from 23 different Linux command-line software programs. The associated manual documentation section of these command options has been labelled according to one of 12 possible behaviour classes from our consolidated taxonomy. Our contributions represent an important step toward understanding system-wide software execution as combinations and chains of individual behaviours regardless of the underlying software.

Code examples are of great value to programmers trying to learn an unfamiliar API. Effective code examples are often surrounded with plain text explanations of the relevant concepts, techniques, and API elements involved in the example. However, authoring concise yet complete explanations is a challenging balancing act. To address this challenge, we propose Casdoc, a novel authoring technique and presentation format for annotated code examples. Casdoc-formatted code examples are HTML documents designed to embed unobtrusive explanations into the code. They thus contain more explanations to address the varying needs of a larger audience, without disrupting individual readers with information they already know. Explanations are split into short annotations and organized into an intuitive tree-like structure, thus supporting a streamlined authoring process. We used Casdoc to produce 105 Java code examples as part of the course material for an undergraduate computer science course. Students preferred the new format over traditional code examples. Their interaction with code examples suggests that the intuitive structure of Casdoc annotations reduces the need for navigation aids such as search fields.
