software visualizations are usually realized as standalone and isolated tools that use embedded code viewers within the visualization. In the context of program comprehension, only few approaches integrate visualizations into code editors, such as integrated development environments. This is surprising since professional developers consider reading source code as one of the most important ways to understand software, therefore spend a lot of time with code editors. In this paper, we introduce the design and proof-of-concept implementation for a software visualization approach that can be embedded into code editors. Our contribution differs from related work in that we use dynamic analysis of a software system's runtime behavior. Additionally, we incorporate distributed tracing. This enables developers to understand how, for example, the currently handled source code behaves as a fully deployed, distributed software system. Our visualization approach enhances common remote pair programming tools and is collaboratively usable by employing shared code cities. As a result, user interactions are synchronized between code editor and visualization, as well as broadcasted to collaborators. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach that combines code editors with collaboratively usable code cities. Therefore, we conducted a user study to collect first-time feedback regarding the perceived usefulness and perceived usability of our approach. We additionally collected logging information to provide more data regarding time spent in code cities that are embedded in code editors. Seven teams with two students each participated in that study. The results show that the majority of participants find our approach useful and would employ it for their own use. We provide each participant's video recording, raw results, and all steps to reproduce our experiment as supplementary package. Furthermore, a live demo of our tool is available online.1 We invite other researchers

Motivating students to comprehend software structure, behavior and complexity is often difficult because software cannot be seen or even touched, disappear into files on disks. To overcome this problem, the author has prepared an open source project, some programs developed by students themselves and two software visualization tools, and applied them in programming teaching. They are suitable for classroom use in undergraduate programming courses. The effectiveness of software visualization in programming teaching has been evaluated formally by students. The implementation of software visualization in programming teaching was judged to be successful because of the positive student feedback. This paper describes the case and experiment, the overall effectiveness, and plans for further work.

software clustering techniques have been used to analyze the reality of software structure. The visualization of the detected clusters has also been studied. However, the features implemented by the detected clusters are not obvious and understanding them is a crucial part of the industrial use of software clustering. In this study, we examined the existing information retrieval method and found three major issues it has. We developed technical solutions for each of them: using hierarchical labeling, weighing the words likely representing the feature by considering an architectural convention, and modifying the idf score by the scale of the cluster. The effectiveness of our approach is validated through case studies using actual software products including a COBOL business application. Also, we faced two additional practical problems: effectiveness of the method words and plural and conjugated forms of the words. We found the method name words were less useful than the class name words, and lemmatization was successfully used to normalize the form of the words even in the case of program identifiers.

software visualization (SV) allows us to visualize different aspects and artifacts related to software, thus helping engineers understanding its underlying design and functionalities in a more efficient and faster way. In this paper, we conducted a tertiary systematic literature review to identify, classify, and evaluate the current state of the art on software visualization from 48 software visualization secondary studies, following three perspectives: publication trends, software visualization topics and techniques, and issues related to research field. Hence, we summarized the main findings among popular sub-fields of SV, identifying potential research directions and fifteen shared recommendations for developers, instructors and researchers. Our main findings are the lack of rigorous evaluation or theories support to assess SV tools effectiveness, the disconnection between tool design and their scope, and the dispersal of the research community.

software visualization is a growing field of research, in which developers are assisted in understanding and analyzing complex applications by mapping different aspects of a software system onto visual attributes. Under the assumption that virtual reality, due to the higher degree of immersion, may enhance user experience, researchers have begun to port existing visualization techniques to this environment. Oftentimes, layout algorithms and user interaction methods are more or less transferred one-to-one, though little is known about the effect of virtual reality in visual analytics and program comprehension. Moreover, little research on the behavior of developers in different three-dimensional visualization environments has been done yet. This paper extends the results of a previous controlled experiment, in which the EvoStreets visualization technique was compared in different two- and three-dimensional environments. In the original experiment, we could not find evidence that any of the environments, namely, 2D, 2.5D, and virtual reality, effects the time required to find an answer or the correctness of the given answer. However, we found indications that movement patterns differ between the 2.5D and the virtual reality environments. For this paper, we analyzed and refined the movement trajectories that have been recorded in the previous experiment. We found significant differences for some of the tasks that had to be solved by the participants. In particular, we found evidence that the path length, average speed, and occupied volume differ. Though we could find significant correlations between these metrics and correctness, we found indications that there is a correlation with time, which, in turn, differs significantly between the 2.5D and the VR environments for many tasks. These findings may have implications on the design of visualizations, interactions, and recommendation systems for these different environments.

