software engineering (SE) education shapes the perspectives taken by future software engineers. SE processes/methods represent an important knowledge area demanded by industry and curriculum guidelines but belong to those knowledge areas, which are challenging to be taught intuitively accessible. Just providing islands of knowledge is not sufficient in SE education. It has to provide students with the ability to focus on details demanded by stakeholders, technology, and the project environment but to keep a holistic view of the SE endeavor at the same time. To develop demanded competencies-knowledge, skills, and attitudes-SE education has to enable learning experiences where concepts, methods, and tools are perceived as actually supportive, providing orientation and guidance. Taking the high and increasing number of varying existing SE processes/methods into account, the knowledge provided has to be highly transferable to prepare students for their future SE endeavors. This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in summer semester 2016 to evaluate an Integrated Approach introducing students to SE methods based on simulation, Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL), and SEMAT Essence.

Incorporation of a software engineering evaluation method in an educational software course in Turkey

The research literature identifies the limitations of pre-service teacher training in the evaluation and assessment of educational software for classroom use. This study investigated the enhancement of IT pre-service teacher training in educational software evaluation through the incorporation of software evaluation techniques from the software engineering discipline. Participants in this study were 25 final year pre-service IT teachers at Faculty of Education at a public university in Turkey. The pre-service teachers were introduced to the software engineering evaluation methods and an instructional educational software evaluation method. The results illustrated that the software engineering evaluation methods enhanced the technical evaluation skills of pre-service teachers and increased their confidence. Pre-service teachers reported that they considered themselves more professional after applying these methods. We believe this work highlighted a method to enhance the educational software evaluation skills of IT pre-service teachers through combining technical evaluation skills with traditional educational methods.

The main aim of software engineering is to develop a software system, which fulfils the user requirements within time and budget constraints. This paper uses the multi-dimensional Resource Space Model to manage multiple types of software engineering processes and maps their features into multiple dimensions for supporting analysis, development and maintenance of software system. Two case studies show that the Resource Space Model is feasible to use for managing the software processes and data.

What does it mean to use a method? Towards a practice theory for software engineering

Context: methods and processes, along with the tools to support them, are at the heart of software engineering as a discipline. However, as we all know, that often the use of the same method neither impacts software projects in a comparable manner nor the software they result in. What is lacking is an understanding of how methods affect software development. Objective: The article develops a set of concepts based on the practice-concept in philosophy of sociology as a base to describe software development as social practice, and develop an understanding of methods and their application that explains the heterogeneity in the outcome. Practice here is not understood as opposed to theory, but as a commonly agreed upon way of acting that is acknowledged by the team. Method: The article applies concepts from philosophy of sociology and social theory to describe software development and develops the concepts of method and method usage. The results and steps in the philosophical argumentation are exemplified using published empirical research. Results: The article develops a conceptual base for understanding software development as social and epistemic practices, and defines methods as practice patterns that need to be related to, and integrated in, an existing development practice. The application of a method is conceptualized as a development of practice. This practice is in certain aspects aligned with the description of the method, but a method always under-defines practice. The implication for research, industrial software development and teaching are indicated. Conclusion: The theoretical/philosophical concepts allow the explaining of heterogeneity in application of software engineering methods in line with empirical research results. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. software processes and software engineering (SE) methods belong to those knowledge areas which are challenging to be taught intuitively accessible. The specification "Kernel and Language for software engineering methods (Essence)" [1] claims to deliver an approach to consolidate all essential dimensions of SE-endeavors into an universal compact and actionable kernel. This paper describes the characteristics of the Essence specification with respect to its suitability for use in academic SE education where students get introduced to the world of SE methods and software processes. To enable a deep understanding of the Essence concepts in an academic setting a suitable approach is needed. The integrated approach presented in this paper introduces students stepwise into the concepts of Essence. It lets them explore the concepts in a virtual simulated game environment and finally deploy them in real world SE endeavors. Thereby an efficient and engaging learning arrangement supports the active construction of knowledge. It encourages active exploration, enables the viewing of the learning object from different perspectives and promotes articulation and reflection in social interchange early in the learning process. Key objectives of this approach are to sensitize students for the diversity of dimensions that have to be taken into account in a SE endeavor, to provide a valuable guidance for using SE methods inside and outside of their curriculum and to enable students to transfer their newly acquired knowledge to other contexts.

CLPL: Providing software infrastructure for the systematic and effective construction of complex collaborative learning systems

Over the last decade, e-Learning and in particular Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) needs have been evolving accordingly with more and more demanding pedagogical and technological requirements. As a result, high customization and flexibility are a must in this context, meaning that collaborative learning practices need to be continuously adapted, adjusted, and personalized to each specific target learning group. These very demanding needs of the CSCL domain represent a great challenge for the research community on software development to satisfy. This contribution presents and evaluates a previous research effort in the form of a generic software infrastructure called Collaborative Learning Purpose Library (CLPL) with the aim of meeting the current and demanding needs found in the CSCL domain. To this end, we experiment with the CLPL in order to offer an advanced reuse-based service-oriented software engineering methodology for developing CSCL applications in an effective and timely fashion. A validation process is provided by reporting on the use of the CLPL platform as the primary resource for the Master's thesis courses at the Open University of Catalonia when developing complex software applications in the CSCL domain. The ultimate aim of the whole research is to yield effective CSCL software systems capable of supporting and enhancing the current on-line collaborative learning practices. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Most modern companies realise that the best way to improve stability and earning in the global, rapidly changing world is to be innovating and produce software that will be fully used and appreciated by customers. The key aspect on this road is personnel and processes. In the paper we review self-organised teams proposing several new approaches and constraints ensuring such teams' stability and efficiency. The paper also introduce a semi-self organised teams, which are in the short-term time perspective as the same reliable as fully self-organised teams and much simpler to organise and support.

Fred Brooks argued in 1986 that, for various reasons, no software engineering silver bullet would be found in the next decade. I argue now that the main reason that there can be no software engineering silver bullet is that as soon as one is produced, we software engineers move on almost immediately to solve even harder problems for which the silver bullet does not help much. That a silver bullet quickly ceases to be silver is the basic conundrum of software engineering silver bullets.

In this paper we present our approach to design and develop an enterprise email application called bluemail. We describe our development process that is orchestrated for fast, iterative deployments and aimed at offering increased transparency to our internal user community. We finish by discussing the relationship between iterative design and agile development practices.

Modelling hypermedia and web applications:: the Ariadne Development Method

The development process of hypermedia and web systems poses very specific problems that do not appear in other software applications, such as the need for mechanisms to model sophisticated navigational structures, interactive behaviors, interfaces with external applications, security constraints and multimedia compositions. Even though experience, modelling skills and abstractions can be borrowed from existing software design methods, such as object-oriented modelling, hypertnedia developers need specific mechanisms to analyze and design using entities that belong to the hypertnedia domain (such as nodes, links, anchors and space and time-based relationships). Moreover, hypermedia methods should provide mechanisms to deal with all the aforementioned features in a progressive and integrated way. In this paper, we present the Ariadne Development Method (ADM), a software engineering method that proposes a systematic, flexible, integrative and platform-independent process to specify and evaluate hypermedia and web applications. ADM has been shown particularly useful in complex systems involving a huge number of users with different abilities to access information, with a complex structure where a huge number of nodes have to be organized in a clear way to produce specifications that are discussed by people with an heterogeneous background. This is the case of ARCE, a Latin American project where 21 countries are cooperating to produce a web platform to improve assistance in disaster mitigation situations. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
