Asynchronous circuit design shows many similarities with so are design. This is due to the modular construction style associated with asynchronous circuits, where each asynchronous module can be designed as a standalone object communicating with other modules. We propose a visualisation system for asynchronous circuit design tools, based on clustered graph visualisation and coordinated views. The novelty of our approach is to apply classical software visualisation techniques to a hardware environment and take advantage of properties specific to our asynchronous design flow. This system is based on a control and data flow graph representation of the asynchronous circuit compiled from a high-level description by a syntax-directed transparent process and transferable to the final hardware circuit by a direct synthesis process. Compared to software compilation flows, this transparent design flow offers opportunities for visualisation, with representations at different stages being easily mapped onto each other to combine their visualisation qualities. Each representation also exhibits properties based on some physical attributes of the final hardware circuit, allowing us to render some abstract properties on top of real-world-based ones. This paper shows how the handshake circuit graph is used as the underlying structure onto which properties extracted from other structures are mapped, and then how this structured graph is used as the central piece in a coordinated views environment. Dynamic graph abstraction for effective software visualisation

Graphs are used extensively in software visualisation to represent both static aspects of software structure and dynamic aspects of execution-time behaviour. However, for realistic subject software systems, there are far too many nodes and edges in the displayed graphs to be comprehensible to an end user. Further, for presentation of dynamics, continual change and redisplay of such large graphs is too demanding for conventional workstation computational resources. This paper poses the problem of ''reduction'' or ''abstraction'' in dynamically changing graphs representing software systems, and proposes a combination of techniques that can be used to reduce the visual complexity of a graph without obscuring the significant information that it was meant to convey. The abstract graph can be comprehended move readily and it changes far less frequently than the full graph. As well, when the abstract graph does change, it requires far less computation for layout and redisplay. These abstraction techniques are illustrated by way of examples showing their use in systems for visualisation of object-oriented and multi-layer software systems.

Synchronised visualisation of software process and product artefacts: Concept, design and prototype implementation

Context: Most prior software visualisation (SV) research has focused primarily on making aspects of intangible software product artefacts more evident. While undoubtedly useful, this focus has meant that software process visualisation has received far less attention. Objective: This paper presents Conceptual visualisation, a novel SV approach that builds on the well-known CodeCity metaphor by situating software code artefacts alongside their software development processes, in order to link and synchronise these typically separate components. Method: While the majority of prior SV research has focused on re-presenting what is already available in the code (i.e., the implementation) or information derived from it (i.e., various metrics), the presented approach instead makes the design concepts and original developers' intentions - both significant sources of information in terms of software development and maintenance - readily and contextually available in a visualisation environment that tightly integrates the code artefacts with their original functional requirements and development activity. Results: Our approach has been implemented in a prototype tool called ScrumCity with the proof of concept being demonstrated using six real-world open source systems. A preliminary case study has further been carried out with real world data. Conclusion: Conceptual visualisation, as implemented in ScrumCity, shows early promise in enabling developers and managers (and potentially other stakeholders) to traverse and explore multiple aspects of software product and process artefacts in a synchronised manner, achieving traceability between the two.

The size and complexity of software systems presents many challenges to developers. software visualisation techniques can help make more manageable tasks across the development cycle. In this paper we focus on the dynamic visualisation of software state---an important element in supporting activities such as debugging. We propose Pseudo-Breakpoints as a means of collecting data and making it available to specialised visualisation components. We describe the implementation of this concept in Eclipse and present some example visualisations.

software developers can use software visualisations employing the code-map metaphor to discover and correlate facts spread over a large code base. This work presents an extensive review of the use of the code-map metaphor for software visualisation. The review analyses a set of 29 publications, which together describe 21 software development tools that use visualisations employing the code-map metaphor. The review follows a task oriented framework to guide the analysis of the literature in terms of the task, audience, target, medium, representation, and evidence dimensions based on the code- map metaphor. Although the literature indicates that software visualisations based on the code-map metaphor are perceived by the research community to be helpful across all aspects of the software develop process, the main finding of our review is that there is a lack of quantitative evidence to support this perception. Thus, the effectiveness of visualisations incorporating the code-map metaphor is still unclear. The majority of the software visualisations analysed in this study, however, do provide qualitative observations regarding their usage in various scenarios. These are summarised and presented in this review as we believe the observations can be used as motivation for future empirical evaluations.

