In the course of process improvement, software organizations attempt to concurrently implement practices that originate from different models, extracting the best from each. Issues of integration and compliance are raised due to missing conceptual view. This paper presents a new method for an explicit alignment between SPEM-based software process modeling and CMMI corpus of best practices. The alignment of process activities with CMMI goes beyond the maturity assessment;it sustains the conceptualization of introducing new software engineering practices at the process-level and open a new topic of combining conceptually parts of different process models. Our method extends the SPEM Meta-model by introducing new interface to CMMI Meta-data. This extension allows visualization of the practices' intentions within the activity breakdown structure. In addition, it offers a conceptual assessment of process maturity level according to CMMI scales. The method has been fully implemented in a process modeling tool and applied in both academic and industrial contexts to justify improvement opportunities through meaningful dashboards.

software processes are recognized as fundamental assets in development organizations since they support the capability to produce better products. A means for handling the complexity of these processes is through models, and software process modeling languages (SPMLs) are languages to express those processes. Different requirements for SPMLs have been identified by some authors, but accessibility is not one of them. There is little empirical evidence of the use of software processes by people with accessibility difficulties in software organizations. The goal of this case study is to investigate what are the requirements to make software processes become accessible. The subjects are users of a methodology called NDT and its support tools, and who have a kind of disability. The objective is to know the main requirements in order to read and execute software processes and become a process engineer. software development processes are always subject to permanent evolution during enactment in process-centred software Engineering Environments (PSEE). Current process models are not enough flexible to allow both late and early deviation handling, it is true they are able to manage the evolution and fix the variations by reproducing the activities which were not executed during enactment, but they are not able to manage the execution process and changes dynamically and smartly. This article presents a new approach to process enactment evolution, based on dynamic adaptation;Deviations are defined as operations that violate process constraints. Once a deviation is detected, a dynamic adaptation model is used to decide the new activity or set of activities to be launched to reproduce requested inputs and outputs and to handle the deviation impact.

the growing demand for higher trustworthiness of software poses an unprecedented challenge to the software industry. software is the outcome of the software process. software trustworthiness is highly dependent on the software process. To combine the trustworthiness in the software process, we propose a formal method for trustworthy software process composition. In this method, trustworthy processes are specified by the trustworthiness requirements and compose into software process. The composite process satisfies both functional and non-functional requirements for the trustworthy software.

Over the two past decades, the software process modeling community is being confronted to the following dilemma: how a software process modeling Language (SPML) can be sufficiently abstract to hide the increasing complexity of development processes while being precise enough to be executed? Since no SPML succeeded in satisfying these apparent conflicting requirements, in this paper we propose to combine two languages: UML4SPM, an UML2.0-based software process modeling language and WS-BPEL (Web Services Business process Execution Language). While UML4SPM brings g expressiveness, understandability and abstraction in modeling software development processes, BPEL provides a semantically rich set of concepts for process executions. The mapping between the two languages, how do they complement each other, some issues and the value of the approach are discussed.

When software organizations adopt several best practices models into one single environment the number of activities and processes tends to increase. Managing effectively a large and complex system of processes requires process modeling capabilities at higher levels of abstraction. This paper presents a modeling approach for software process design and implementation to deal with the increasing size and complexity of large systems of processes. A model based on an extension of UML 2.0 Component Diagrams is used to develop a process architecture. A transition mechanism using Little-JIL process programming language is also proposed to support the refinement of a process architecture to a process implementation.

Currently most software process modeling approaches are predefined, not automatically adaptive to different software projects, and provide little support for development team formation with task and resources allocation in real environments. Based on our ten-year working experience for software organizations, we propose an agent-based multilateral negotiation model MNM-PA to support dynamic software process modelling and ease the work of team formation. MNM-PA brings the following advantages: (1) the software processes are not predefined;(2) the software processes are for given projects and with development teams, allocated tasks and task constrains. MNM-PA is an extension of the classic one-time biding contract net protocol. It defines the main components to model a complete negotiation process for software process construction, especially including the negotiation strategies. MNM-PA is implemented and experimented in a software process management tool namely SoftPM, which is used in more than 100 software organizations in China.

This paper introduces an executable system dynamics simulation model developed to help project managers comprehend the complex impacts related to requirements volatility on a software development project. The simulator extends previous research and adds research results from an empirical survey. including over 50 new parameters derived from the associated survey data, to a base model. The paper discusses detailed results from two cases that show significant cost, schedule, and quality impacts as a result of requirements volatility. The simulator can be used as an effective tool to demonstrate the complex set of factor relationships and effects related to requirements volatility. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
