An End-to-End Implementation of a Service-Oriented architecture for Data-Driven Smart Buildings

Buildings connect with multiple information systems like Building Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), IoT devices, Building Information Models (BIM), the electricity grid, weather services, etc. Data-driven smart building software demands seamless integration of the above systems and their data. The lack of a system architecture with well-defined Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) poses a significant challenge for developing reusable, modular and scalable applications. This article presents a service-oriented system architecture designed with data-driven smart buildings in mind. The architecture relies on the Zachman framework and consists of seven service categories: 1) existing business applications, 2) new microservice-based applications, 3) databases, 4) integration software, 5) infrastructure services, 6) shared services, and 7) user interfaces. It closely resembles the MACH architectural principles: Microservices, API-first, Cloud-based components, and Headless principles. This architecture is implemented as a proof-of-concept, including three smart building applications. These include a Digital Twin application integrating sensor data with a BIM model, a web application merging real-time sensor data with semantic building graphs, and a data exploration tool using sensor data, the Brick ontology, and Grafana dashboards. Future implementations include real-time control applications such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). The proposed architecture and its implementations provide a blueprint for a reusable, modular, and scalable architecture in the smart building domain.

Most engineers and solution Architects are familiar in general with Availability as a Quality Attribute. Availability on its own can mean different system quality to different stakeholders and could have a different meaning in different stages of a product. In this paper we are going through different definitions of availability, how it links to the basic concepts in probability theory and will illustrate with examples how they can be calculated. Finally we will explain which steps should be followed to model availability with fault tree analysis.

Agriculture is an important sector with the majority of the rural population in developing countries depending on it. The agricultural sector is confronted with the major challenge of increasing agriculture production to feed a growing and increasingly prosperous population in a situation of decreasing availability of natural resources. Factors of particular concern are water shortages, declining soil fertility, effects of climate change and rapid decrease of fertile agricultural lands due to urbanisation. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) in agriculture have the potential to increase the efficiency, productivity and sustainability agriculture by providing information and knowledge sharing. In this paper, we seek to illustrate the contribution of ICT to food security and sustainability agriculture in developing countries. We argue that developing solution architecture (e-agriculture framework) to expose farmers to the much needed agricultural information (i.e., pre-harvest and post harvest information, pricing, weather conditions etc) can boost agricultural productivity. We show that such a framework must accommodate the dynamic trends in ICT tools, applications, adoption and usage. Further, we illustrate the development of such a framework to address these aforementioned properties to improve agricultural productivity.

Financial analysis of solution architectures is essential to determine their profitability and justify their implementation. These financial analyses are supported on variables such as costs and benefits which should be standardized, clear and consistent to understand the objectives of the financial analysis, the relationship between the variables and the components of the solution architecture, and the financial indicators obtained once the financial analysis is performed. To do that, the financial analysis of solution architecture should be supported in a conceptual model that contains the concepts, relationships and explanations that support a financial analysis. However, the current models are focused on the structure of solution architectures and they are limited with respect to their financial concepts. As a result, the understanding and identification of those concepts are usually done informally, turning this process into a complicated and an error-prone task. The article presents a theoretical conceptual model, called FINFLEX-CM, that formalizes the concepts and supports the financial analysis of solution architectures, increasing understanding and promoting the standardization.

The transition to agile software development changes the decision-making power in organizations. This study aims to provide researchers and practitioners with empirical insights into how the participation in decision-making by enterprise, solution and system architects evolves due to this transition. For this purpose, a case study was conducted to examine the participation of and challenges for architects in decision-making in agile projects. A mixed-method research approach was used comprising observations, conversations, interviews, literature study and a survey. We found that 101 decision types are used prior to and in agile iterations, in which architects and stakeholders collaborate to make these decisions. The projection of these types of decisions over 25 different actors in the case study organization demonstrates that decision-making is a group effort in which solution and system architects are highly involved. architecture and agility can indeed co-exist. Another finding of this case study is that stakeholders in agile teams perceive less architecture involvement in decision-making and expect less design decisions up front. Architects are challenged to become team players, to make design decisions only when they are necessary, and finally, to document, communicate, and share design decisions more effectively.

This paper provides an innovative way of improving the quality of the lives of those living with Alzheimer's by designing and implementing a cost-effective Alzheimer's Artificial Intelligence Technologies (AAIT) system. Specifically, this paper describes the solution architecture as well as the design, deployment, and realization of an artificial intelligence enabled system with Internet of Things services, alert services, big data collection, scenarios, and patient data analysis tools. In order to create a faster prototype system for AAIT, a sandbox based approach is presented to leverage workflow automation and Internet services connection platforms. Finally, the conclusions and future directions of AAIT are presented.

Nowadays, information security is a main organizational concern that aims to control and protect business assets from existing threats. However, the lack of mechanisms to direct and control the increasing incorporation of Information Technology (IT) assets to support new security solution architectures creates additional security threats. We created a method to identify the hidden implications that exist after implementing IT assets of different solution architectures. This method comprises two artifacts. The first artifact is a metamodel that characterizes three domains: IT governance, enterprise architecture, and dependencies between IT assets of solution architectures. The second artifact is a model to specify value dependencies, which identify the business impact related to interoperability relations between the aforementioned assets. The application of this method in a Latin American central bank led to rationalize IT assets and to obtain a suitable security solution architecture from two existing architectures.

A new efficient coupling relationship description method has been developed to provide an automated and visualized way to multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) modeling and solving. The disciplinary relation matrix (DRM) is proposed to describe the coupling relationship according to disciplinary input/output variables, and the MDO definition has been reformulated to adopt the new interfaces. Based on these, a universal MDO solving procedure is proposed to establish an automated and efficient way for MDO modeling and solving. Through a simple and convenient initial configuration, MDO problems can be solved using any of available MDO architectures with no further effort. Several examples are used to verify the proposed MDO modeling and solving process. Result shows that the DRM method has the ability to simplify and automate the MDO procedure, and the related MDO framework can evaluate the MDO problem automatically and efficiently.

Constructing enterprise-level solution requires integration of existing, modified, and new modular technologies. A customer specific solution is instantiated from a reference implementation owned by the services organization, as a result of multiple products and their reference design created by the R&D organization. Yet, the disciplines of R&D and enterprise architecture differ in their analysis and design processes, artifacts, and semantics, leading to a mismatch in product design, knowledge and requirements interpretation. The Complex-systems Unified Reference architecture (CURA) was developed as a common platform for both field and R&D practices. This methodology binds a 4-layered structure and a 4-phased architecture process, controlling the solution architecture lifecycle from reference design to reference implementation and solution instantiation, and fits both agile and DevOps methodologies. The presented version of CURA was tested and implemented with several customers as a lean and minimal blueprinting approach, serving as part of the architectural deliverables. CURA can be adjusted to other visual binding notations such as UML and TOGAF modeling languages, and can scale up to system-of-systems design.