The increasing number of cybersecurity threats we are facing nowadays is fueling the development of new detection and contrast techniques based on the analysis of Big Data. In such a setting, the MapReduce paradigm has quickly become the de facto standard for carrying out this processing. This has led to a surge in the number of job offerings involving this skill. Moreover, we are experiencing a significant increase in the number of computer science courses covering this paradigm as well as its most popular implementations, Spark and Hadoop. In this paper, it is presented a solution for supporting the teaching of MapReduce through the use of software visualization. The proposed solution has two main goals. The first is to help students in understanding how the MapReduce paradigm succeeds in solving a complex problem by decomposing it in simpler sub problems, where each of these is solved by means of map and/or reduce operations. The second is about the capability of showing how an input dataset is partitioned in blocks and processed in parallel by the different computing units of a distributed computing system. In both cases, the use of software visualization techniques with proper graphical metaphors helps the students in understanding what is going on, by providing them with a graphical representation that, on a side, describes how the considered algorithm works on an input dataset while, on the other side, illustrates the speed-up achieved thanks to the distributed approach.

In spite of the available resources provided by modern IDEs, program understanding remains as a very difficult and important task in software engineering. This paper presents a software visualization environment named SourceMiner. Implemented as an Eclipse plug-in to enhance software comprehension activities, SourceMiner is an extensible, interactive and coordinated multi-perspective environment. It is multi-perspective because it provides sets of views that allow programmers to look at the software from different points of view. It is coordinated because views are linked to each other, and consistently respond to the actions executed by the programmers on the environment. It is interactive in the sense that programmers can dynamically configure visual scenarios to better support the building of mental models. It is extensible because its architecture was designed to facilitate the inclusion of new views to the environment. This paper describes the principles behind the design of SourceMiner, and discusses how it has been used to support software comprehension activities such as the identification of code smells and the characterization of object-oriented software systems.

Using software visualization to accomplish certain tasks such as design defect de- tection can prove tedious. Users first need to find and configure a visualization tool that is adequate for representing the data they want to examine. Then all too often, they are forced to manually navigate the software system in order to complete their task. What we propose is a simpler and more efficient approach that moves the emphasis from con- figuring a tool and manually navigating the system to writing a definition of the work we want to accomplish. Our goal-driven assistant then generates the best visualization tool and guide us through the navigation of the task. Our approach consists of three main components. The first component is a domain- specific language (DSL) to describe analysis tasks. The second component is a language to define the visualizations as customized implementations of the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. The last component is a generation process used to go from the analysis task to the visualization. By removing the need to configure a visualization tool and guiding the navigation of the system, we believe we made a tool that is simpler and faster to use than its conven- tional counterparts.

software visualization can play a significant role in our fight against software's inherent complexity. Despite all efforts made so far, software visualization tools have not succeeded to be a part of software Engineer's everyday practice. We believe that a properly defined taxonomy that will provide a framework for discussion, analysis and research guidance by offering a systematic and systemic overview of the area, covering all the concerns and challenges, is a starting point for a new approach for the field. After analyzing existing taxonomies and exploring existing tools, we approach software visualization as an interface between humans and software and we propose a multi-layered framework that incorporates all the concerns and the challenges of our field, in a neat, systematic and expandable way that can also serve as a roadmap for a research area and that can promote communication of existing and new ideas.