Most of the technologies used require large amounts of scripting, are not reliable on all platforms, are binary formats, or no longer maintained. We can make end-user web software visualisation of object-oriented programs cheap, portable, and easy by using Extensible (X3D) 3D Graphics, which is a new open standard. In this thesis we outline our experience with X3D and discuss the suitability of X3D as an output format for software visualisation

Real clock time animation support for developing software visualisations

Developers building software visualisations must use a graphics library and user interface toolkit as an underlying support platform. Often, these support environments are large, difficult to learn, low-level, and lacking primitives for capabilities such as animation. We have developed a graphics support environment called Polka-RC for building software visualisations. Polka-RC is a second generation system that leverages the continuous animation primitives of the mature system Polka, and adds the capability of specifying real clock time-based animation activations and durations. The new Polka-RC animation model also provides a flexible multiprocess program-to-visualisation mapping, In this article we describe the Polka-RC methodology, list advantages of the approach, and describe how the methodology influences the design of software visualisations and algorithm animations.

Softarch: Tool support for integrated software architecture development

A good software architecture design is crucial in successfully realising an object-oriented analysis (OOA) specification with an object-oriented design (OOD) model that meets the specification's functional and non-functional requirements. Most CASE tools and software architecture design notations do not adequately support software architecture modelling and analysis, integration with OOA and OOD methods and tools, and high-level, dynamic architectural visualisations of running systems. We describe SoftArch, an environment that provides flexible software architecture modelling using a concept of successive refinement and an extensible architecture meta-model. SoftArch provides extensible analysis tools enabling developers to analyse their architecture model properties. Run-time visualisation of systems uses dynamic annotation and animation of high-level architectural modelling views. SoftArch is integrated with a component-based CASE tool and run-time monitoring tool, and has facilities for 3rd party tool integration through a common exchange format. This paper discusses the motivation for SoftArch, its modelling, analysis and dynamic visualisation capabilities, and its integration with various analysis, design and implementation tools.

Visualising data science workflows to support third-party notebook comprehension: an empirical study

Data science is an exploratory and iterative process that often leads to complex and unstructured code. This code is usually poorly documented and, consequently, hard to understand by a third party. In this paper, we first collect empirical evidence for the non-linearity of data science code from real-world Jupyter notebooks, confirming the need for new approaches that aid in data science code interaction and comprehension. Second, we propose a visualisation method that elucidates implicit workflow information in data science code and assists data scientists in navigating the so-called garden of forking paths in non-linear code. The visualisation also provides information such as the rationale and the identification of the data science pipeline step based on cell annotations. We conducted a user experiment with data scientists to evaluate the proposed method, assessing the influence of (i) different workflow visualisations and (ii) cell annotations on code comprehension. Our results show that visualising the exploration helps the users obtain an overview of the notebook, significantly improving code comprehension. Furthermore, our qualitative analysis provides more insights into the difficulties faced during data science code comprehension.

A systematic literature review of software visualization evaluation

Contextsoftware visualizations can help developers to analyze multiple aspects of complex software systems, but their effectiveness is often uncertain due to the lack of evaluation guidelines. Objective: We identify common problems in the evaluation of software visualizations with the goal of formulating guidelines to improve future evaluations. Method: We review the complete literature body of 387 full papers published in the SOFTVIS/VISSOFT conferences, and study 181 of those from which we could extract evaluation strategies, data collection methods, and other aspects of the evaluation. Results:Of the proposed software visualization approaches, 62% lack a strong evaluation. We argue that an effective software visualization should not only boost time and correctness but also recollection, usability, engagement, and other emotions. Conclusion:We call on researchers proposing new software visualizations to provide evidence of their effectiveness by conducting thorough (i) case studies for approaches that must be studied in situ, and when variables can be controlled, (ii) experiments with randomly selected participants of the target audience and real-world open source software systems to promote reproducibility and replicability. We present guidelines to increase the evidence of the effectiveness of software visualization approaches, thus improving their adoption rate.
